Finally, A Medical Doctor Who Actually Understands Autoimmune Disease

One of the most misunderstood chronic health problems of our day has got to be autoimmune disease. And because it manifests itself in a variety of ways, conventional medicine chooses to examine each condition on the autoimmunity spectrum individually, including Graves' disease,
Psoriasis,
Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Celiac disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Chronic fatigue syndrome, Crohn's disease, Ulcerative colitis, Multiple Sclerosis,
Scleroderma, and Type 1 Diabetes. But Dr. Amy Myers is a medical doctor who actually understands all the intricacies of autoimmune disease because she sees the worst of the worst day in and day out in her functional medicine clinic in Austin, Texas.

Now Dr. Myers has taken all those years of experience working with real patients and put it into book form for automimmune sufferers to glean from her wisdom and help them get on the road to recovery after years of frustration working with the ineptitude of mainstream medicine. THE AUTOIMMUNE SOLUTION isn't about some quick fix, but rather identifying the methodical steps (referred to as The Myers Way) it takes to heal your body from what ails you. She has successfully used this approach with thousands of patients and seeks to share what she has learned in an easy-to-understand program that anyone suffering from this can begin implementing immediately.

The Myers Way consists of four primary components:

1. Eliminating toxic and inflammatory foods.
2. Adding in foods and supplements to repair the damage to the gut and body.
3. Identifying and eliminating culprit environmental toxins from your household products.
4. Removing any infections and dispelling stress that would exacerbate the immune system.

For people familiar with the Paleo diet, The Myers Way uses this way of eating as the nutritional basis to help optimize overall health. THE AUTOIMMUNE SOLUTION provides so many other elements in this process that can make a real difference in your pursuit of beating your autoimmune condition. Dr. Myers herself overcame an autoimmune condition and has seen her method work well for all kinds of people. Stop being frustrated and start getting better by reading this book!

Probably a good book for carnivores!

I have several pesky autoimmune ailments, thus I had been looking forward to see if this book offered any valuable solutions. But I have to say, no, not for me.

Four of the most important chapters are as follows: Heal your Gut, Get rid of Gluten, grains and legumes, Tame the toxins and Heal your Infections and Relieve your stress.
1) Heal your gut. I never really found out how to heal my gut. Step 1 was to remove the bad foods and I'll get to that in the next point. Step 2 was to restore the Good. Here it is suggested to take digestive enzymes, and this might be a good idea, Step 3 is to reinoculate with healthy bacteria, and I have been taking good probiotics for years and also fermented vegetables regularly. Step 4. Repair the gut. Here the suggestions are to take L-glutamine and Omega-3 fish oils. I haven't been able to get hold of the former as yet, but have been taking krill oil capsules, which Dr. Mercola, I think it was, thinks are preferable to fish oil.
2) Get rid of Gluten, Grains and legumes, we are informed of what we must totally exclude from our diet. This turned out to include all food products (except fish) that I use as my source of protein:
Gluten (I have excluded this.)
All grains –wheat, rye, barley, rice, millet, and oats. Also corn and quinoa though they are technically not grains.
Legumes – lentils, chickpeas (i.e. also humus), peas, green beans, and red, white, black and kidney beans.

However, Amy explains that gluten-free is not an option either, since these products are loaded with sugar, salt, preservatives, additives and dyes.

We must also avoid nightshades i.e. eggplants (which I never eat anyway), potatoes, though sweet potatoes are okay (hurray!) and tomatoes.

Also, dairy products are out of bounds, e.g. milk, butter, cheese, goat's cheese, etc. Also eggs, my main source of protein other than fish. And nuts, peanut butter and seeds,

Amy's diet may be perfect for an inveterate carnivore, since you can eat all the organic meat you might desire, but for me it's inadequate. At least, at present, since I'm unable to get hold of the organic salmon fillets I usually eat. I can of course eat tinned sardines and anchovies, but I'm not keen on all the BPA you get to consume together with these fish.

3) Tame the toxins. There is good information here about getting rid of toxins, cleaning your air and water and buying clean body products. We are informed of the excellence of glutathione, which is “your body's biggest detoxifier”, but this has proved difficult for me to get so far,
4) Heal your infections. I didn't get much out of this chapter. I myself have to take considerable amounts of garlic every day to deal with interstitial cystitis, since my doctor can't/won't (both of these) help me.

Amy recommends a 30-day protocol. Avoid all foods she tells you to avoid for 30 days and see if your condition improves. This may well be a good idea, also for me, but I'm afraid I might feel quite weak and faint.

She offers many appetizing recipes. I might just try “Hearty Sweet Potato Mash” though I wouldn't have time to make it for breakfast, as she suggests.

The author is a doctor and she herself has an autoimmune disorder, so she needed to find a way to thrive with this ailment, and came up with this system, which she calls “The Myers Way”.

