Description

From Booklist “Captain” Dwight and Origami Yoda return to McQuarrie Middle School just in time to wage battle against a powerful new enemy in Angleberger’s latest installment of this popular series. After a poor showing on the state standardized tests, McQuarrie students learn that their favorite classes—art, choir, sports, LEGOs—are being replaced by FunTime, a learning enhancement program that proves to be anything but fun. With Origami Yoda at the helm, an Origami Alliance forms to launch a rebellion against FunTime in order to save the school and its students from the Dark Side. Angleberger delivers another clever, funny crowd-pleaser in a diary-style case file packed with doodles and the voices of key participants in the rebellion. The message isn’t bad either: uniting for the greater good and standing up for one’s beliefs. Fans of the series, or of Star Wars, will hit warp speeds to grab a copy of this one. Grades 3-6. --Julia Smith "Chock-full of customarily quirky fun." ― Kirkus Reviews "Fans of the series will relish the side drawings' goofy humor, the new puppets to make, and the cliff-hanger promising more to come." ― School Library Journal "Angleberger delivers another clever, funny crowd-pleaser. The message isn't bad either: uniting for the greater good and standing up for one's beliefs. Fans of the series, or of Star Wars, will hit warp speeds to grab a copy of this one." ― Booklist Tom Angleberger is the New York Times bestselling author of the Origami Yoda series and the Flytrap Files series, as well as many other books for kids. He lives with his family in Virginia. Heather Fox is an illustrator of stories for children. When she isn’t creating, she’s probably drinking a hot cup of coffee, eating Chinese food, or chasing down her dog (Sir Hugo) who has stolen one of her socks. She lives in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, with her husband (and author!), Jonathan Stutzman. Read more

  • bestselling Origami Yoda series from Tom Angleberger!
  • Some problems are too big for Origami Yoda alone . . .   This semester, Dwight, Tommy, Sara, and the gang must face their deadliest enemy yet: The FunTime Education System. Meant to raise standardized test scores, the mind-numbing videos of Professor FunTime and his singing calculator are driving everybody crazy! And worse yet, to make time for FunTime, all electives—drama, art, band—have been canceled!   Naturally, the kids turn to Origami Yoda for help, but he tells them that this enemy is too strong for him to fight alone. If they want to get their favorite classes back, they must form a Rebel Alliance. Soon dozens of kids, each with his or her own origami puppet, join the Alliance. But will the Force be with them—or will they be defeated by the FunTime Menace?   Includes instructions for origami Jabba and Ewok.

OFFENSIVE RELIGIOUS OPINIONS

MY 10 YEARD OLD SON LOVES THESE BOOKS. WE ARE NOT A RELIGIOUS FAMILY. AND WE PROBABLY ALIGN WELL WITH THE SECULAR VIEWS OF THE AUTHOR.

HOWEVER I WAS REALLY SURPRISED WHEN MY SON POINTED OUT A PASSAGE IN THE BOOK THAT WAS EXTREMELY INSULTING TO RELIGIOUS CHRISTIANS.

ON PAGE 189 MIKE'S MOM STATES "THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEY DON'T LET YOU PRAY IN SCHOOL" THERE IS ALSO A CRITICAL REFERENCE TO VEGGIETALES, A SERIES OF BIBLICAL SHOWS FOR KIDS.

I DO NOT WANT MY SON TO THINK ITS OKAY TO INSULT THOSE WHO ARE DEEPLY RELIGIOUS. THIS BOOK MAKES IT SEEM OKAY.

Another gem in the Origami Yoda series

My nine year old son is not much of a reader a lot of the time, but he has devoured every book in the origami Yoda series. We pre-ordered this one and it was delivered some time when I was at work. By the time I came home in hue he evening, my son was half way through. This series is clever, delightful, and compassionate. I wish there were more books like this for kids of all ages.

The Rebellion Begins

This review is from my son Daniel. Jabba the puppet is the fifth book in the Origami Yoda series, and it's the best one so far. It tells you how to make origami Jabba and origami ewok. It is about these kids Tommy, Dwight, lance, Harvey, Kellen, Sara, Quanando,Amy, and Mike who are starting an origami rebellion against this thing called Funtime. Funtime are these three minute clips that are kind of like Dora the Explorer only it's meant for middle-schoolers and they don't teach you anything. The kids have a plan to stop funtime by purposely failing this test so that it will seem like funtime didn't help at all (which it didn't). Then they found out that if they failed the test the wouldn't graduate. Will they get help from origami Yoda? Or will there be a surprise attack from someone else?

Even Jabba has a sense of Humor - Great for Creative Star Wars fans

I bought this book for my son who absolutely loves origami and Star Wars. This book is full of humorous approaches to origami projects featuring the Star Wars theme. After reading this, you'll never fear Jabba again. My son will sit down for hours reading through the book and creating the many origami projects. He and his friend love working on them together.
A very entertaining book for the creative Star Wars fan of any age!

(Spoiler alert) Kudos for stirring up kid's creativityp

Note: we haven't finished the whole book yet. I think my teenage son would give this book a 5 and I would too except for a few words that I find offensive. I know that s***ks is common use, but I don't like it. However, one of the boys in the story doesn't like it either (comments on the lack of creativity of most people who use the word) and decides to make up a new word to replace it. Kudos for Angleberger's creativity in that situation and his work in general! I do love the way his books get kids creating: making origami, drawing & writing. I'll give him 5 stars for that and a hug if I ever meet him.

Hard getting through this book!

My 11 year old son chose this as the book he reads for school. He has a test coming up on it so he just finish it. He is on page 70 and new characters are still being introduced. There are so many characters without any significant character development it's hard to tell them apart. The humor is not funny to us at all but we typically love books like the Wimpy Kid series. I don't understand how this series could be so popular. Maybe he needed to read the first one first?

Funny graphic novel for middle grades!

Silly, but not overly so. Any Star Wars fan will really like this parody series, which captures many of the "inside jokes" of the movie series. Graphic novel / chapter book combinations are all the rage right now, and this series is hot amongst 9-12 year olds!

Sneaked it in house and wrapped before son could find it

Son wanted this very badly. He has been reading the series since we found book 1. He started reading these late because he was already 8 when he began the first one.

Jabba was a great addition. He loved it and the series. He has made us puppets and origami over and over.
Pros:
Easy reading for most ages that can read alone.
Great story
Don't have to be a Star Wars fan to love it (but if you are not an Original Star Wars fan you should be ashamed)
Really stimulated him not to just read but then create the puppets and draw more. This series has helped his artistic see come out
Not just for Boy's. My girl is too young but loves looking at the pictures.

Cons:
Afraid that the series will end.
