Description

H.P. Lovecraft is a giant of horror literature and popular culture. Since the 1920s his short stories and novels has spellbound generations and influenced countless games, comics, novels, records and films. His short story The Call of Cthulhu, written in 1926 and first published in Weird Tales in 1928, is an absolute classic.François Baranger, born in 1970, is a multi-faceted artist and illustrator. He works primarily as a concept illustrator for films (Harry Potter, The Clash of the Titans, Beauty and the Beast) and computer games (Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls). He has also illustrated a number of book covers. In 2013, he wrote his first science fiction novel, Dominium Mundi, and in 2017, he wrote the thriller The Domino Effect. It was during his early years that he discovered Lovecraft, mainly thanks to role-playing games. Ever since, he has had a passionate interest in fantasy worlds in general, and for those created by a certain writer from Providence in particular. After dreaming for years about seeing an illustrated version of Lovecraft's works, Baranger finally decided to create one himself, and chose the most classic short story of them all, The Call of Cthulhu.

Features & Highlights

  • Boston, 1926. Francis Thurston goes through documents left behind by his grandfather’s brother, recently deceased under mysterious circumstances. He soon discovers the existence of a cult that worships ancient and unspeakable horrors. Mysterious murders, blood rituals in the depths of the Louisiana swamps, artists who descend into insanity after nightmarish visions, and a Cyclopean city that rises from the sea. Step by step, Thurston realizes that his relative’s research got too close to the truth. In the shadows, there are those who want to wake the sleeping god Cthulhu in order to spread madness and destruction over the entire world. The stars are right. Is the end near? H.P. Lovecraft’s
  • The Call of Cthulhu
  • , first published in 1928, is one of the greatest classics of American horror literature. Cthulhu himself, dreaming and waiting at the bottom of the sea, became a symbol for the entire mythology that Lovecraft created. François Baranger, an illustrator who has previously worked in film and games, was fascinated early on by Lovecraft’s creatures and visions which populated the darkest recesses of fantasy. In this book, he has taken on the work of illustrating Lovecraft’s most iconic novel.

Awesome, but ultimately felt let down...

Having been familiar with the artwork from this artist, I was excited for this book. I expected more from it though... I found the pictures were difficult to register and I wish they were displayed better in this publication. it's unfortunate because it is really fantastic work. Hope more are made, and more care is put into presentation and format.

Look over this book with sunlight illuminating its pages in order to appreciate the subtle use of light and shadow in the pictures. The book is beautiful and brought the stories to life in a powerful way. I'd love to see more of this artist's work illustrating Lovecraft. It was an inspired pairing that will not disappoint fans. I love the size of the book which lends itself to the wonderful illustrations.

A magnificent work of art

This is so much more than just a book, it's truly a work of art.
Baranger, the illustrator, is a genius in his depictions of Lovecraft's concepts, that are sometimes difficult to grasp, let alone portrait. He was able to translate the atmosphere of TCoC into magnificent paintings that also speak of unrivaled admiration for the author. A must for any Lovecraft connoisseur.

For Cthulhu fans! AWESOME!!

First thing, i thought this book was worth every penny. I bought because of the artwork and was not disappointed at all. The story is classic, amd this artwork is phenomenal! People have knocked it for its size, honestly, i was happy with the bigger size of the book because u can see more of the detail in each painting. I highly recommend for all Cthulhu fans.

Gorgeous book that captures Lovecraft's vision like no other

I have a lot of material related to Lovecraft, one of my favorite authors--everything from RPGs, to board games, to art books, etc. Nothing captures what I think is the true aesthetic of what I believe Lovecraft probably intended like this book and its companion books by the same artist. I absolutely do not regret picking up the three that are available and look forward to upcoming releases.

Look at dimensions of book before purchasing

Great graphics. The size was too much but that’s on me for not looking at the measurement.

Amazing Story, Great Illustrations

The story was great, and the Illustration's were also. The book is absolutely massive, a lot bigger then I thought, and I really love the dust jacket that comes on it!
