noom-like, not a diet, eat how you want, but learn how/why you eat and be in control

What you get out of it , is what you put into it. Just like a piece of exercise equipment or fitness game. People are always like, "bUt Do YoU LoSe wEiGht WiTh iT?". Well, the thing (book, equipment) wont in and of itself unless actual actions are taken. No matter what, if weightloss is your goal, then most of that is going to happen through our eating choices. This book provides an outline to help making better choices as a lifestyle change using a cognitive therapy approach (like noom). So yeh, maybe it will help you, maybe it won't. I'm in the early stage of getting back on track. Maybe I will update at a later time. I have some issues beyond the scope of this book, but I'm finding some precious nuggets that are helping me. Actually reading stuff I haven't considered before. As someone with a Masters in Psychology and a minor in Nutrition, there is still much to be learned.

OK, so.. I absolutely dislike the phrase, "train your brain to think like a thin person". I'm not comfortable with the use of it as people can be healthy and active at higher weights. Not everyone wants to be "thin". Not everyone who eats junk and is inactive is fat, and not everyone who is active and eats super healthy is thin. There is so much more going on, and the phrasing of this book seems to nod towards that. Even if that isn't the case, then it is sensational. The long culture of "thin vs fat" (which is really good vs bad, right?) mentality is not helped by this phrasing. It is subversive, even if not meant to be. However, in this application I could suss out that it is more about how to think like someone who doesn't have food or eating issues. Not meant to be shaming. So indeed, the phrasing is more of an eye catcher. Normally I would pass this over, but it was brought up a few times (I was looking for a nooom like book to read, no membership required) and it was immediately mentioned how much they hate that phrasing, but the info is worthwhile. THAT is the ONLY reason why I bought this. OTHER people hated the phrasing but found the info useful.

That phrasing is (mostly) abandoned in the actual book. There are a lot of good nuggets of wisdom in this book. I really liked one that I read early on has to do with when you are triggered to want something, and you are deciding whether to have it or not. There is a small chain of events (and thoughts) that occur up to making that decision. This process creates added tension, which is of course unpleasant. "Often you'll try to alleviate that tension by deciding to eat. But before you eat it, take note:...what usually happens is that you find your tension abating as you reach for food--BEFORE you even put it in your mouth. However, just as the decision to eat can reduce tension, the decision to NOT eat can also reduce tension." That gave me a lot to think about. How incredibly accurate that is. We feel tension before eating (when deciding whether to eat something or not), and we often think that we are reducing tension by following through. But actually the tension is cut by simply making the decision. Doesnt matter what the answer is, the tension is cut by making the final decision. So now knowing that, I can decide easier that I dont want the food right now. Which brings me to...

When we are hungry, I know that I will start looking for food. I hate that it was worded that we look at it like an emergency as it sounded so extreme, but I let that settle in my mind a little and thought-- why yes, I kinda do think of it as an emergency. I dont need to eat all the time and all day long, but when the feeling of hunger comes on I am looking to squelch it real soon. In the mindset of someone who isnt driven by food (aka the "thin thinking person/brain", the awareness of hunger comes on, and they know that food in the future but dont dwell on it. ie; hungry at 3pm, but dinner is coming up in a couple of hours, can wait. I imagine if it means grabbing a little snack versus overeating at dinner, then I would choose this. But as eating choices, awareness, and cues become stronger, then being able to refrain may get better too.

Before it even dives in "diet" (no prescribed diet here, just pick a couple of diets and stick with it. This is one of few books that recognize that pretty much any diet out there is the same in terms of calories. All the rest is how it is spun to make it something to buy into. So go with what appeals to you, your lifestyle, your budget), it gets into figuring out your "why", and to make a list of reasons and advantages. Plan to refer back to all this daily, even multiple times a day. Even if we on some level remember why, seeing it in words is stronger than vague recall. There is plenty of cognitive behavior therapy, plenty of advice and detailed info. Most I have been working through, some stuff I will never do (find a diet coach-- as an extreme introvert on a tight budget, I am not seeking a diet coach). But hey, that could change.

There is other stuff I am not into, and some of it does a slight shaming-- well whatever you were doing before didnt work, and this definitely works if you just follow it. I am not into that, but I will still give it a solid 4 stars for providing a pretty good amount of info, and if you like your hand held then this may be appealing to you. It is worth the read. I have read terrible terrible terrible books, and this is something I find refreshing.

Hoping for success

I purchased "the Beck Diet solution: Train your brain to think like a think person" because my daughter highly recommended it to me. She has been successful at losing 30 pounds. I have always been a yoyo dieter and want to lose the weight for the last time and keep it off. The author has some good ideas and I am trying to incorporate some of them in my daily schedule. It has made me very aware that I never take time to enjoy what I'm eating....she says sit down and eat quietly and concentrate on what you are eating instead of standing at the kitchen counter. I'm working on this one. My problem with this book occured very soon after starting it, when she said get yourself a diet coach. I have recently moved and have not meet a person here that I would be comfortable sharing my thoughts and actions with. However, the author has tips and suggestions for working through everything she introduces in the book. I will continue to seek a diet coach for much needed support while dieting. I have determination and believe this book will guide me through to a thinner me.

Use any Diet and a set of principles to lose weight

Dr. Beck is an expert in cognitive therapy. She helps people change the way they think. The book puts the process in perspective. It is not step by step, but prepares you to implement the program with the help of the workbook. It isn't about what you eat so much as it is about what you think and say to yourself. One of the main ingredients in her program is an accountability interview built in to your program. I highly recommend this program.

Great cbt, self help book

This uses classic cbt from a reputable author. If psychotherapy treatment models are not something you've previously learned about, take some time to read about the cbt basics with a google search. This book provides basic coping strategies for frequent challenges overweight people face. It's not a magic pill, these skills take dedication and practice. Excellent for the nonprofessional.

Crucial strategies

I preferred the book to the workbook; if you're just getting one. The workbook is a good repeat exercise. There are strategies in this book that will reveal lingering habits that sabotage achieving and maintaining a healthy weight., My only complaint is the constant use of the word "diet." Changing habits is a stronger goal.
