Description

"This book is the most comprehensive collection of New Orleans king cakes that exists! Flipping through the pages is like watching our beautiful traditions come to life in historic and modern ways, all the while making us very hungry.”— Alon Shaya , James Beard Award-Winning Chef and Founder, Pomegranate Hospitality"We love everything about king cake! The explosion of different styles in the last thirty years mirrors the explosion in New Orleans food. The creativity is exciting and just plain fun. The tradition of getting the baby and having to bring the next king cake is so New Orleans. And so is this book by Matt Haines—so New Orleans and so overdue."— Ti Adelaide Martin and Lally Brennan , Co-Proprietors of James Beard Award-Winning Restaurant Commander’s Palace"For years we’ve been hearing, ‘Someone should write a book about the history of the king cake.’ Well, Matt Haines has done it, telling its incredible story through the eyes of seventy-five New Orleans-area bakers, painting a vibrant picture of our region’s diversity and its tug of war between tradition and modernity. BRAVO!"— Arthur Hardy , Publisher, Mardi Gras Guide "No mere dessert, king cake in New Orleans is a beloved tradition, a creative muse, and an emblem of home. King cake culture runs deep, and Matt Haines gives you an inside look at what makes it so vibrant and delicious."— Ian McNulty , Food Writer, The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate Matt Haines tried to eat as many different versions of king cake that he could during the 2017 Mardi Gras season, and ended up sampling over 80 different varieties. That was just before he hiked the entire Appalachian trail. When he returned to New Orleans from this amazing feat he began his writing career. Since then Matt has written for Voice of America, Lonely Planet, CNN Underscored, Zagat, Fodor's Travel, Rosetta Stone, Great Big Story, AlltimePower, The Times-Picayune , The New Orleans Advocate , Gambit Weekly , Very Local New Orleans and GoNOLA.com, as well as technology companies like Align and nonprofit organizations such as 504ward. Matt loves writing about food, travel and just about anything that helps him better understand people and their unique motivations. He lives in New Orleans, Louisiana. Randy Krause Schmidt is a New Orleans based portrait and food photographer. He’s had a sweet tooth for as long as he can remember, so he was elated to collaborate with Matt Haines on this celebration of such an integral part of the region’s food culture and the talented bakers who make it possible. His work has been featured in Vogue, Southern Living, Louisiana Cookin’, New Orleans Magazine, Where Magazine, Eater , and others.

Nice looking book

This book is a nice coffee table book for history and photos of King Cake. Minor disappointments: It wasn’t comprehensive in listing all the major King Cake bakeries (Keller’s, for example) and there was only one recipe in the book. Would have been fun to see several contemporary recipes for the different King Cake variations, like with the Danish-style dough, as well as options for various fillings like cream cheese and praline.

NOT a cookbook!

Just want to make it crystal clear that this is not a cookbook. There is only one recipe in the book,, and it isn't a great one, and is not even from one of the featured bakers. Now, this book does not purport to be a cookbook, but it is frustrating to see so many variations without a cook's eye to how they are really made. If you are a serious baker, you will be inspired, but never will you be instructed. I think this is a big failing. If you buy food books for the stories and the pretty pictures, both of which are done well, you will not be disappointed. But it could have been more.

Great historical account!

Fantastic book! I grew up in New Orleans and was there for the history and the places that created the best king cakes imaginable. Some are no longer there but I was there during the BEST king cake of all time that came from McKenzie's Bakery!

Disappointed

So unfortunate this book doesn’t contain more history and older photos-the photos are too similar - too many portraits of commercial bakers with cake or eating cake. It really is a showcase for current bakeries and restaurants in NOLA - too bad not one gives a recipe for those of us who don’t live there. Just one recipe and not a very good one. This book will become dated very quickly.

Beautiful book!

Family lives in NOLA, obsessed as everyone down there with Mardi Gras, beads, king cake, etc. Bought this for my sister, in hopes she doesn't already have it. It's got beautiful photos, great stories about all the famous bakeries & bakers, and is a HUGE book. Well worth the price (and the price for shipping it down there for her!)

Fantastic Read!

When I received my copy of the book I had completely forgotten it was a hardcover! The book has a bit of weight, but it is incredibly well designed and has a quality feel to it. As someone who spent a few years in New Orleans, it's nice to walk down memory lane and reminisce on some of my favorite spots and their cakes. This isn't some cheap gimmick book either, Matt (and Randy) really took the time and care to thoroughly research King Cake. Their passion comes through in an excellent presentation that I recommend to all!
