Rape Culture

There was an astonishing amount of rape culture represented here and, to be completely honest I could not finish the book it was so prevalent. Tex (a ninth grader) wonders about whether his crush (a seventh grader) is wearing a bra or not and earlier on wonders when she started wearing one. Later on, (and this was really the last straw for me) she suggests that they go and get a coke. He drives her out into the middle of nowhere and begins to make out with her. Normally this would be alright, except for the fact that not only is this girl 12-13, she is also showing obvious signs of discomfort. While this is happening Tex says "She was wiggling in my arms like a landed bass; she got her hands on my chest and shoved" (157). Even after she tells him to stop he continues to make out with her until she physically shoves him off. Frankly, this sentiment has been present throughout the entire book and I am disgusted. Again, I did not make it through the entire book, so Hinton may have turned it around and made it into a lesson about how rape culture is horrible, but I will never know as the first half was just too disturbing to me.

This is a book that even a non reader will like.

I use books by S.E. Hinton to tutor reading. Kids who cannot read very well, do not like to read. These books are great for those kids. Middle school kids like these books. Even boys like them; don't tell them that SE stands for Susan Elizabeth! They assume it is a male author.

Very Happy Mom!

My purchase of S.E. Hinton's books have been one of my best purchases. My daughter is 16 and I could never get her to read. I was attending college during the start of her teenage years and she just wasn't interested in reading. Later a friend of mine in college suggested S.E. Hinton and how her writing would intrigue my daughter so I gave it a shot after a year and now my daughter has read all of S.E. Hinton's book and is continuing to read. I'm a very happy mom!

PS I wish she would write more books:)

TEX

Tex is a great guy, everyone likes him and has a good time with him. Trouble keeps find Tex, but he assists in that area. Left mostly on his own with his older brother, Mason, the boys fend for themselves, go to school, hang out with friends. Their Pop is working out of state and doesn't worry about them too much.

Life in Oklahoma is good for the boys save for the trouble that Tex keeps getting into. And the fact that there isn't much money left for food, clothes, bills. But Tex has a large group of friends and suddenly is confused by his feelings for Jamie Collins who has turned into a beauty over night.

Mason takes too much and full responsibility for his younger brother until Pop comes home. Then heads start to butt each other hard. Events take place, ugly truths are told, and everybody's life changes quickly.

I am a senior lady and have always known about S.E. Hinton, I just never stopped to read her books. Well, now I am reading them up faster than a toupee in a hurricane. I've read THE OUTSIDERS, THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW, RUMBLE FISH, and now TEX. All great books. All wonderful characters. All must reads.
