Description

"The author does a great job weaving in historical details of the whaling industry and the local culture of this New York seaport. The secondary characters are all great too. The history is interwoven seamlessly throughout the story and I loved all the characters. It's duel POV but that just made it better because the author gives us bits and pieces of Eli's and Remy's life, retrospectively. The plot had a few twists and turns I didn't expect and the ending was a complete surprise. The author even threw in a sweet romance, done beautifully, which just completed it for me." - N.N. Light, princess of the light Blog "The After House is a fantastic read. The author's use of vivid detail draws readers into the imaginative world he creates and the array of colorful characters give the story credibility. The author seamlessly switches from past to present allowing readers to discover the life of Captain Eli as well as what's keeping him stuck in the present. My heart ached for the unimaginable loss the Captain suffered and I longed for Remy to find the happiness she deserved. This is a beautiful story of second chances and a love as deep as the ocean." - Stacie "A feel good romance, a little scary with some great twist and turns along the way. The author is very good at bringing his characters to life for the reader." - Theresa "I think anyone who enjoys a good story, romance with a touch or paranormal will enjoy this one. I highly recommend it." - Kathy ""The After House" is an unexpected book. This is a case where you shouldn't "judge a book by it's cover". If you look a fast, easy to read and good written story that includes ghost, this one is a good choice.

After a failed marriage Remy buys an old house as a chance to rebuilt her life. What she doesn't know is that the house host a non-expected occupant.

The first chapters of the book are a quick summary of how Remy ended up where she is. It also includes a prologue that narrates the experiences of the captain of a whaling ship. This part of the book is good because it allows us to get into the story knowing all the facts. Despite the fast passing you get to understand the bigger picture. Now.. when the main story starts the rhythm settles up to the end when the action occurs really fast.

Remy is a hurt woman, which is understandable after everything she went through. She only wants to move on and raise her child. Olivia is a sweet kid, however you never know how old she is. I would have like to know her age. Eli, the captain, is an interesting character. Obviously he is ghost because he has some unfinished business. I like how protective he is and how easy he loses his temper.

The book also includes a sweet love story. It was a good addition and the author creates a pure, natural and lovely relationship.

There were minor issues that didn't work very well for me. One was the bad guy, his action seemed rushed and there aren't much explanation about why he acts the way he does. I understand that is not a long book so you need to find out who he behind the attacks and solve that problem but I needed more. Another thing, where the other two ghost, why were they there? Totally unnecessary.

Overall, if you look a fast, easy to read and good written story that includes ghost, this one is a good choice.

Really entertaining bgg

This is definitely one of my favorites from Cash!

I absolutely adored the dynamic between Eli and Olivia (and Remy). There's just something about a grumpy old man and a sassy little girl that really makes me love a story.

I thought the Remy-ex-husband thing was a little over-the-top but it ended up being balanced by the end of the book.

I really loved watching Eli come to himself and realize what he was missing - it was so sweet and heartwarming.

One thing that really disappointed me was the page length. I really fell for this story...and when it ended, I was so sad!

It was so good and I really wanted more of a plot and scenes with Eli just so I could spend more time within these pages.

Ahh well. That's a good problem to have.

Simple, feel good story

“The After House” by Michael Phillip Cash is a simple story that touches on the supernatural. It's a ghost story, but not a horror novel. I enjoyed it because Cash has a way of drawing you into simple stories through the characters. I liked the romance and how it developed, even if some might think it too “Mayberry.” But then maybe the story's setting, Cold Spring Harbor, is a bit like Mayberry. Well, if Mayberry had ghosts and maybe an angel or two watching over. It's a simple, feel good story.

Enjoyable

The story begins in 1840 with Captain Eli Gaspar and his crew aboard a whaling ship. While I’m not an advocate of whale hunting at all, the descriptions and historical details of the old time whalers was vividly portrayed. They got more than they bargained for while trying to harpoon a huge bull, as the whale destroyed the whaleboats, catapulting the sailors into the roiling sea, before attacking the ship itself, wrecking it and drowning all aboard….except for two. Quite sad really, as it seemed like the whale wanted revenge for the whalers killing its family.

