“A Tinseltown childhood free of malice, regret or self-pity. It’s like a Ron Howard movie between two covers… a picture of a family unencumbered by major neuroses, hang-ups or rivalries… links to an earlier, simpler age… refreshing [and] homespun.” — Wall Street Journal “…kind, imperturbable and appreciative… the lulling rhythms of harmonious boomer sibs clearing out the old family house. See, they seem to say, brotherly love is possible in Hollywood.” — New York Times “[A] nostalgic coming-of-age story that examines life in showbiz, fun adventures and, perhaps above all, the importance of family.” — CNN.com “Who would have thought Ron Howard could be exciting? And yet, he and his brother Clint have written a saga of talent, ambition, serendipity, and lust. Well, forget about the lust. It’s just not there. But Ron and Clint’s story of their remarkable coming-of-age in show business will thrill any reader.”xa0 — Steve Martin “I’ve known and loved the Howard family for forty-eight years, and there are stories here that surprised even me. A delightful, warm and fascinatingxa0story of a good life in show business.” — Malcolm Gladwell “This extraordinary book is not only a chronicle of Ron’s and Clint’s early careers and their wild adventures, but also a primer on so many topics—how an actor prepares, how to survive as a kid working in Hollywood, and how to be the best parents in the world! THE BOYS will surprise every reader with its humanity.” — Tom Hanks “How can the complexities of husbandxa0andxa0wives, parentsxa0andxa0children, brother to brother be contained between the pages of one book? It’s impossible and yet The Boys touched me in such a way that the Howards’xa0story---Rance,xa0Jean,xa0Ronxa0and Clint—will continue, for a long time,xa0to settle on my heart like soft rain.xa0It is about life and show business and how one, famous family connected both--with passion, loyalty,xa0respect and, most of all, love.”xa0 — Glenn Close “Actors and brothers Ron and Clint Howard reflect on growing up in Hollywood in this fascinating dual autobiography… Candid, humorous, and entertaining, this intimate account will be a hit with the brothers’ fans.”xa0 — Publishers Weekly "Filled with delightful stories from the sets of The Andy Griffith Show , Gentle Ben , The Music Man , and Happy Days , this memoir will be treasured by television and movie history buffs alike; fans of the Howards will greatly enjoy their teasing, loving banter, and evocation of a gentler era." — Library Journal (starred review) “It’s wholesome, earnest and contains just enough tidbits about Mayberry and “Happy Days” to satisfy ardent fans… In the end, it’s the remarkable story of a family that chose a very public line of work but managed to live by their own private values in an America that gave them the space to do just that.” — Associated Press "A treat for movie and TV buffs, this dual memoir is wholesome and satisfying…Fans of the Howards will revel in the details of their young ascents into the Hollywood spotlight.” — Kirkus Reviews Academy Award-winning filmmaker Ron Howard is one of his generation’s most popular directors. Highly motivated people who stayed true to their values.

My first audio book. Well spoken and easy to enjoy with great content. I made a young man read the story who desires to be a director. Even though from a different generation the truths remain the same.

Great, feel-good family story on the Howard family

Knew alot about brother Ron & Clint Howard going into this book. Most interesting was how dad and mom brought the kids up and took risk moving out to CA from OK. Dad Rance could only get supporting roles and work was sporadic, so family essentially lived off Ron's child acting, primarily w/starring role in popular 1960s hit The Andy Griffith Show, which ran for an impressive 8 seasons.

While I luved all the different stories from both Ron and Clint, they offered some interesting insight into some actors (both good and bad) that I didn't know. Loretta Swit was a b-tch to Ron Howard during his teen years during episode they were both involved in. 47- yr old Cloris Leachman was very flirty with teenager Ron at her house when going role, for her casting approval. He got the job.

The only thing that I didn't like reading - and expected at some point - was Ron's gradual early conservative leanings descending towards more liberal as he more often got involved with late 1960s/early 70s influences that went against some of his mid-western values upbringing. Especially when his popular & well-liked character Richie Cunningham, was from moderate-conservative upcoming (remember Howard was die-in-the-wool republican during few episodes...so was Fonzie!). This is who Ron became and leans heavily left now (Of course Pottsie & Ralph Mouth were democrats). Clint on the other hand was always rebellious, didn't have Ron's talent and got roles because he was cute, odd looking boy. Eventually as he got older while he could act he simply became odd-looking, borderline unattractive/weird-looking.

Great, feel-good book about normal family that made it in Hollywood with no help from any insider.

Wonderful

I grew up with the Howard brothers, they were constant TV companions so I was naturally interested in their book. I learned much I enjoyed about that era of Hollywood but the stories about Ron and Clint’s parents were treasures. Two real world hero’s that dreamed dreams, achieved dreams but never lost focus on raising boys with refreshing honesty, respect and discipline.

There were also some wonderful realizations for example I had no idea who Jean Howard was until I picked up the book. But for years I’ve admired her beautifully nuanced performance in Apollo 13. What a wonderful actress she was but gave up the best years of her career for her family.

Must read book!

Great book, lots of family dynamics

Even if you don't remember Ron Howard from the Andy Griffith days, or his brother Clint from Gentle Ben, it's an entertaining and mostly uplifting read about family history and family dynamics. Some great reminiscing of the good old days, but also some sad moments just like there is in real life. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Audio is fantastic. Book is great too!

We chose to listen to this while we drove 14 hours round trip. It was the best audio book we could have chosen. The hours flew by. We really enjoyed and were entertained by the two brothers telling theirs and their parents' stories. We had to finish the very ending at home a few days later and I think we both choked up. I can't describe how fun it was to hear about being on the set for The Andy Griffith Show and Gentle Ben and all the many shows and movies they were both in. What is most incredible though, is the story of how they were guided by their parents into successful careers and more than that, emotionally healthy futures. This book is like a great big hug. We really liked it.
