Description

“This beautifully photographed, comprehensive work of Claiborne’s cuisine deserves to be a part of your everyday repertoire.” —VegNews " Sweet Potato Soul starts with anxa0Erykah Baduxa0quote and ends with a recipe for pecan muhammara. Clearly, there’s a lot to love. The debut cookbook from belovedxa0vegan food bloggerxa0Jenné Claiborne, Sweet Potato Soul offers vegan twists on soul food classics alongside memories of Claiborne flipping fluffy pancakes to the sound of gospel music in her Nana’s kitchen. Fittingly, a wonderfully comprehensive section on southern pantry staples devotes almost 6 full pages to sweet potatoes varietals. What looks good:xa0Fluffy sweet potato biscuits, coconut collard salad, “Harlem caviar” black eyed pea salad, Creole red bean sausages, and jackfruit jambalaya." —Bon Appetit "Many traditional dishes are off-limits to a vegetarian or vegan, but the smart use of spices and other ingredients can bring them back within reach. This is just what Jenné Claiborne does so beautifully in her new book, Sweet Potato Soul. Claiborne brings Southern flair . . . to plant-based dishes. That means shredded sweet potatoes and pecans in her granola, coconut three ways (oil, milk and sugar) in her peach cobbler and oyster mushrooms in her étouffée. . . . I knew it was the real deal when my fiance, whose people come from Louisiana, took one bite and put down his spoon—so he could take a photo." —Washington Post "Jenné makes a vegan lifestyle look easy —not to mention totally delicious. Her tips and recipe roundups are super-practical for vegans and non-vegans alike." —Rachael Ray Every Day "One potato, two potato, give me all your sweet potatoes!! Jenne has crafted the best soul satisfying comfort vegan recipes." — Chloe Coscarelli, author of Chloe Flavor and Chloe's Kitchen "We’ve all been waiting for this! Jenné Claiborne's Sweet Potato Soul cookbook is an absolute dream for anyone craving Southern flavors and soul food classics. Hearty, inviting, and always delicious, Jenné’s recipes prove time and time again that stick-to-your-ribs eating can be completely plant-based!" — Sarah Britton, Holisitic Nutritionist and founder of My New Roots "Jenné has done an incredible job of compiling all of her favorite vegan soul food classics in this stunning cookbook. Vegans and those curious about plant-based eating will love the beautiful images, recipes, and thoughtful narrative in this book. I can't wait to dig in (especially to Nana's Sweet Potato Pie)!" — Dana Shultz, author of Minimalist Baker's Everyday Cooking Jenne Claiborne is a NYC-based vegan personal chef, cooking instructor, and the blogger behind Sweet Potato Soul, with over 200,000 followers on social media. Features & Highlights

  • 100 vegan recipes that riff on Southern cooking in surprising and delicious ways, beautifully illustrated with full-color photography.
  • Jenné Claiborne grew up in Atlanta eating classic Soul Food—fluffy biscuits, smoky sausage, Nana's sweet potato pie—but thought she'd have to give all that up when she went vegan. As a chef, she instead spent years tweaking and experimenting to infuse plant-based, life-giving, glow-worthy foods with the flavor and depth that feeds the soul.  In
  • Sweet Potato Soul
  • , Jenné revives the long tradition of using fresh, local ingredients creatively in dishes like Coconut Collard Salad and Fried Cauliflower Chicken. She improvises new flavors in Peach Date BBQ Jackfruit Sliders and Sweet Potato-Tahini Cookies. She celebrates the plant-based roots of the cuisine in Bootylicious Gumbo and savory-sweet Georgia Watermelon & Peach Salad. And she updates classics with Jalapeño Hush Puppies, and her favorite, Sweet Potato Cinnamon Rolls. Along the way, Jenné explores the narratives surrounding iconic and beloved soul food recipes, as well as their innate nutritional benefits—you've heard that dandelion, mustard, and turnip greens, okra, and black eyed peas are nutrition superstars, but here's how to make them super tasty, too.  From decadent pound cakes and ginger-kissed fruit cobblers to smokey collard greens, amazing crabcakes and the most comforting sweet potato pie you'll ever taste, these better-than-the-original takes on crave-worthy dishes are good for your health, heart, and soul.

Delicious recipes for a non-Vegan

Yes, I eat animal products, but on the days that I designate as "V" days, usually 2 or 3 per week, this book is filled with wonderful recipes that don't use any animal products; I'm slowly trying to adopt a totally vegan diet and this cookbook will certainly help me on my journey.