To sum up, the book does in fact contain much valuable information, and it may prove useful to many, particularly carnivores. But I won't go out of my way to recommend it, since I do not feel the author leaves us vegetarians with enough basic, nourishing foodstuffs to thrive on. But it is well-written and informative.

Full of Useful Information

This book contains good and useful information. Dr. Myers outlines a 30-day relatively easy to follow protocol designed to begin healing/reversing autoimmunity by eliminating inflammatory foods, detoxifying one's environment, and managing one's stress. Dr. Myers states that once the program is complete, one can begin reintroducing other foods. Some readers took offense to Dr. Myers eliminating sugar and honey and stating that a minimal amount of Stevia is okay. I agree with Dr. Myers. Sugars in any form are inflammatory and should be avoided while trying to heal. I do agree with some of the reviews that the addition of safflower oil is controversial. While the program eliminates dairy, a source of animal fat, it recommends, pork, beef, fish and chicken, which do contain these fats. Dr. Myers also clearly states that fermented foods while trying to reverse autoimmunity can be detrimental to the process and that these foods can be reintroduced after the 30-day protocol. This book does not only inform about autoimmunity in easily understandable terms, it also provides the practical how-to steps to begin reversing it. This protocol obviously worked for Dr. Myers and her patients, so it stands to reason that it will work for many others who are afflicted with an autoimmune disorder as well.

Very interesting read but author is now selling products

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is very interesting and informative. The author, Amy Myers, provides a list of supplements she recommends. The book is written in 2015, but now in 9/2019 the author is selling all her own brand name supplements. They are very expensive. I feel like the book was written with the intention to help people, but now it seems like the author is all about making more money off of her readers.

Great resource for anyone with autoimmune disease, inflammatory conditions, or chronic illness

As someone who has suffered from autoimmune disease (Crohn's) for almost 15 years, I have to say that this is a great, all-in-one "how-to" book. Dr. Myers provides a comprehensive look at autoimmune disease and in particular, how food and other toxic elements in our environment affect our immune system and set off inflammatory responses (and these responses can turn into autoimmune disease). She not only provides the science and explanations as to how the inflammation develops in the first place, but also practical suggestions for how to heal, reverse, and prevent it, including specific recipes and meal plans and suggestions for critical lifestyle changes. I especially love the fact that she is writing from the point of view of both medical doctor and patient (she has Graves' disease). This makes her perspective especially unique. I have already been following a Paleo diet (which in itself has been life-saving), but this book takes it a few steps further and gives a lot of suggestions that will help me take my healing even further. This is a must-read for anyone who already has autoimmune disease, or anyone dealing with inflammatory symptoms (headaches, skin conditions, joint pain, etc.).

Best Bloodwork In 10 years

What a blessing to have found this book. I'm horrible at following everything perfectly, but by making small changes one at a time and really thinking about living a healthier lifestyle I have made and can see the positive changes in my bloodwork. It's the best in 10 years! I'm more appreciative of Dr. Amy Myers than she may ever know. ❤️

MD Naturopath = Great Perspective

Well, I'm still grappling with the scope this book will have on my diet. I'm currently paleo. I moved to a paleo/ancestral type diet after some thyroid antibodies indicated I may have Graves, just like Amy, though I haven't officially been diagnosed. But, she's trying to take away a couple holdouts for me: eggs, nuts. Other than those two, I'm pretty much already on this autoimmune protocol - only because I've been on my own journey for over a year now.

But, she made me think about eggs. In paleo or ancestral eating, we go to great lengths to eat animals that have a natural diet- In the case of beef, lamb, etc - that they are 100% grass fed & finished. But, amazingly, this hasn't quite made it to chickens yet, despite all the fancy labels adorning the packages. I always buy the most blisteringly expensive eggs (usually Vital Farms in my area). But, did you know even if it's ORGANIC and NON-GMO, the chickens are still fed soy-based feed? Yuck! $7-8/dozen and really, you're getting a far inferior product and potentially reactive soy (estrogenic effects) compounds in the egg. I feel like in ancestral eating, eggs would certainly have been sought out and consumed in the wild, but think about and re-evaluate if modern chicken eggs are really high quality? Unfortunately, I have to agree with Amy that they may not be. I have no idea if she shares my opinion - just my opinion.

Thanks for making me think about this.

So, I'm quitting eggs Dr. Meyers. Later, if I can find a producer (I'm in San Antonio, TX) of eggs that are organic, gmo-free, soy-free and I know have plenty of room to eat bugs, snakes, grubs, and other naturally foraged foods in plenty... I will reconsider after my 30 days. I may even raise my own chickens - that would fun!

The book reads very quickly, and it's seems straight forward and clear. I first heard about Dr. Meyers in the paleo circles (Jonathan Bailor, Dave Asprey, Abel James) and her message is consistent (although more strict) with ancestral eating. I'm looking forward to taking it to the next level, and I'm so close to Austin, if I need to go further, she will be my 1st choice to visit. It's great to hear the perspective of an MD naturopath. That's pretty rare and awesome indeed.
