Wow...

They just need to keep Una on retainer to write all of their books for them. This is the best one so far. She got Tilly down perfectly. Absolutely amazing! I read it in less than 2 days, I loved it. I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

an emotional journey of amazing quality

(note - for once, i bought the paperback, not audible, even though i have terrible eyes. I was VERY relieved to find out the book had both a respectably readable font and decent line spacing - i can read any book still, but many give me headaches. the quality of the paperback edition is Excellent)

I wish I had the time to write a gigantic review for this book - it is 5 star for more than one reason.

I picked it up thinking it would be "light reading", sort of pulpy star trek pew pew Tilly saves the day. I adore Tilly on the show, and this writer comes highly reviewed, so bring on the mind candy.

This book is not pulpy mind-candy. It is a "legitimate" (yes i am cringing as well as I use that descriptor), deep, well-written book about the process of growth and personal discovery of a teenager transitioning into adulthood. The fact it happens to be a character from a TV show does not reduce its power, or the depth of the surrounding cast of characters, or the difficulty of the decisions facing our protagonist. And her reactions to them are all credible and believable, and we grow with her. Her name happens to be Tilly, but thats not really important to the wonderful enjoyment this author brought to the table.

Huge huge huge recommendation. I will admit, some of the tension and conflict the author sets up between mother and daughter, mother and father, and father and daughter, is intense! While every page was immensely enjoyable and well-written, this is not all light fare emotionally.

Which, of course, is what makes it so believable.

Beyond incredible

Read the book in one sitting and wow - the author captures Tilly's personality, mannerisms, thoughts and more in such a way, you could *hear* Tilly in your mind while reading the story.

I also enjoyed the humanity the author brought to her mother as well; we've all known such DragonParents in our past, I think. The last conversation, however, was just so *on point* - the narcissist personality of the mom outweighed mother love and made it impossible for her NOT to make every discussion *about* her (and not Tilly).

Truly a gem (and I will have to look up the DS9 books this author has written as well!). Highly recommended!

No space battles or wars or morals or mirrored contemporary issues. But all heart and all wonderful.

Despite being unlike many other Trek books - and I have read many many many of them - this is one of the best written, best narrated (audiobook version), best backstories. The author really captured Tilly's character and what she may have been like and lived like leading up to her entry into Starfleet. Her struggle with her mother and with finding herself was such a delightful transformation. Reading about her fascination with space shrooms and abhorrence of cocktail parties and being told what's best was great fun. And the end was such a heartfelt relief of tension that found myself with the feels right along with her. Do yourself a favor and read this one even if you don't like Disco or if you can suspend your need for grand space battles and morality plays. This is about scientists and budding passion for discovery (no puns) and learning and finding yourself and succeeding and making a difference in the ways that *you* want to once you know what you want - exactly what post-scarcity society should be about. And Tilly is such a great character on and off the screen, so unlike many of the characters in Trek except maybe Wesley or Barclay. I found myself identifying with her and envying her and cheering her on. And I think I will be even more invested in her on the show as a result.

great StarTrek Discovery novel.

THe author is a well known Star Trek writer and this story was a page turner! All of the main characters were very well developed and described. This book was exceptional.

McCormick has done well

This book should have a large crossover appeal to younger readers who may just now be discovering Star Trek. The character development was well done, and merges well with the show as it stands today; no small feat when you consider how little characterization she had to work with.

It's a story about Tilly - How could it not be awesome

Tilly is by far one of my favorite characters in Star Trek and getting a peek into her teenage years was fun.
