Description

About the Author Gertrude Chandler Warner, a teacher, wrote books that were both easy and fun to read. The 19 stories in the original Boxcar Children series have sold over three million copies in paperback. She was a lifelong resident of Putnam, Connecticut, until her death in 1979 at the age of 89. Phyllis Newman began her career as a child entertainer in vaudeville. She has appeared in many Broadway productions—earning a Tony Award for her role in Subways Are for Sleeping— as well as on television series such as One Life to Live and Thirtysomething. In June 2009 she received her second Tony Award, the Isabelle Stevenson Award, for her role in founding the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative of the Actor’s Fund.

Features & Highlights

  • Henry, Jessie, Violet and Benny, four orphaned brothers and sisters, suddenly appear in a small town. No one knows who these young wanderers are or where they have come from. Frightened to live with a grandfather they have never met, the children make a home for themselves in an abandoned red boxcar they discover in the woods. Henry, the oldest, goes to town to earn money and buy food and supplies. Ambitious and resourceful, the plucky children make a happy life for themselves–until Violet gets too sick for her brothers and sister to care for her.

The adventures of four resilient siblings

Young children ages 6 to 9 will love listening to these audio CDs which contain three tales from the Boxcar Children series by Gertrude Chandler Warner. All three tales are unabridged which always makes for a satisfying listening experience. The three stories contained here are The Boxcar Children, Surprise Island, and The Yellow House Mystery.

The first introduces listeners to Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny, i.e. the orphaned siblings also known as the Boxcar Children. The poor kids are left without a home, and try to make it on their own the best they can. In Surprise Island, the four siblings spend the summer on their grandfather's island and end up having loads of adventures. Finally, in The Yellow House Mystery, the four children unlock some mysterious secrets associated with the old yellow house on their grandfather's property.

Tony Award winner Phyllis Newman's narration lends a vividness to the stories that make the children's adventures seem all the more compelling and exciting. The CDs run about 7 hours and 15 minutes, on 6 compact discs.

The Boxcar Children

A wonderfully told story. Our 6 year old son can't stop listening to it! We even ordered the same one as a birthday gift for a friend.

Shawn's Review

I loved this book series & the audio version did not disappoint. The Boxcar Children are about 4 orphaned children just trying to get by & end up living in A old train boxcar before finding A place to call home, & this is only the first of their adventures. A really good story for any age.

Great classic, a childhood favorite.

Nice to have classics on cd. I keep it in the car for the grandson to listen to on road trips. He had seen the cartoon but the book is nicely narrated and he enjoyed it all over again.

Still a favorite after all these years

Bought for my granddaughter to listen to on the way home from school. This was one of my favorite stories as a child. It has everything--intelligent, independent children who creatively solve their problems.Loving adults who help and ultimately rescue by a rich grandfather.

Appropriate book for five year olds! Great listen on car ride!

My kids, five and three enjoyed listening to this book on a long car ride. Three year old fell asleep, five year old boy really enjoyed this and wanted to continue to listen, instead of watching a movie on IPAD! That says something to me about the storyline of ths book.
