Description

"Seven years after her rescue...from the outlaw who held her captive for well over a year, Etta [Capstone] still cannot stand a man's touch... She wishes she could accept affection from her rescuer, Harmon Drake, who is willing to continue waiting for her to thaw... Harmon's...campaign to win Etta isn't written as genre readers might expect, but it's effective...and calls to mind the subtle hand of Lorraine Heath's western historicals." Publisher's Weekly ABNA review, 4/18/13"stand-alone Western in classic style...believable characters...a satisfying resolution..." Akron Beacon Journal, 4/12/13A quarter-finalist for Amazon's 2013 Breakthrough Novel of the Year Award Karen J. Hasley grew up in America's heartland. Research into 17th-century female poets showed her the rich treasures in women's lives of the past, and in 2006 Karen's first novel, "Lily's Sister," hit the stands. The rest is -quite literally - history. xa0xa0xa0xa0 Do you recognize these American women? Jane Addams.Ida B. Wells-Barnett. Dr. Alice Hamilton. Dr. Kate W. Barrett. Donaldina Cameron. Gertrude Stein. Mary Cassatt. You'll find them all - and then some -in Karen's books, which intertwine the lives of fictional heroines and historical real-life women so closely and convincingly that you may need to check a history book to figure out which is which. xa0xa0xa0xa0 Hasley's 6-book Laramie Series spans the years between1880 and 1919 with satisfying stories from America's past, each with a competent, courageous woman at its center. Features & Highlights

  • The Dangerous Thaw of Etta Capstone was a quarter-finalist for Amazon's 2013 Breakthrough Novel of the Year Award.“Revenge is very good eaten cold”For most people food serves a purpose and the purpose isn’t complicated. You eat it. But for Etta Capstone it’s not that simple. An excellent cook and the owner of a successful restaurant on the Texas frontier, she’s had years to perfect other uses for food besides the obvious. Food as shield. As wall. As love letter. As peace offering. Food as life—well, half a life, anyway. Etta’s not like other women. She’s been frozen in the past, frozen heart and soul for a long time, captive to memories of unbearable violence. Until suddenly, with the sighting of the man she holds responsible for her painful history, Etta begins to consider the possibility of a more satisfying future. She knows that with a good cooking fire and the steady heat of a patient man’s love, a lot of things are possible—even change, even happiness—and to her way of thinking, all that stands in the way of a bright future is one wicked man, one necessary execution, and lessons in good penmanship. So as a woman used to creating dishes from diverse and rare ingredients, Etta concocts a deadly recipe using just those elements. She knows better than most that life offers few guarantees, and if all it takes to free her from the past is one wicked man, one necessary execution, and lessons in good penmanship, she’ll take the risk and make the effort, no matter who gets burned. Because after years of keeping the fires of love and the warmth of hope at a distance, Etta Capstone is finally ready to thaw. From the Publisher's Weekly ABNA review:"...Etta isn’t written as genre readers might expect, but it’s effective nonetheless and calls to mind the subtle hand of Lorraine Heath’s western historicals."

A good read!

This was a story that grew on me as I read. In the beginning I wasn't quite sure if I should sympathize with Etta's dilemma and feelings or not. True she had suffered great trauma as a younger woman that left her cold and bruised in her soul. But then she was presented with an opportunity for revenge, deadly in nature. Should she give in to it?

I have to admit that I was a bit horrified when Etta decided to purge her own pain by having the one who caused it murdered! Somehow she doesn't realize that she is involving a man who had nothing to do with it in the first place on one hand and risking the man she loved on the other.

As the story unfolds, Etta gradually comes to realize that revenge is not always as sweet as one might think. But by then she had unleashed forces that could not be returned to the Pandora's box she had opened.

A good read, and as it turns out, something of a nail biter!

The Dangerous Thaw of Etta Capstone

Once again, Karen Hasley's newest book, The Dangerous Thaw of Etta Capstone, carefully and skillfully weaves historical women's fiction into an interesting and very likeable main character, Etta Capstone. Her saga, too often typical of women of her day, makes the reader sympathetic for her cause. She is so sincere and so determined to do what is right that I couldn't put the book down. I had to know if she resolves her crisis satisfactorily.
Of course, Karen uses many superb author's techniques to keep the reader involved right up to the end of the story. My interest was maintained and I was satisfied at the end, just like Etta.
Keep writing, Karen. I always enjoy reading what you write!

Loved this book

I could not put this book down. I loved the way Karen Hasley incorporated real history into this book. You get a clear picture of life in the 1870's in southeast Texas. This story mimics real life. Bad things happen, even to good people. I grew to love the characters in this book. Even Clyde Renfro had endearing qualities. The characters stayed with me long after I finished this book.
I don't want to give away the ending of this book, but the whole time, in the back of my mine, I didn't think Etta would go through with her plans. Boy was I wrong! Karen Hasley is a wonderful story teller. Well worth the read.

Its is a good western book with a little romance thrown in.

This was a well writing book. It keep my interest to the end. It was set in the 1800's. The characters where believable. I would have given it 5 stars, but thought the writer should have been a little more descriptive and used different times when she was having Etta looking back at the things that happen to her and Sissy. It would have made it more believable why she and Sissy turned out the way they did. I liked the fact that there were not sex scenes or dirty language. A well written book does not need them cause a good writer can let you know what went on without a lot cuss words or sex scenes. I was given this book for an honest review. Its a good western book with a little romance thrown in.

Probably the best book I've read all year!

This was a beautifully written story that had me laughing and crying throughout. The characters are written so well, I feel sorry they weren't actual historical figures. I especially like how Etta, unable to show her love in physical ways, demonstrates it through her cooking and interactions with the customers of her restaurant. And Harmon? Oh man, what a man! The relationship between Etta and Harmon sizzles underneath the entire story - leaving the reader hoping all will turn out well for this meant-to-be couple.

Thank you Ms. Hasley, for your delightful use of the English language and your acute sense of imagination. I will devour everything you write. Also, thank you for the recipes. As the Etta's dialogue unfolded, I found my mouth watering when she rattled off the daily specials.
