Good enough to buy the rest of the series…

An interesting take on quasi-historical fantasyland, where nearly anything and everything within the author’s imaginative fancy is possible. In the audio version the storyline moves speedily enough that the general lack of action on the ground, other than a lengthy horseback ride, is not a severe hindrance. The audio version is respectable, although I can’t see me staying awake through the printed version and I was struck that the early character introductions sounded a bit like they were the product of a committee.

It took me a bit to realize that the burdensome characters first particularized in some detail were not the ones the author was going to concentrate on, and although I was thankful to lose them, the shifting of gears threw me for a while. Nonetheless, the story comes round and begins to connect the dots – eventually the distressed, uninspired characters seem to drift into their gloom and something of a hero emerges… part of my misunderstanding is that this genre is relatively new to me (seems like science fiction, only in eons past), but the story is inventive and novel enough that I ordered the next two in the series just to see where this all ends up -- that will have to serve as tangible evidence of my endorsement.
