For Scholarly Research

I just thought I would say that the average reader who might buy this to read tales to their children should not choose it. The book is intended for scholars or for those who are interested in the origins of fairy tales. There are no images. It's excellent for research and study.

Mediocre entertainment value

It is very convenient to have all these great fairy tales in one volume but the value in rereading them is little in my opinion.

The essays in the criticism section feel a little repetitive when they talk about the origins of fairy tales as spoken folk tales but that is bound to happen. Reading them I thought, okay this is the 5th critical essay on folk tales... yes, I know the oral origins of folktales but I have to read it again just worded differently.

I'm sure that those essays have great value if you are in school and this is required reading but for somebody who wants to read this for fun simplicity of the fairy tales makes them have a low entertainment value, especially for rereading them. It is a nice book to have in your personal library though, where else are you gonna find this selection and each tale comes with an introduction to the type of folktale that the fairytales fall under (for example: Cinderella stories have an intro, Bluebeard stories have another intro... and so forth).

So I guess 3/5 stars is fair for a review.

Must-have

Love the collection of fairy tales in this book, and how it groups together folk/fairy tales with the same essence but several of its variations. The essays in the back are very enlightening and enjoyable to read. This text was required for a class, but I might buy one to gift to a friend. Excellent!

it is very much a collector.

The collection of tales is extensive and original. I am quite pleased with the Book and know I will enjoy many pleasant hours of quality time in worlds far away and times gone by. These are stories that have been handed down from decades ago and have been mainstays in the world of Fictional Tales that have kept so many readers coming back year after year.

Came on time, good for folklore narrative classes

It’s the textbook I needed for my fairytales and folklore narrative class, but honestly just happens to be the assigned material. It’s a fun read on it own, but if you need it for a specific class it’s good and it came on time.
