The Complete Sherlock Holmes (The Heirloom Collection)

This is not a review of the contents of this set or the works of Doyle. It is simply a review of this box set. It is cool looking and the way the box folds up and opens is "neat" but after the first moment of oohing and ahhing my husband (who was the recipient of this gift) commented that the binding looked a little bit cheap. I inspected it closer and these books do not appear to be very durable. There are nicer sets out there. I got a discount on the item through a coupon code so at the price I paid I feel it was reasonable, but there is no way this set is worth the $96 it is currently priced at.

This is a beautiful set. I was greatly looking forward to it. Unfortunately, though the package it arrived in was not damaged, the books themselves were poorly made where the spine attachment was falling apart on all four volumes when it arrived. I sent it back and reordered it, but yet again it arrived very damaged even though the box it was mailed in was immaculate. I did not order it a third time. Bummer.

Pages 392-408 of volume one are missing and replaced with 169-184, meaning it is no longer a "complete Sherlock Holmes." Admittedly, I am completely OCD, but that's why I bought the four volume complete version. I am annoyed at this printing error. But I am furious that there is no way to contact Amazon or the publisher (which is an Amazon company) to find out if I have a fluke and it is worth exchanging or if they are ALL misprinted. I sunk 392 pages worth of my time into this before finding that almost all of "The Blue Carbuncle" is missing.

I love Sherlock Holmes, and I wanted to have the best product around so I could always have it in my bookcase. I expected this from this product, especially because the price surely seemed to indicate it.
However, the box that holds the books had broken down in such a way, that if you try to hold it up, the books fall.the box they came in. I believe this happened because the box it came in didn't provide enough support. The weight of the books inevitable broke it down. This is Amazon's fault for putting it in a box too big for the case.
One of the books bindings (thankfully not all of them) has begun to break, so the cover of the book is falling off already and I haven't even begun reading it.
Lots of care must be put in the books if you don't want them breaking. DON'T but this product for kids.
I am extremely disappointed in this regard. I spent a lot of money for what seemed to be an excellent product but turned out to be a very bad one.
I cannot replace it, however, because I live in South America and the process would be horrifyingly long and dull. Then again, I would probably get the same result.

The book itself, as in, the stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are beautiful. I've always loved them. I would recommend it, although from a different publisher, to anyone who wants an enjoyable, light read and/or detective stories in general.

This is a really beautiful boxed set. Unfortunately, the quality of the materials is too low for the amount of money I paid for it. I ordered this as a gift. When it arrived, the box it was shipped in was fine but the box around the books had an edge split. I exchanged it for another one. That arrived today and it's in worse condition than the first one!

I do have this in ebook format and so far I'm loving it. But the physical book leaves a lot to be desired in material quality. I say don't waste your money. Plus, this is pretty big and sort of heavy. Not worth it.

Stunning and superb box set. Nothing shoddy about this. Gorgeous layout, and amusing artwork. Very heavy,well constructed volumes in a Sherlock motif box with magnetic lid. Does justice to the canon. I have been collecting books for decades and know quality in books when I see it. The volumes come with a colored ribbon which matches the book cover and page edge colors. Each volume differs. Sherlock's image is a raised relief on the covers. Damn nice box set any true book lover will appreciate. Can't wait to re-read the entire Doyle collection again (and I will read these story's in style now!).The Doyle estate symbol of approval is on the box. This somehow makes it even more enjoyable. My set cost about 60 dollars from Amazon. Thomas and Mercer Press, Las Vegas, Nevada.
As a side note: Beware of some of these bad reviews, I think some of these are for different editions. A customer photo of his/her product posted here is for a two volume set from another publishing house, and others describe a slip case set, not a multi-volume boxed set.

I am a big Sherlock fan and was very excited when I found this set. I got it a little over a year ago and just got around to reading them a couple weeks ago. The stories are wonderful, and I would highly recommend them for anyone, but the book binging's are bad. Whenever I first opened the books two of them had tears in the page binding, one of them had all its pages bent, and the coloring on the outside has already began to wear off.

Aside from the binding problems, the books are very nice and the stories are the best.

Wow, I got this on a lightning deal for $20 bucks. I read a lot of books and usually don't care about condition or appearance of the book itself. I've always wanted to read the Holmes books and for that price I was sold. The package arrived damaged (thanks UPS!) but the books themselves, though not protected by anything, were untouched in this neat case. The slipcase works perfectly, the magnetic snaps hold the flaps closed when it sits on the shelve. Each of the books is different and features a different silhouette of Holmes against a different angle of the Thames River. To my surprise the silhouette and pipe smoke is raised, adding a nice tactile feel to the cover. Each book has a color theme with matching cover, page finish, and bookmark. The magnifying glass window makes for a cool effect when one of the books is taken out, it feels like a three-dimensional art piece on my shelf, and it's thousands of pages of great reading material! I don't think I would buy it for more than $50, but Amazon's "usual" asking price of $60 isn't bad, especially if you're willing to overpay a little for a special Holmes fan.

A few nitpicks-- While great attention to detail was put into the box set, the first volume's title page reads "The Collected Sherlock Holmes", the other three had the correct "The Complete Sherlock Holmes". It doesn't effect my rating, but a person who reads this set is sure to notice that. The set was also printed in China. There's nothing wrong with Chinese printers but there's plenty of American ones too. Again, neither of these points effected my rating.

This is a very well-done presentation of Sherlock Holmes, with very nice volumes(4) and excellent packaging with an ingenious slipcase which closes magnetically. The only reason I have any criticism is the illustrations, but it's not that they aren't numerous and essentially well-done. I am a long-standing Sherlock Holmes fan and the illustrations are a bit too 'modern' for my taste and not as traditional in the line of Sidney Paget's. But that is a personal taste.

I have wanted to read the Sherlock series for a long time and here I find the entire collection. I won't write about the content, there is enough reviews that comment on that but I am here to say that you won't regret purchasing this product for even a second. It has quality that is noticed from afar. And I wouldn't have been able to buy it if Amazon had not sold this at such a low price and I'm thankful to have them around. Buy this now and get into the world of Sherlock Holmes.
