Description

From Publishers Weekly With Romanowski, coauthor of Vanna Speaks , Williams, founder of the Temptations, a blues group that sang its way to the top of the charts in the 1960s, tells a vivid story of good times and bad: Motown's super group has been plagued by violent quarrels, drug and alcohol abuse, suicide. The Temptations have often been on the verge of falling apart, but Williams, according to the authors, has always been able to pull them together again, even to pick up the pieces of their troubled relationship with Motown founder Berry Gordy. Among other tidbits, the book provides illuminating insights into the famous "Motown U," where singers were instructed in charm and deportment as well as musical skills. The group is still going strong, though membership has changed over the years, and Williams writes as a man who is proud of having kept it alive for so long. Photos not seen by PW. Classic Temptation Fan

Read the book, saw the movie. Otis has memories that have probably been clouded with the passage of time. I do remember watching Eddie and Dennis Edwards on Donny Simpson's BET show a number of years ago shortly after Otis' book was first published. Donny asked Eddie about Otis' memories of Paul's spirit visiting him one night and the subsequent discussion Otis had with Eddie regarding Paul's spirit. Not only had Eddie not read the book, Eddie said the conversation with Otis never took place. If Paul's spirit was to have visited anyone, it would have been Eddie given that they had been best friends since childhood and Eddie named his son after Paul. Just food for thought.

Well worth the wait

It took almost a year for me to find a copy of this rare book and I am truly happy that I was blessed to receive it. I spent (2)times the original purchase price and I don't regret spending one extra dime on this excellent and moving book. Otis is a true gentleman. He named names when appropriate and left names out when not. I never felt cheated on information and the descriptions were so vivid, that it often felt as if I was right there. I also noticed there were some twists from the television movie. For those trying to find a copy of this book continue to check used book stores. As for me I will keep this book as a collector's item forever.

What really happened to Eddie Kendricks?

I enjoyed the 1998 movie of "The Temptations". I grew up in the 60's therefore not really into R&B at that time, but now, I appreciate the music so much that I feel each member really put alot of effort into making the group a success. Aside from the downfalls that the group suffered, I would like to know what really happened to Eddie Kendricks. From the tabloids to rumors Eddie died from a drug overdose. The character (Terron) who played Eddie mostly had a cigarette in his hand if you noticed and it was also mentioned in the movie that it was lung cancer that caught Eddie - so I am confused as to Eddie's death. I was disappointed as to why Eddie and David did not have a funeral in the movie. I most of all enjoyed Eddie's music as I was growing up in the 70's and I miss him dearly. I would like to write to the character who portrayed Eddie and let him know that his character was played to perfection and that he does have some identical features like Eddie. May God bless the familes of the Temptations who have lost their love ones.

The Temptations

I too have not read the book just yet. I am trying to obtain a copy, because I am SO IN LOVE with the movie. I just know the book has some additional information. I have seen the movie at least 15-20 times. I have it on VHS and DVD (for my portable DVD player when traveling). I just love to sing along with the songs during the movie and on the radio. I can see from the movie, that they were really JUMPING. Unfortunately, I was very young when the original Temptations were hot and did not get a chance to see them perform.
I wish the movie could've touched on more of the other members. I would love to know more about Melvin Franklin, David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks. Did either of them ever marry? As for David, I see in the movie, it touched on David being a little rough with Tammie Terrell. I know it was rumored that he had something to do with her death, but her death wasn't mentioned at all. I wish it had been.
The movie was great from the very beginnning. ALL the characters did an EXCELLENT JOB. However, I think some interesting information was missing towards the end of the movie because of the length. I could have watched another hour or so of that movie.
The movie was GREAT! I am sure the book is even better. Now, I just have to find myself a copy.

Generations of Love for the Temps

First let me say that I have not read the book, but it is only because I have not found it yet. The movie is fantastic and we have enjoyed 100's of hours of song and fun watching it, so the book has to be awesome. I am just under 50 and I grew up with the music of the Temps in the "hood" of the south. It is a testament to the awesomeness of the Temptations, because my children also have fallen in love with the Temptations. My 26 yr. old collects every Temp CD available, my daughter (27) has fallen in love with Paul (the movie star) along with one of my sisters and 2 of my neices.
My family was introduced to this movie after the funeral of my 18 yr. old nephew and I must say that it was a God-send. It allowed for a breath of fresh air, laughter, fun, music and even tears. At my mother's 76th birthday celebration instead of singing Happy Birthday to her, the KIDS all sang..."My Girl" to her. This movie has brought many, many hours of happiness into the lives of everyone in this family and we only wish we had copies of the book now. I cherish the memory of enjoying the Tempations Reunion Tour in Memphis, TN, and I can share that with my children as we watch the movie, but there are things that only the book can bring to their hunger for information. My hats off to Otis for his open and honest portrayal of one of the world's greatest R&B groups ever... The Tempations. This movie like the group, will never die.

A little disappointing

Like so many who saw the television drama: The Temptations, this book only covered a certain segment in the life of the Temps, which is not the fault of the author. However, the book did give a window into the world of Motown and a perspective of what it was like for the young artist of that area.

It was okay.

I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE CHARACTERS BECASUE THEY WERE SO REAL. I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT THE BOOK IS OUT OF PRINT. I WAS ON A SPECIAL LIST AT THE LIBRARY BUT THAT WAS A YEAR AGO AND STILL NO BOOK. I DO HOPE THAT THE BOOK CAN BE PRINTED AGAIN BECAUSE THERE WAS SO MUCH LEFT OUT OF THE MOVIE THAT I WANT TO KNOW. I TOO WAS UPSET BECASUE THEY DID NOT HAVE A FUNERAL FOR DAVID AND EDDIE. ANYHOW, THE MOVIE WAS GREAT AND I KNOW THE BOOK IS TOO.

I LOVE IT!

I really loved Otis' point of view of the Temps. I found it to be a page turner and once I got it I could not put it down until I was finish. Keep in mind though that this book is OTIS' VIEW of the temps before you start judging it. It starts off with Otis telling his beginning years of singing, but ultimately it IS about the temps. I would remind you that this book was published in 1988, only Paul Williams was decreased by this time. If you want to know more about the deaths of Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin and Melvin Franklin then please DON'T buy this one, instead buy the TEMPTATIONS: UPDATED EDITION also written by Otis Williams with an additional chapter.
I read this book 4 times and currently reading it again. LOVE IT.
Hope this helps.

P.S: My book came in PERFECT condition highly impressed being that it was my first book I purchased by Amazon.
