A Great Start to the Series

As usual, the latest Charlie Parker mystery arrived in excellent time and in excellent condition. I was hesitant to read a novel that circled back to begin the entire series—most of which are among the best detective novels I have ever read. The title was also off-putting, as I never judge people by where they live, not to mention having spent two years teaching in Mississippi. But all misgivings were swept away as I became engrossed in what can only be acknowledged as an excellent introduction to Charlie Parker after the first shock of his family’s horrific murders has somewhat receded. He is still a tortured soul, full of rage and a pure determination to bring murderers to justice, however that justice may be defined.

The novel provided hints as to some historical questions I had regarding Arkansas & its distinction as the home of an infamous US President. Connolly always manages to paint pictures of the darkest kind, but they are balanced by the essential goodness of his main characters, although they are human and therefore flawed, just like every human on earth.

In summary, I loved the novel & want to thank John Connolly for “circling back” to introduce us to this Charlie Parker at this particular point in his evolution.

Grabs and holds

Everything except more maligning of the South. We're not all racist, stupid or ignorant. Most of us can read.

Timely delivery, book in excellent condition

The book is in "like new" condition. Absolutely no complaints on that score. And it arrived in a timely fashion.

As for the book itself, this is not really the forum for critique. But if you haven't read John Connolly's Charlie Parker series, don't be put off by the "horror novel" classification. Connolly is simply an excellent writer, far better than most.

The Dirty South is another great read in the Charlie Parker series. It's hard to put down the book down once you start reading. I highly recommend this book.
