Description

From Kirkus Reviews Lansing offers a debut novel about an ex-New York Police Department narcotics chief drawn out of retirement when drug-gang violence gets personal.xa0Jack Bertolino left his hometown of New York City for Los Angeles after back pain sidelined him from the force. Since then, he's been gardening and nurturing his penchant for red wine. Things change, however, when Mia, a gorgeous Colombian informant whom Jack knew intimately, turns up murdered. The Los Angeles police initially suspect Jack but quickly clear him - and then rebuff him when he offers to help. He investigates the murder on his own, using his experience, instincts and invaluable connections from his cartel-busting days to unearth new evidence that makes the LAPD crawl back to him.xa0xa0Lansing, crafts a compelling hero in Jack, who has a son at Stanford, an ex-wife back East, and classic tastes--including a fondness for Benziger wine, Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue" album and his sterling gray Mustang GT. He has the appeal of a Hollywood leading man in the vein of Harrison Ford, particularly when romantic sparks fly with Deputy District Attorney Leslie Sager. The cinematic plot unspools at a smooth pace, cleanly shifting from one scene to the next and allowing readers to put the pieces together themselves. When action erupts, Lansing doesn't hold back, and the explosive finale reads like something that blockbuster director Michael Bay might dream up."A pulse-pounding thriller with a charming protagonist." - Kirkus Reviews "Fast, furious and stone exciting... a wild ride, brilliantly executed."-- Robert Ward, Author of Red Baker John Lansing is the author of four thrillers featuring Jack Bertolino —The Devil’s Necktie , Blond Cargo , Dead Is Dead , and The Fourth Gunman —as well as the true-crime non-fiction book Good Cop Bad Money , written with former NYPD Inspector Glen Morisano. He has been a writer and producer on Walker, Texas Ranger, and the co-executive producer of the ABC series Scoundrels . A native of Long Island, John now resides in Los Angeles. Surely Caused My Addiction to Fiction

This is a book of firsts for me. It's the first book that I've bought and read on my iPad Kindle app. Also, I rarely read fiction books. I primarily read non-fiction. Somewhere in my early years I must have picked up the belief that reading was solely for learning. Oops, so wrong. I actually had a discussion with a friend of mine. He said that fiction was a great escape from the stresses of everyday life, and he suggested that I read, "The Devil's Necktie." And that's where my addiction to fiction began.

I loved reading, "The "Devil's Necktie." It's a refreshing escape, an energizing brain break. The book provides a wonderful mix of elements in one package -- sex, humor, mystery, cops, crime, cars, drugs, gangs -- you name it. So sly, Lansing had me hooked and cleverly reeled me in successively at every page. The dialogue was snappy and flowed well. In particular, I enjoyed and grinned at the funny parts -- little dry, witty zingers.

As a writer, John Lansing knows how to paint images with words in a unique and very refreshing way. The book is a highly entertaining read. It just yanked me in. I was fascinated with the main character, Jack Bertolino. No doubt, "The Devil's Necktie," is the cause of my new addition to fiction.

Page turner

The book is addictive, from page one it grabbed me and I could not put it down. The author has the wonderful ability to weave a story along with such descriptive details that you feel you are actually watching a movie. I predict that this will be made into a movie someday, it so screams for the big screen. I maybe a bit prejudice since the author is my husband's cousin but setting that aside I would not give a good review if I felt it was not warranted. Bravo Jackie!

All gore and sex.

Too crude and vulgar for me.

A must read!

Characters matter. A believable storyline matters. True-crime dramas are a guilty pleasure for me and "The Devil's Necktie" is as compelling as any crime saga you'll see on television. The more obstacles Jack faced, the more you wanted to cheer for him. Totally enjoyable.

New Author , Great Book

John Lansing's The Devil's Necktie is fast, furious and stone exciting. His protagonist Jack Bertolino is a classic hero who gets into trouble with beautiful women, gangs, and other cops. All of this sounds new and original because Lansing knows every nook and cranny of LA from the valley, to Mullholland, down to the gang hoods. He also is an expert on police methodology so you feel that you're reading the real dope. It's a wild ride, brilliantly executed and I read it in one sitting. Can't wait for installment two! Read this book but hang on. A wild and violent trip.

Excellent read!

Excellent! A little "graphic", but hey, it's LA gangs, Colombian drug lords, and an ex NYC cop! Very gritty and real!! Lansing deftly avoids the easy stereotypes in every element of the story. Jack Bertolino is a character I want to follow beyond this first novel! Can't wait for the movie!

Great Read!

Once again John Lansing has done it! I picked up The Devil's Necktie over the weekend and could not put it down. I loved it, as I followed Jack's quest to find Mia's killer. John Lansing draws you into the politicking involved in the world of cops as well as into the underbelly of society, capturing the shades of gray that make up each of his characters. For me, as a Los Angelino, I also loved recognizing some of the neighborhoods and cities that frame the background of this story. His authentic and vivid style of writing makes this a real page-turner. It's a great read.

Meh

Liked it a bit, but it never really went anywhere until near the climax at which point it got a bit absurd. Nothing terribly original or exciting about it.

Words for word's sake?

Too wordy. Should have been able to get to the point without too much verbiage. Plot and characterisation is great in some instances, pathetic in other. A great crime idea diffused by the need to show too much of the 'I know what goes on' attitude. I sort of enjoyed the book but I won't by another by this author

A thrilling ride!

I don't often read books written by men. I don't read thrillers very often either. But when I had the chance to review The Devil's Necktie, I jumped on it. The blurb alone was enough to make me want to read it.

Jack is the MC and I immediately liked him. A hard nosed retired NY cop. He's gruff and all busines. When an ex-informant reaches out to him for help, he is a little apprehensive. And with good reason. Minutes after leaving her, she's murdered. And guess who's suspect # 1? We follow Jack as he tries to find Mia's murderer and clear his name. Old enemies will surface and old threats too. There's a lot going on in this book. A little romance, a hint of steam and lots of action.

I would recommend to anyone who likes to read thrillers, or those who love lots of action!

I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion!
