Vile aftertaste

Repulsive and gratuitous sex scenes, especially for a readership of this caliber. They’re not just cheap, they’re gross, like the very explicit child abuse scene. (Lolita, by comparison, is tame.) Though only interspersed through otherwise well-conceived plots, they cast a dirty, unsettling shadow on the rest of the story, rendering it (to me) unreadable by the end of part one. Shame on you, Robert Littel!

Historic fiction of the CIA/KGB and the Cold War

Every now and then, I read a book that when finished, I'm sorry it has ended. This is one of those books, even at 900 pages. I am an avid reader, and typically do not subscribe to the 5-star hype of this forum. But this book deserves the full 5 stars. I'm already looking for what I might read from this same author in the future.