Fast forward to present day and the historic port of Cold Springs Harbor on Long Island, where Remy Galway and her daughter, Olivia, rent a three hundred year old cottage after her marriage failed. The detailed descriptions of the cottage and the area were vivid and made it easy to picture. Remy’s parents had misgivings about her ex husband, Scott, from the first. They were proved right when Remy and Scott’s marriage ended after selfish, irresponsible and unfaithful Scott became physically abusive. The previous occupant of the tiny cottage was an artist who had painted a mural along one of the walls in the small parlor.

I was made aware of this book through participating in a blog tour later this month. (Look out for a guest post and giveaway from the author.) I love the atmospheric cover and the promise of supernatural and suspense drew me in. It’s an easy read, not at all scary despite the subject matter, and written with flashes of humour.

The present day chapters are interspersed with flashbacks from the whaling ship, which help to develop the story and Captain Eli’s character. Eli and Remy are both empathetic characters. She feels less than and lost since her divorce and is uneasy in the cottage, not realising why. Her daughter, on the other hand, knows and can see the confused ghost who can’t seem to leave the house that was once his. Guilt, anger and confusion are keeping Eli tethered to the place he called home. Both Eli and Remy are having to deal with consequences of choices made and need to heal enough to be able to move on.

The past and present are woven together well with engaging writing, a well crafted plot and interesting characters, some of whom could have had a little more depth. The two angel guides were favourites. The only real negative for me was the relationship between Remy and Hugh Matthews. The almost insta-love thing and their interactions weren’t entirely convincing. But it was a light, enjoyable read which could possibly be classed as a cozy ghost story (if there is such a genre.) I love the title being applicable to the past and present, as a place of refuge.

The After House is a well written and entertaining book

The After House is an entertaining novel by Michael Phillip Cash. An after house is the safe place in the back of a boat. It is a place where sailors can go for protection from the elements. I learned that spermaceti is a white waxy oily substance from a whale's head. This whale oil can be can used to make candles, cosmetics and to provide light. The setting of this book is Cold Spring Harbor, which is located in Long Island in New York. I would love to visit this place. I want to learn more about the whaling legacy of this community because of this book.

It is interesting how Michael Phillip Cash ties the different characters and story lines together. I found myself asking what kind of connection could be made between a divorced mother in the 21st century and the captain of a whaling boat in the 19th century. The single mother moves into a house that is haunted by the ghost of this whaling captain. There are some scary moments described in this book because of this premise, but I think the connection between these characters goes much deeper than that. The link between these two characters is that they both experience loneliness. These two characters are both searching for a sense of inner peace in their lives. I really like how Michael Phillip Cash develops this theme in this book.

Another good book from Michael

I recently finished reading the book, The After House, by Michael Phillip Cash. This is a book of love, loss of love, and situations that make you realize what you are actually capable of.

I loved how Michael wrote each character. Remy Galway and her daughter Olivia are rebuilding their life after a failed marriage in a 300 year old cottage in historic Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island. Little do they know, another occupant is lurking in the haven of their own home. Remy is having trouble dealing with her recent divorce, and moves into the cottage and strange things begin happening. Olivia thinks it is the spirit of Captain Eli Gaspar that is causing all the trouble, but they finally catch Remy's ex-husband causing all the problems.

Remy meets the town's mayor and museum director, Hugh, and they instantly fall in love. Hugh and Remy with the help of Georgia, who speaks to ghosts, help Captain Eli Gaspar to reconnect with his family and to cross over.

The story goes back and forth between the 1840's and 2014, telling the story of both Gaspar and Galway. It really gives a lot of information to understanding what is going on in the story.

Full Disclosure: I received this product for free for my honest opinion. I am not under any obligation to provide a positive or 5 star review. This is my honest opinion.

