A dramatic, rewarding story about a woman reconnecting with family, nature, and herself.”— Kirkus Reviews “ The Best Part of Us by Sally Cole-Misch is a lush debut novel which explores nature, family, and land with nuance and patience.xa0What hooked me first in this novel was the utter lusciousness of the prose. . . . Another aspect of The Best Part of Us that struck a chord was its exploration of the complexity of family dynamics . . . helping readers to understand these characters as people and not caricatures . . .xa0a beautiful love letter to the natural world and to human connection.”— Affinity Magazine “Sally Cole-Misch’s novel is a lush and lovely homage to the natural places where her protagonist grew up. . . . The plot spanning past and present kept me enthralled and engaged throughout my reading of this exceptionally good book. The Best Part of Us is most highly recommended.”— Readers’ Favorite “This is not just storytelling, it's a lived experience. Sally's description of the cold, crystal waters and magnificent landscape of the North Country is so vivid I feel as though I paid it a visit. The story’s depth and vivid characterization are unforgettable. At a time when we seem to have lost our way in navigating the human relationship with place, Sally has provided a true compass to help us find home. ”—Dave Dempsey, 2009 Michigan Author of the Year, author of ten books and renowned Great Lakes environmental policy expert“With exquisite descriptions of Canadian lake and forest country and the Ojibway life rooted there, Cole-Misch expertly weaves the elements of those differing cultures, fraught but tightly bound family relationships, young love, old love, and the wonder of coming of age—at every age—into a luminous novel. The Best Part of Us is a beautiful story that will keep you up reading, and then keep you company for a long time afterward.”—Barbara Stark-Nemon, award-winning author of Even in Darkness and Hard Cider “A story so evocative you can smell the lake and hear the loons. . . . The Best Part of Us draws in lyrical strokes the many shades of grief and the healing magic of place.”—Jenni Ogden, bestselling author of A Drop in the Ocean “Place plays a key role in this novel, with an island in northern Ontario lovingly observed through the eyes of our protagonist, Beth. Troubles come in the form of her family’s attachment to the land and issues around who rightfully owns it—their Welsh ancestors or the Native peoples of earlier times—and the book raises and explores these important, contemporary questions with care and sensitivity. Their resolution is complicated—at once hopeful and messy, like all imperfect decisions. The Best Part of Us is a lovely, engrossing book about place, family, history, and cultural sensitivity.”—Angela Pneuman, award-winning author of Home Remedies and Lay It on My Heart “ The Best Part of Us is a captivating celebration of nature that pushes us to consider our connections to the Earth. . . . Her words paint the Earth as our ultimate refuge, a source of strength to draw from and live intimately within. . . . Each character is multi-layered and built beautifully to show how variable the human relationships to the environment can be.”— The Michigan Daily Sally Cole-Misch is a writer and environmental communicator who advocates for the natural world through work and play. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri, a master’s degree in environmental education and international water policy from the University of Michigan, and a certificate in fiction writing from Stanford University.xa0Throughout her career, she’s focused on communicating our essential connection with nature―particularly the Great Lakes―and the role each of us can play to restore, protect, and enjoy all that nature gives to us. Sally lives in Michigan with her husband and son and enjoys hiking, kayaking, sailing, skiing, and gardening.

Theirs was an unshakeable bond with nature, family, and friends, renewed every summer on their island of granite and pines. But that bond was threatened and then torn apart, first as rights to their island were questioned and then by nature itself, and the family was forced to leave. Fourteen years later, Beth has created a new life in urban Chicago. There, she’s erected a solid barrier between the past and present, no matter how much it costs—until her grandfather asks her to return to the island to determine its fate. Soaked Me In NATURE!

A lovely novel set at an island lake house with family, friends, nature. Summer after summer brings wonderful family traditions. The beauty of the place sung on every page, transporting me. The Best Part of Us connects the natural world to the interiority of Beth and her complex feelings towards her extended family and her past. The descriptions of Beth's summers spent on a Canadian Island made me long for such richness myself, but of course, a big complex family isn't so simple, and comes with layers of stories, secrets, and pasts all entangled together. The author deals with the native peoples with grace and sensitivity, and offers up an important lens on family history and the bonds that keep us connected, no matter the past.

