Description

Over a period of nearly two millennia, the Christian Church has oppressed and brutalized millions of individuals. Meticulously researched and courageously written, "The Dark Side of Christian History" by Helen Ellerbe examines the Church's devastating impact upon human freedom, dignity and spirituality. Written for the lay reader, this controversial book is especially relevant today as the religious right is attempting to assert greater influence in American politics and society. "The Dark Side of Christian History presents a compelling argument that the Church's desire to control and contain spiritually motivated its persecution of heretics, its burning of libraries, the Crusades, the Inquisition, and the witch-hunts. This dark Christianity ahs left a legacy, a world view, which permeates every aspect of Western society. It is a legacy which fosters sexism, racism, the intolerance of difference and the desecration of the natural environment. Helen Ellerbe is a researcher, writer, and public speaker living in the San Francisco bay area. -- Midwest Book Review --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

God approves of evil

I have a very simple question for Christians (I was once one): Why would a loving and fair god allow such atrocities as documented truthfully in this book to be committed in his name? The unanswerable question of theodicy is all the reason anyone needs to disbelieve in a loving god. For example, as an ex-christian, I'm ashamed of the way christians one treated women and Jews. We were theocratic terrorists long before Islam and 9/11. God was just fine with it - in fact, he encourages it in the bible!

Quite a read.

Excellent and deep historical analysis.

history not philosophy

The reader can only hope Ellerbe has her history right, since her anthropology and science are hopelessly wrong-headed. She buys into the goddess nonsense of feminism and New Age mystic interpretations of quantum mechanics.