A pleasure to read

This was the first book of Michael Philip Cash that I have had the pleasure of reading, and it definitely will not be the last! The book had a very nice prologue before getting muddled down in the first chapter, blocks of text with no characters voice coming through had me fighting to get through this part but once you do the book turns into a fantastic story with a take on how ghosts interact with humans that is fairly unique amongst books that I have read in the past. I especially liked the time jumps between modern day and the mid-1800s that really made Captain Eli pop out as a character.

A Good Story With A Mix Of Love, Paranormal, Revenge and Redemption

This was an enjoyable read for me. I wasn't sure what to expect since I didn't know the meaning of the title, but it is engaging. I received a copy of The After House at no cost in order to review and I like the mix of real places with the fictional story. The characters are woven nicely into the location and it is an interesting mix as you get to see both Remy's and Captain Eli's lives and experiences from each of their respective points of view.

The story veers into the paranormal, but isn't terrible scary. It doesn't contain graphic violence so it's suitable for the younger crowd. There are a few moments of what is technically sexual content, but nothing graphic. Woven into the paranormal is the heart of the story and it's really a tale of love. The characters aren't incredibly deep, but this story really focuses on a moment in time for all of them with some background into what brought each of these people to that particular time and place.

Remy is a broken woman. Desolate and lost, but trying to be strong for her daughter and for her parents as well so they won't worry. Her guilt over her failed marriage eats at her while she tries to find her emotional footing while starting over and support herself and her daughter. At the same time Eli, the broken and bitter whaling ship Captain, is navigating his way through a fog that has hidden his memories. He is angry and doesn't remember why. His memories are on the cusp of his thoughts, but he just can't grasp them through the anger that has built up inside him. He initially takes out that anger on Remy, and neither understand why. When Hugh enters Remy's life (or is rather pushed in by Remy's mother), she thinks he is the last thing she needs. The strange occurances at their cottage by the sea escalate from annoying to creepy to deadly. As memories slowly emerge from his foggy mind, the Captain begins to understand what happened to the life he lost and the ones he loved.

These two stories are interwoven around a lovely small coastal town with real historical locations and touches. I would have liked to have seen some more detail and attention given to the characters, some depth and build to their personalities to create a more personal connection to them. I think a lot of people can relate to what this story encompasses on a surface level, but to go just a bit deeper would evoke emotion and passion for them as if they could walk out of the page. However, I liked the story and found it engaging. I wanted to keep reading and find out what happened next. And the descriptions of the town make me want to visit.

A unique and enjoyable take on a ghost story.

When I was the age of the young girl in this book, one of my favorite syndicated tv shows was The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Edward Mulhair portrayed the ghost of a salty sea captain haunting a hundred-year-old cape home shared by a widow and her children. It was loads of fun with a touch of impossible romance. Reading the description of this book, took me back to my childhood and I couldn’t wait to jump into it.

Despite the superficial resemblance to my childhood favorite, this was a unique and enjoyable take on a ghost story.

Remy Galway plans to buy the old long island home as a sign of her Independence after a long recovery from her divorce. With her parent's support she has slowly rebuilt her life and opened her own business. Now she is ready for her and her daughter to stand on their own. What she doesn’t know is that her home is haunted by a crusty whaling captain who is not amused by two females moving into his house, changing things. It doesn’t help that Olivia seems to be able to see him and isn’t at all frightened. His childish attempts to get them to leave is lost in the mystery of bad luck seemingly following Remy. Her home and business are vandalized and her car is run off the road. She doesn’t see any connection, however, she can’t shake the feeling that someone is watching her and when she begins to receive phone calls that don’t show up on her cell phone history she begins to doubt herself. Luckily Hugh, a friend of her mother’s, is there to help see her through the trouble.

This is the second book written by Mr. Cash that I have read and I continue to appreciate his writing style. His characters are larger than life and his story is exceptional. The historical aspect of the tale fits together beautifully with the modern-day story. While this story focuses on Remy and her newfound life, it is really about Captain Eli. I loved how Hugh, in his role as curator of the local maritime museum, holds the key that may give the Captain a chance to finish his tale.

I would appreciate longer books from this author, but I can honestly say this book was exactly as long as it needed to be and there were no loose ends or rushed storylines.
