Description

From Publishers Weekly Sergio Mansour, the fifty-year-old hero of journalist Morrison’s well-paced debut, is a former Silicon Valley whiz kid who created Circles, a powerful social network that goes way beyond Facebook in its scope. He has left the company in the hands of the administrator team, but has stayed on at the San Francisco-based company to devote himself to research. He’s on the brink of perfecting a system that would guarantee online privacy. What could possibly go wrong? The answer, of course, is everything—including a murder, a missing thumb drive, Socialbots, and a murky business deal with China. Branded a terrorist and pursued by a hired killer, Sergio goes on the run. As the revelations start coming, thick and fast, he realizes that he must not only save himself but also his country. Morrison, who specializes in information technology, pithily explains all the techniques and data on which the plot depends without slowing down the action. Review An Amazon.com Best Books of the Month: Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Pick“Through its international conspiracy plots, Morrison’s fresh, immersive debut exposes the privacy dangers that lie in modern society’s commonplace relationship with social technology...This fast-paced technothriller will attract technophiles, Millennials, and fans of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series.” ― Library Journal “Scott Allan Morrison speeds through the synapses. Readers will continue to think about the issues raised long after finishing the book.” ―Jonathan Zittrain, co-founder of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University “ Terms of Use is dangerously suspenseful―you’ll have serious trouble putting it down.” ―Marty Cooper, “father” of the cell phone About the Author Scott Allan Morrison was a journalist for almost twenty years, covering politics, business, and technology in Mexico, Canada, and the United States. He later covered the Web 2.0 boom for Dow Jones Newswires and the Wall Street Journal . Over the course of a decade, Morrison covered most of the world’s top tech companies and chronicled many of Silicon Valley’s greatest stories, including the rise of Internet insecurity and the explosion of social media. Technology + Adventure = GOOD BOOK!

Business First: I was given an electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Terms of Use is a techo-thriller set in the US. The hero, Sergio, is wrongly accused of terrorism, theft and murder when he uncovers a plot to manipulate social media users at his place of employ.

The fast-paced novel was realistic enough (and I am a computer person) to make me analyze my use of social media sites. In this way, the story not only is a good read, but an educational one as well.

Terms of Use was well written. There was one point that I thought it might get preachy (a recount that President Obama encouraged the use of social media), but that was just one short paragraph and did not go any further. However, the entire book did have a message -- be aware of what you share on line!

Unlike some reviewers who seemed to think that this book was anti-Republican, I think it was just pointing out that people can be motivated by greed and power to do horrific things.

Definitely recommended for those who love technology and thrillers. This one has it all.

Okay read

The story was enough to hold my attention, with the alternative being watching TV I wasn't interested in. Overall it was okay, I could take it or leave it. Did the job of passing the time on a lazy day.

Quick, fun, cliffhanger!

Haven't had such a great easy read in awhile. Engaging and amazingly provocative of similar companies and personalities in the Bay Area. Congrats to the author on such a powerful first book!

An entertaining thriller!

A very entertaining thriller with some very interesting plot twists. Fast paced action and characters that have dimension and breadth. What is especially good is the plausibility of the central premise/mystery that drives the story line.

Compelling read that gnaws at you long after you put it down

Terms of Use is a great, fast paced thriller well placed in today's modern world dominated by social networking and debates about privacy. You don't need to be a software engineer to read and follow the book, just as you don't need to be an art historian to enjoy Dan Brown's "Da Vinci Code". And like any great fiction, the context and plot lines point out concerns that we should all take seriously - what's happening to the 10s of thousands gigabytes of data that we hand over to corporations and governments daily? Read Morrison's book and find out...

Very realistic and suspenseful! Fun read!

I love mystery novels but when a friend of a friend recommended this one to me, I was a bit skeptical. Being involved in the tech community in San Francisco, I was doubtful that the scene and the time would be captured in enough detail to feel authentic. I was completely wrong. Scott Allan Morrison must have spent an enormous amount of time researching the tech community in Silicon Valley (or must be very familiar with it himself from his past work), because it was very accurate and well done. The characters were very realistic and even the political tie ins seemed completely plausible. The story itself was extremely engaging and suspenseful. I read the entire book in two sittings because I couldn't put it down! Highly recommended! In fact, I've already purchased copies for a couple of my friends who are into tech and mystery novels as well.
