Not Simplifying Construction, but Multiplying Opportunities for Inaccuracy
Every time you cut out a piece and sew it with another there is an opportunity for inaccuracy in cutting, sewing and pressing. By trying to eliminate Y-seams she is instead forcing you to sew MANY MANY other seams which multiplies opportunities to sew inaccurately. This method also interrupts your fabric's print which is important when you are trying for a 3D effect. It also means you have many more intersections to sew through and you may not get smooth lines. In my 55+ years of quiltmaking I've seen many attempts to avoid Y-seams and this one is worse than most.

Lack of instructions
This book is lacking in instructions. It’s a completely triangle quilt which I didn’t know. It doesn’t make any sense why I would have to sew 10 triangles together all of the same color to make a strip that than you attach to another strip made up of 8 triangles also sewn together. I don’t know where the simplified part of this book is. I love the patterns but too cumbersome and not enough instructions. It’s a shame because Ms. Berrys Bargello quilt books are excellent and I have made many bargello quilts with those books. I however am going to have to reinvent the wheel and come up with patterns to do this quilt but I’m not sewing more than 800 individual triangles for anyone. Sorry this is no bueno at least for me.

How to figure out the pattern
I went crazy at first because the colors on the design chart don’t match the sample picture of the quilt. I assume this is because of the colors selected for printing so I made a color copy of the design chart. I then wrote a legend on the left column for the colors such as the three shades of yellow are 1, 2, 3, blue is 4, 5, 6 etc. I then went to my printed copy and wrote the numbers in the first column to match the pictures of the quilt. As I’m getting further in the quilt, I have added more numbers as needed, or referred to my legend.
When I’m doing a column, l start at the bottom of a row, and create a pile of the fabric squares needed, then when I start sewing the column, I start at the top, and check the chart to make sure I’m doing the right colors as I sew and have found I’d made mistakes collecting the colors but I caught my mistakes right away.
Hope this helps, it’s not a quilt for beginners, I’m only on the 6th row. I can’t believe I picked this design, but I also can’t wait to do another.

Not what I expected.
This book is filled with small projects. Not actual full sized quilts. I expected it to be full sized quilts. Not table runners or wall hangings, etc. What is included is nice but think the title is somewhat misleading.

Many Errors in the first pattern we tried
This book is fun to look at and the patterns are very interesting.
The instructions and sewing tips are very good, too.
However, we didn't discover the errors in our first chosen project until about half way through.
The shades on the detail with all 980 triangles are incorrect in at least three places, meaning
that difficult repairs had to be made to properly finish the design.

Requires a lot of cutting and sewing
Author presents an interesting concept. However, projects will require more time and precision sewing than other methods of constructing these quilts. Liked that she presented different color ways and quilt sizes for the patterns.

WOW !!!
What an amazing book !! The charts in the book, a mini design wall if you will really help show how to put these projects together. Helps to take the mystery out of making a 3d effect project. Yes there are many many many pieces of fabric to be sewn for each column, and many at times of the same color. If the author had perhaps said cut a length of fabric x length for a certain space in the column instead of cut x amount of blocks of the same color then sew them together that would save some time. That's my only quibble.

Excellent
I have purchased at least 20 quilting books in the last year. This is far and away, the best of the lot. Clear, precise and easy instruction. There are no humorous little quips, that I find oh so distracting. Just good, clear instructions. I will buy any quilting book this author writes.

Stunning 3-D Quilts Simplified by Ruth Ann Berry
Love this book... The book makes a 3-D pattern and look harder than it looks. In fact it is easier than you think. All 12-patterns are beautiful and the directions are easy to follow.

Easy to follow but not for beginners
I’ve been wanting to do a cool 3d design quilt for my grandson. Found this book and decided to get it. I’ve done simple 3d quilts in the past. The quilt I chose turned out to have mistakes in the total numbers of pieces listed on the directions so I’d urge you to double check or have a little extra fabric in case you need to cut more. I’ve recently had surgery and am not able to sew for several more days but there is a lot of ironing seams I can do. One tip I would give is to mark each triangle with a number as it’s easy to get off track and also if you batch sew, work on one row at a time, adding rows together as you finish them. I plan on making several more from this book in the next year but need to finish this one for Christmas
