Description

From Booklist Although there seems to be no end to picture books about kisses, readers will still find themselves puckering up as they follow a blue-and-white penguin through this guided tour of kisses. Place has no bearing on the penguin, which appears alongside sheep, elephants, ladybugs, giraffes, and a plethora of other animals, all in the midst of their particular style of smooch. Among these rounded, vibrantly colored, and always adorable creatures, the penguin observes good places to kiss, sizes of kisses, kinds of kisses, and even kisses from nature, as when a light rain touches the skin. The text blends ending rhymes (“The tallest kiss is a tricky kind. / The smallest kiss is hard to find”) with internal rhymes (“The snow’s kiss on your face is ace”), but the occasional resulting awkwardness shouldn’t bother young listeners. The book ends with the best kiss of all as the penguin, now blushing, receives a loving smooch from its caregiver. Pair with Karen Katz’s Counting Kisses (2001) and Christopher Loupy’s Hugs and Kisses (2002) to extend the sentiments. Preschool-Grade 1. --Angela Leeper Review WALSH, Joanna. The Biggest Kiss. illus. by Judi Abbot. unpaged. S & S/Paula Wiseman Bks. Dec. 2011. RTE $12.99. ISBN 978-1-4424-2769-3. LC number unavailable. PreS-Gr 2–“Kisses on noses,/kisses on toes-es./Sudden kisses when you least supposes” starts this endearing selection. The text goes on to describe myriad creatures who deliver and receive a variety of kisses in their own unique ways. The engaging rhymes are perfectly complemented by the colorful, whimsical illustrations. A wonderful cuddle-up-and-read choice.–Debbie Lewis, Alachua County Library District, FL School Library Journal , November 2011The Biggest Kiss Joanna Walsh, illus. by Judi Abbot. S&S/Wiseman, $12.99 (32p) ISBN 978-1-4424-2769-3 A penguin tours the animal kingdom to see how kissing stacks up among different species. Newcomer Abbot’s characters are essentially adorable variations on rounded and curvilinear shapes, ranging from pert to plump. She laughs in the face of zoological accuracy, anthropomorphizing with abandon: in the spread, “Frogs like to kiss, and dogs like to kiss,” she imagines a kissing booth run by a frog prince, as pups of various breeds line up to pay $1 for the privilege. The titular kiss does not belong to the big blue elephant that sprawls across another spread, extending its trunk to a mostly unseen partner (while providing a perch for two kissing ants). Rather, it’s the kiss that comes from a grownup penguin, who clearly loves a cuddle as much as the narrator does. -- Publishers Weekly Walsh’s rhyming text is full of cutesy rhythms: “Kisses on noses, kisses on toes-es. Sudden kisses when you least supposes.” Sometimes the phrasing stumbles: “Who likes to kiss? I do! I do! Even the shy do. Why not try, too?” But toddlers and young preschoolers will probably not mind. They will be too engaged in spotting the lively penguin on each spread and too charmed by Abbot’s winsome illustrations that fittingly extend the wording in the story. Patient dogs queue up for a smooch from a frog prince, cool blue “ ’normous elephants” contrast strikingly with bright red “little tiny ants” and a bewildered monkey endures a smattering of lipstick kisses. Be the kiss small or tall, one to start or end the day, young readers are reminded that “the very best kiss… / is a kiss from you!” Perhaps no big surprise but comforting nonetheless. -- Kirkus The Biggest Kiss By Joanna Walsh and illustrated by Judi Abbot (Paula Wiseman; ISBN 9781442427693; December 2011; Fall catalog p. 38) “Kisses on noses, kisses on toes-es. Sudden kisses when you least supposes” begins this delicious paean to parental affection. Walsh’s genial rhymes and hypercute drawings by Abbot, a first-time illustrator, make this square-shaped picture book, first published in Britain, stand out from the Valentine pack. Spots of humor amid the syrup also help: “Some kisses are misses, they land on the ear or near” accompanies a frowning monkey speckled with lipstick marks. Some kisses, let’s face it, are too sweet. -- New York Times Book Review , February 12, 2012 About the Author Joanna Walsh has written and illustrated several books for children, including The Biggest Kiss , The Perfect Hug , and I Love Mom , all illustrated by Judi Abbot.Judi Abbot studied illustration in Milan, Italy. Very sweet

The Biggest Kiss, written by Joanna Walsh and illustrated by Judi Abbot is a really sweet book, but one intended for the very very young toddlers. There are very few words in this book, but the colorful, whimsical illustrations still make it a delightful bedtime story for your favorite little one.

As the title implies, it's all "about KISSES both big and small....but who has the best kiss of all?"

