Up-to-date text written in plain language

I use this as a text and training book for my group. The information in it, is not just for moms, but being written with that slant, it appeals to the women of the group much more than the macho, special forces type books others use.

Lisa Bedford Defines Superwoman

Watch out Survival World, there's a new queen in town and she's done her homework!

Lisa's fresh approach to restoring peace and order in every mothers household is literally a breath of fresh air. Clearly she's done her homework throughout her years of guiding people on her blog and she's cleverly brought her strategies and sensibilities to life with a dash of fun and a whole lot of confidence.

As a preparedness consultant and professional speaker on these matters, I'd be honored to share the stage with her any day. She brings a fresh new voice that breaks away from the decades of "this is how it's always been done" mentality and she does it with style and an undeterred level of conviction and plenty of experience. Yup, this is one mom you can listen to and rely upon when it comes to taking care of your family in any one of the potential curve balls that life is apt to throw at you.

Overall, a pretty good book

This is a good book for soft-core emergency preparation. The sections about food storage and preparation is very good. I especially liked the Top Ten Foods to Store. The book covers some topics not addressed in other similar books, like having a Wonder Wash to do laundry and preparations for children and babies. It discusses feminine issues. I shielded my eyes and quickly turned past those pages.

One of the weaknesses of the book was the discussion of general sanitation. I was surprised Bedford only discusses the old-school bucket as a toilet. The modern chemical toilets are so much more hygienic and better. I think most people (even survival-oriented people) don't really believe their sewer system (or septic system) will ever become unavailable.

Even before the bucket, an alternative solution is the standard emergency method of using garbage bags to line a regular toilet. Then seal them with a bit of disinfectant to cut the stink. You shouldn't pooh-pooh the subject of sanitation.

One section I liked (page 193) talks about safety lessons for kids. How should a child who is home alone answer a knock on the door? If you don't answer, a burglar might think nobody's home. Bedford offers a clever response of saying dad's asleep and I don't want to wake him.

Another great idea from Bedford: Put together a pet evacuation kit. She includes things like a small litter box for a cat. I think her inclusion of small details like this make the book worthwhile.

Will most "survival moms" be able to survive the most adverse physical circumstances? Probably not. Bedford freely admits she'd struggle to change the tire on her Tahoe (page 247). But "survival moms" can take many steps to see their families are better prepared.

... to my husbands military service this book is a wonderful preparedness manual

As a busy mother of 7 children who at times is a solo parent due to my husbands military service this book is a wonderful preparedness manual. It helps you get started, keeps you on task, reminders of things you might not of thought of. Great book to have on hand and to keep around to reference back to when situations arise.

KP

Excellent book, makes sense to be ready for any crisis, not necessarily the end of the world. Great worksheets to get your pantry organized and keep kids busy. Helps a mother feel better about taking care of her kids and loved ones and keep things as normal as possible even with power out, ice storm, severe storms, or long trips.

Valuable Information for Any Mom!

After reading the reviews, I was really excited to get my copy of Survival Mom. The author was upfront about some of the topics being a tad overwhelming, especially for the newby SM. So going in, I knew what to expect. I was blown away by how well organized and informative this book is! Instead of feeling discouraged that I was so far behind in all of my SM skills, I felt empowered and motivated to begin my journey to keep my family(AND myself) safe!

I became so rabid for more information that I subscribed to Lisa's blog and am now revamping my To Do, To Learn and To Buy lists because I've already checked off several items.

If Lisa Beford compiles enough follow up information to write another book, I'm buying!

Just what I needed

Just like the author, I have been reading these prep books written by men that are good, but a little militant. I, as a mom, am approaching this survival thing with a totally different perspective. The author gets it just right! She gives the information I, as a mom, need in my role as mama bear. Suggestions like try the Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) before stocking up on them to see what your family will like best. She gives helpful suggestions to where to start with food storage and which of your family's favorites can be storagized-made into meals that can be prepared from storage food items that may be dehydrated, freeze dried, canned etc....I have already given this book to my closest friends.

Ready for Everything

I first picked this up at the public library and then after reading it cover to cover purchased my own copy. I am also one of Lisa's fans on Facebook and visit her blog for reference frequently. Shortly after following her advice and stocking up my week's worth of water, food and supplies Superstorm Sandy rolled toward NC. My sister sent me an e-mail: "Take care, and I know you are well prepared." We were missed by the storm. No one expected things to be so bad North of us. Everyone needs to be prepared before the next one comes. Her perspective is a mom's point of view and its PRICELESS!!! There were many things I THOUGHT I was doing right. Now thanks to Survival Mom I really have it right!