Creates a longing, then satisfies it

Like so many of us, Beth tries to compartmentalize and abandon a crucial part of herself in order to avoid pain. She builds a successful—albeit frenetic—life in the city, and devotes herself to those she loves. Then an unexpected correspondence calls her back to the island of her greatest joys and sorrow. Will she go?

As she decides, she relives her early summers, where guests gather at a pristine northern lake to shed cities and soak in nature so transformative one wonders why they would ever leave. Lake peoples' mundane, distracted, and pain-killing behaviors contrast with crystalline hours of meaningful relationships fueled by rhythms of the natural world.
And then the horrific happens, and the pain of remembering overrules the island's magic.

This book turned pages in me. Drew me in slowly until I was ready to claim an island myself—a place of beauty and redemption and, ultimately joy. Ready to return to the deepest place where I am most myself, and in going there, am best able to love well.

Great book

Loved this book. Took me back to my summers in the woods of WV and being with family. Enjoyed the dynamics our main character must travel thru in her life too.

A heartwarming and bittersweet story

THE BEST PART OF US delivers as we are introduced to a family vacationing on an island in Northern Michigan. While we learn the dynamics of the family structure, author Sally Cole-Misch provides readers with an intense character-study that culminates in tragedy and redemption.

Cole-Misch’s writing is captivating and vivid – “To Beth, her sister felt like standing next to a winter fire: other people always wanted to be near Maegan to feel the warmth of her glow.”

THE BEST PART OF US is a beautiful story and a true page-turner ‘til the very end.

Connecting to nature

If you connect to nature and how it forms us, you will love Sally Cole-Misch's book. This family conflict between what is theirs and what belongs to the Objibwe tribe kicks off in the first few pages. It is not an easy choice for Beth, the protagonist but she must make it. The writing is at once riveting and lyrical, alive with characters and setting. A wonderful read.

Downright beautiful

I sank into this novel with such pleasure that I didn’t want it to end. Sally Cole-Misch is a master of language and of creating a sense of place. She makes it all visceral: you’ll shiver at the cold of the early mornings and feel the rough texture of stone underfoot and visualize the wind whipping across the surface of the dazzling lake as if you are there. The author is equally strong on personal relationships and emotions; I especially loved the character of Beth as a preteen – she’s an utter charmer. I equally impressed by the delicacy with which Cole-Misch handles complicated and important political issues -- the central conflict in the story has no easy answers as she presents it, and I found myself empathizing with each of the characters and their perspectives. For anyone who loves stories of family, beautiful settings, and cares deeply about the environment – really, for just about anyone – this book is a must read.

When the Personal and Primal Become Political--a Unique family story, one member being Nature

Bravo to author Cole-Misch for crafting a story that takes two of the key political issues of the day--climate change and indigenous displacement--and weaves them into a family story that sits them at the "table," as close and personal as the survival and ownership of cherished summers on the lake.
She challenges with questions about a dilemma unfolding before us as humans--what have we wrought? What can be remedied? A unique and worthy perspective on responsibility in a difficult world.

Love the Structure and Test of Family Loyalties

Don’t you love it when a book starts with a mysterious letter that tests family loyalties, jumps back to a gorgeous, tender-hearted growing up time, then returns to that mystery in need of urgent resolution? That’s the structure for Sally Cole-Misch’s THE BEST PART OF US, which should be on anyone’s reading list who loves the natural world and the hold it has on the human heart.

Beautiful book

I agree with other reviewers that the book was a bit slow to start, but after finishing it, I appreciated every single page. Sally Cole-Misch painted a vivid and enchanting picture of an inland lake in the Great Lakes region. As a lifelong Michigan resident who spends parts of every summer "up north" on a river, I appreciate the feelings of being immersed in Great Lakes nature. The characters were realistic and their stories were beautiful yet often heartbreaking. I loved it, and it will stay with me for some time.
