Features & Highlights

  • The Black Knight Chronicles: Lots of Vampires. No Sparkles. Serious Snark.BOOK ONE: HARD DAY'S KNIGHTChildren are missing. The police are stumped. Halloween is coming, and an ancient evil is on the horizon. The vampires are the good guys. This is not your ordinary fall weekend in Charlotte, North Carolina. Vampire private detectives Jimmy Black and Greg Knightwood have been hired to save a client from being cursed for all eternity, but end up in a bigger mess than they ever imagined.Suddenly trapped in the middle of a serial kidnapping case, Jimmy and Greg uncover a plot to bring forth an ancient evil. Soon, they've enlisted the help of a police detective, a priest, a witch, a fallen angel and a strip club proprietor to save the world. This unlikely band of heroes battles zombies, witches, neuroses and sunburn while cracking jokes and looking for the perfect bag of O-negative.BOOK TWO: BACK IN BLACKVampire detectives Jimmy Black and Greg Knightwood investigate a series of assaults plaguing the alleys of Charlotte, North Carolina. The string of hate crimes becomes personal when Jimmy's just-maybe-main-squeeze Detective Sabrina Law's cousin is attacked. Helping a lady out could get the boys killed when they end up in Faerie. Before long, they're up to their butts in trolls, dark fae and a grand battle royale. The odds are against them, but to the boys, this is just another day on the night shift--if the night shift included a steel cage match of supernaturals.BOOK THREE: KNIGHT MOVESEt tu, Vampire? The boys discover they may be tied to a string of serial killings at the college and that they suddenly aren't the only vampire game in town. The vampire count in Charlotte is at least three. Or more. As far as the unhappy boys are concerned, anything more than two is a crowd not to be tolerated. While tracking down the killer and the competition, they encounter coeds, booby traps (not related to the coeds) and a hirsute bounty hunter with a moon fetish and a bad attitude. To catch the killer, Jimmy will have to survive a dive headfirst into the great unwashed horde of Dorkdom (game night at the local comic shop). What's a red-blood-drinking vampire to do? His job. Again.Praise for the Black Knight Chronicles--"Honestly, this is one of the best books that I've read this year and certainly a new series that I will be following." --Black Lagoon Reviews"This is another great book in what will hopefully be a large and successful series. I know I will be eagerly awaiting the next installment." -- Indie Book Blog"I love this book. Witches and Faeries and Vampires... Oh my!

Show some love for John G. Hartness' new and vastly improved Black Knight Chronicles - Omnibus Edition. The original trilogy is still here, but John adds much more detail, more history of our favorite bloodsucking detectives, and many more laughs. Don't misunderstand me, the original three were great, but the omnibus comes with much more polish, like that shiny new toy you had as a kid, but this time you don't have to take a bath with it to keep it clean. Even for those who have read the trilogy should check this out. Totally worth shelling out some cash for.
Thanks again John,
Still waiting on book 4,
Ryan G.

Not bad, but not great either

While the vampire trope is so overdone at this point it's gag-worthy, the nerdy, imperfect vampires of this series still have some appeal. I found the humor to be variable in quality, but as another reviewer noted, the editing was done well enough that most of the common 'eyebiters' were avoided.

Good:
- Humorous in Jim Butcher sort of way
- Unusual take on the vampire trope
- Pop-culture references galore (this can be good or bad depending)

Bad:
- Plots are flat and relatively lifeless
- Author insists on weaving in religion while making little effort to understand the religions he's using (Catholic fixation, e.g.)
- Character personalities are often defined or ignored in order to "score the joke"

It was acceptable, and would make a good beach read, but not much more.

Best Vampire Book I Have Read In A LONG TIME

The joke's are cliche the action is fast and furious and the series just keeps getting better and better. This is one of the most fun I have had reading a new story in a long time. If you have a little bit of nerd inside of you and are not afraid to see it in yourself and have a lot of fun at the same time than this is the series for you.

Jay & Silent Bob Open A Detective Agency...As Vampires

Good solid fun read. I like the idea of a pudgy vampire and for obvious reasons I picture Greg (the best friend) as played by Kevin Smith. You'll understand when you read it, if the heading of this review doesn't give it away.

I only give 4 stars because the main character is...tough to put into words. Lets just say you don't constantly refer to yourself as `the guy who hits things really hard' when you get your butt kicked in *every* fight. Seriously, three books, lotsa fights, no wins. I don't count it a win when other vampires, Faeries, weres, and dragons pile in on your side. Greg the sidekick vampire is actually a far more interesting character; Jimmy is more like the drunk annoying friend always trying to start something and needing someone else to finish it.

Great read for all

This book is fast paced and fun to read with great wit and storytelling for all kinds of readers. I really enjoyed all three books, and you can't beat the value of getting them all included in one volume. Can't wait for future books in this series!

Great fun, good read.

Vampire books with a sense of humor, sarcasm, cliche, and just plain fun. You can't help smiling, and sometimes even laughing out loud at the antics of the two main vamps who are stuck with their barely-out-of-their-teens bodies for eternity. No sparkly, perfect, boring vamps in these books. The two main vamps are your average nerds, one tall and gangly, the other overweight, trying to do some good in their afterlife. The books do not take themselves seriously so you find yourself just going along for a fantastical ride no matter how ridiculous some of it is. Great fun. Good read.

black knight chronicles-less than riveting

This was a good buy & had good reviews. Not a very sophisticated read, though. If not for the bits of violence, attempts at sexual innuendo, and the random, afterthought of a curse word, it would probably make a good teen book.

Black Knight Rises!!!

John Hartness sets a high bar with both the Bubba and Quincy Harker series and as far as I am concerned he leaps over it with distance to spare with The Black Knight Chronicles. As with his other works, The Black Knight Chronicles are a straight forward fun read. But that doesn't mean the characters are involved or well written. Each character is given quirks and flaws that make them relatable. Hartness himself says that this entire series came from the question "why aren't there any fat vampires" and he has a LOT of fun answering that question himself. The dynamic between James, Greg and their priest (I shit you not) best friend Mike feels like a genuine friendship that I would be a part of. Detective Law is a great foil for them to play off of and the other cast of characters they find themselves surrounded by lends itself to both adventures and misadventures as they constantly find themselves out of depth and in over their heads. But that's pretty much life, isn't it? As with his other works, the South itself (Charlotte specificially) is as vibrant and real of a character as the human and humanoid ones you grow to care about.

Do yourself a favour and devour this one like it was a fresh bag of AB neg!!!