DISSAPOINTED IN THIS COOK BOOK

I am very dissapointed with this book. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND BUY IT. I ordered 2, one for a gift. I quickly breezed through my book and thought, huh, hardly any viable photos. It was late so I figured take a look at it the next day, maybe I am just too tired to pay attention. I picked it up a couple of days later and again the issue with photos. I really wanted to give the book a go. A few days later I wanted to start reading the ingredients, but I noticed ;; the first 40 pages was about the history of fruits and foods. A waste. Then I noticed that there were photos of fruit, half eaten meals and meals that a child could prepare. Then I noticed the ingredients were close to non existent. I am so DISSAPOINTED in this book because she gives us so much love with her Youtube ingredients. The book seems as though it was a quick put together with very little thought in preparing fulfilling meals. I took it as though she did not care enough about her followers to give us a good hearty cook book. I hope that if SweetPotatoSoul puts out another cook book that she will add SUBSTANCE to the cook book. Until then I will not buy another cook book from her.

Good recipes but not all "whole foods" (ie. vegan mayo, vegan cheese)

I was very excited to get this cookbook however I was a little disappointed that they recipes use so many processed vegan items. For example, several of the recipes call for "vegan mayo" or "vegan cheese" etc. That being said, it might be great for those who are new to the vegan diet or are just "vegan curious". I still look forward to trying many of the recipes though as the pictures make them look irresistible!

Delicious southern soul classics gone vegan :-)

This book is beautiful! It's filled with Jenne's energy, passion, and compassion and it is motivating me to get in the kitchen and explore Southern cuisine (not my natural habitat). :-) It has lots of sweet potato-based recipes along with other classics using peaches, pecans, and so much more. Although there is a lot of oil for some of the fried foods most of the recipes are pretty healthy veganized versions. Great job Jenne!

Flavorful, comforting, and not fussy

Jenne is just fantastic. I've been following her vlogs for years and already had an idea of what to expect from this cookbook. One of my all time favorite recipes is included-the Coconut Corn Chowder. That is the perfect bowl of summer flavors for me. I've also tried her Skillet Cornbread and Tender Mess o' Collards. The cornbread has such a nice texture and this greens recipe has finally taught me how to make greens taste great (I love plants but usually hide my greens within meals because they aren't my fav). Right now I'm enjoying the Cure-All Lentil Soup. It is just so comforting and flavorful (mmm the fennel!) and will be in regular rotation for me with crusty bread on the side or fluffy rice. I can't wait to work my way through this book.

The recipes aren't fussy and do not need 5 other recipes prepped first to make the main dish making them great for busy folks. So many wonderful whole foods are used and I love that Jenne is not afraid of herbs and spices.

I also love all the food history in this book! I read it front to back to learn more about soul food.

Great cookbook!

This is as good as I had hoped it would be! I’ve used this cookbook every night since I received it and I haven’t been disappointed with anything I’ve made. In particular, the sweet potato burgers (with red pepper aoli and pickled onions, as described in the recipe) are to die for! Tonight is red beans and rice with homemade sausages...yum yum!

Excellent first cookbook for a new vegan

This is a great cookbook to start with as a new vegan! Recipes are so easy and delicious! I have no problem finding all the ingredients at my local grocery store. Haven’t encountered a recipe in this cookbook yet that I don’t truly enjoy. It may take a while, but I’m determined to get through the entire cookbook and make ALL one hundred recipes eventually. 😊

"Sweet Potato Soul" is not only a beautiful book on the outside

I am so hungry! "Sweet Potato Soul" is not only a beautiful book on the outside, it is high quality through and through. The professional photographs are so artfully shot, they are literally mouth-watering. I love how the recipes are laid out on the page: list of ingredients at the top right, historical info about the recipe on the left, and clearly written instructions in the lower right. Sometimes a scrumptious photograph of the finished product is on the opposite page. This is a personal book. Jenné's energetic and talented personality shines through.

And the recipes are vegan soul food!!!

Awesome job Jenné!!! I shall buy more books for family gifts.

Yum Yum To My Tum Tum

Okay...I’m a baby Vegan. Actually, I’m more of a flexitarian at this point. But, I’m trying to get there. I’ve made two recipes from this cookbook so far. I didn’t adjust anything because I wanted to taste the food the way she meant it to taste. Let me tell you...I did not miss the meat and these recipes are ready to go AS IS. The Pan Fried Butter Beans and Greens was absolutely DELICIOUS! This cookbook is well worth it. Buy whether you’re a vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian, flexitarian, or meat lover. You will not regret it.
