This is NOT a 'road tour' guide

While the description of sites is concise and useful and many less known sites are included, this is NOT a 'road tour' guide. Each chapter lists a number of sites that can be visited but there is no indication of times or distances between sites, or amount of time needed for each site or any information needed to plan an actual road trip. In addition, the major sites are listed before the less known ones rather than in order of visitation so you'd need to work thru the list twice. No indication of how long the trip would be with or without those 'secondary' sites.

I purchased this for kindle. Little care was taken to make the Kindle edition. The chapters themselves aren't included in the table of contents. Even worse, there are no hyperlinks for the index. (A semi-apology there tells the reader to use the Kindle's search function). Even worse, the 'Cross-Index' of battles shows only the chapter number (which aren't shown in the table of contents) so again the user has to do a lot of work to set up notes and bookmarks that should already be present.

Great resouce.

AS mentioned in the product description, this is a fairly critical resource for Civil War buffs seeking to get the biggest bang for their time and dollars, touring battle sites. But here are TWO key caveats: (1) I'm writing this in mid-2017--be sure you get the current edition; (2) use this in conjunction with at least one complimentary resource--such as, for example the book, sold here, at https://www.amazon.com/dp/0395740126/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_9 .

Useless

This book must have been written from an easy chair. It is neither a guide nor is it complete. There are no details about how to plan a trip of the battlefields, not information about the time to spend at the sites, nor the sequence to see the battle ground or the important places within the sites. It says to view the informative signs on the grounds.

I even enjoyed some of it and my husband is the Civil War buff.

My husband like Civil War movies, etc so I bought him this for his birthday. One of the best gifts he has received. It was doubly nice because we took a trip to Mississippi 2 months later and info from in here was great. I even enjoyed reading some of it.

Great Reference Book

This was a great book to have this year on our cross country road trip. We stopped at battlefields and sites from New Mexico to Georgia. A great resource - better than just using the internet.

This book was very helpful in finding battlefields when I was on a trip to Virginia. I used it together with The Civil War Battlefield Guide, Second edition by Frances Kennedy.

A great resource

Just completed a 3 week travel to many NHP battlefields that are described in Michael Weeks' guide book, used it every day and found it indispensable to our plans. We used this in conjunction with other civil war history and map books. I would give it a 5 star if it had more maps. Well worth the purchase !