Bunnies, birds, frogs, dogs, ants, elephants, fish worms, bears? What about snow kisses and rain kisses? They count too.

It's a fun story, a quick before bed story. One that I'm sure will end with the best kiss ever, the one you give to your special little person before they drift off to sleep.

Sweet picture book - perfect for sharing

When this picture book arrived at my house I just happened to be babysitting for my 14 month old granddaughter. So we opened the package and sat down to read it together. In this case I will count her opinion as worth more than mine. She loved The Biggest Kiss!

14 month olds are not known for sitting still so I was amazed that she sat on my lap for the entire book. Granted the text isn't lengthy, but I think it's a record for my granddaughter anyway.

I have a number of books for my granddaughter on my ipod touch (encased in the Fisher Price apptivity case. Definitely worth it!) Those books come in handy when we're stuck waiting somewhere or are at a restaurant. Her reaction to this picture book was quite different than to ebooks or even the average board book.

First of all this was much bigger than the screen on my ipod or even a board book. Second, the paper is lovely - heavy with just a little bit of texture. It's a great medium for Judi Abbot's illustrations, which are simple, colorful and lively. The illustrations are really my favorite part of the book. According to the cover flap this is Abbot's first book but I expect we'll see many more from her. I love the cuddly critters that fill this book.

I was less excited about the prose. There is no story, just examples of different types of kisses. That's fine, but I didn't feel there was any certain rhythm to the prose, as there is in many picture books. Also no building to the best kiss, revealed on the final page. The examples of kisses are cute and funny, but I think the pages could be taken apart and shuffled and the reader wouldn't notice.

Still, I am very pleased with this book and very happy I got to share it with my granddaughter. It's a good choice for bed time or any other time you want to cuddle up and read with your little one.

A decent bedtime book for very young children

With echoes of the well-known Seuss classic [[ASIN:0394806220 Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?]] as well as the virtually unknown (sold only in Gap stores) [[ASIN:B000P9GZ82 I Love You When]], The Biggest Kiss is a pleasant book whose somewhat underwhelming text is compensated by its endearing illustrations.

As was the case with Leslie Jonath's I Love You When, you can improve the cadence when you read this to your children. For example:

"I wish for a kiss before breakfast,
to start the day right."

(Insert "off" between "day" and "right" or change "before" to "at")

"And a kiss at the end
to say, "Good night!"

(Change "the end" to "bedtime")

However, no amount of poetic license can make some lines rhyme.

"The snow's kiss on your face is ace." OK
"The rain's kiss on your skin is fun." Not quite

The illustrations by first-timer Judi Abbot are very, very nice. And like illustrator Emilie Chollat's white rabbit, this penguin's omnipresence invites a Where's Waldo-type search for 2- and 3-year-olds in the room.

This book may be a decent choice to augment your bedtime arsenal which already includes [[ASIN:0763641758 Guess How Much I Love You]] and [[ASIN:0060775858 Goodnight Moon]]. While the Amazon Product Details do not list a recommended age, I certainly would not buy this if your kids are already 4.

Kisses, Kisses, Kisses

All kinds of kisses are described in this delightful book! Who doesn't like a kiss? From babies to adults, a kiss is the perfect way to express our feelings. My twin grandsons love the beautiful illustrations. We'll laugh over the many kinds of kisses as they grow older. They're only infants now, but we love sharing this book together.

My two year-old loves the pictures

My two year-old loves the illustrations in this little book, but I've found the words leave something to be desired. A few pages are fun to read aloud, providing a great companion to the drawings. But others simply aren't. I enjoy reading books to my son when its easy to establish a rhythm from page to page, but this book lacks any semblance of an overarching rhythm. It's like a dozen images with accompanying descriptions, all exploring the same theme, gathered together into a book, rather than telling a story from page to page.

Great illustrations are the reason you buy this book

Love the illustrations. They are cute and depict plenty of action. Although they are a bit small that won't be an issue with an older child. Two years of age and older would be a good target group. The text is passable but nothing special. If you decide to purchase this book it will because you fell in love with the cool pictures which are worth the price of admission!

The 2 year old loved it

My two year old niece loves this book. The illustrations are very colorful and engaging. The text is simple and easy to read. The pages are thick, which allows her to turn the pages all by herself without ripping them.

Although I though the story was a little weird (its very Dr. Seuss with rhyming and using opposites, but takes a uncharacteristic turn on one page when the story becomes rhyming nonsense, something about lipstick and honey and tummies), I found it easy to read without putting myself in a rhyming trance. And it does have a very sweet ending.

I recommend this book for young readers who like to point their fingers to follow along and turn the pages.
