Description

“This book tracks the case and asks why the culture was so slow to catch up.” ( The New York Times )"There really isn’t anyone more qualified to write about the saga of R. Kelly than Jim DeRogatis. Jim has done the work. He’s built the relationships. He’s cared about the outcome for almost two decades. It’s clear that Kelly isn’t just his white whale but that he sees the humanity in the women who have survived R. Kelly.xa0We really only need to hear from Jim." (Tarana Burke founder of the MeToo movement )“An absorbing, horrifying, and damning book. … Soulless is an important testament of DeRogatis’ slog towards justice, and of the forces that have seemingly cosseted R. Kelly and his career … It’s also a journalistic indictment: of Kelly himself; of the political machinery of Chicago; and of the music industry. … An essential book.” ( NPR.org )“A devastating, thorough accounting of Kelly’s alleged abuses as systematized predation. In explicitly outlining the multiple junctures at which Kelly, his supporters, law enforcement, and journalists have failed the dozens of young black women whom Kelly is accused of abusing, DeRogatis definitively—if also wearily—conveys the sheer magnitude of Kelly’s relative impunity.” ( The Atlantic )“More than a straight-forward account of Kelly’s wrongdoing … Soulless offers a dogged combination of biography, investigative reporting, and cultural criticism. … As much as Soulless is an account of Kelly’s misbehavior, it’s a finger firmly pointed in the direction of the people and institutions that enabled, and even encouraged, him.” ( Pitchfork )“A must-read.” ( Variety )“Kelly’s dirty secrets are revealed in this book, and so is the wide gap between true justice and the law.” ( AV Club )“Essential … the culmination of DeRogatis’ career reporting on Kelly’s alleged behavior.” ( USA Today )“A comprehensive document of the many allegations of statutory rape, sexual assault, and physical and psychological abuse levied against R. Kelly dating back to 1991. … packed start to finish.” ( Vulture )“DeRogatis blends investigative journalism, pop cultural criticism, and social commentary … [ Soulless ] is unflinching in its indictment of a culture and legal system unable to render any semblance of justice for black girls. … Soulless is the kind of intervention we need, especially when the stakes are this high.” ( LitHub )"If not for Jim DeRogatis, singer R. Kelly would still be selling out arenas, and the women who accuse the singer of sexual and physical assault would still be unheard. No one has followed their harrowing stories longer than DeRogatis, a mensch and one hell of a reporter. Soulless is an astonishing document of journalistic doggedness, and one man's decades-long pursuit of justice and truth." (Renee Graham Boston Globe opinion columnist )“Jim DeRogatis' dedication to covering R. Kelly's crimes for all these years has always stunned me, because I am completely unused to anyone other than Black women and girls caring this much about anything that happens to us. This book is a must-read look at both the devastating actions of an unrepentant predator and the dogged work of a journalist who refuses to let him escape accountability."xa0 (Jamilah Lemieux writer and cultural critic )"A brave and important book" ( Booklist )“A thorough exposé … harrowingly detailed [and] meticulously described … A piercing work of investigative journalism.” ( Kirkus )"An admirable account . . . a brutal corrective to R. Kelly's myth" ( Chicago Tribune )"For the last 19 years Jim DeRogatis has consistently been one of the few white male voices in media speaking up about a criminal whose crimes spans decades. Jim has elevated black women and their work into the public eye, even when the public wanted to ignore what was happening. This Soulless is a deep dive into some of the darkest places in a community and a culture, a post mortem for a predator and for the system that enabled him." (Mikki Kendall author of Hood Feminism and Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists ) “DeRogatis captivates in this expertly told narrative” ( Publishers Weekly ) Jim DeRogatis is an associate professor of instruction at Columbia College Chicago and the host, with Greg Kot, of the nationally syndicated public radio show Sound Opinions . The author of Let it Blurt: The Life and Times of Lester Bangs and other books, he spent 15 years as the pop music critic at the Chicago Sun-Times . He lives in Chicago.

Features & Highlights

  • The essential account of R. Kelly’s actions and their consequences, a reckoning two decades in the making
  • In November 2000, Chicago journalist and music critic Jim DeRogatis received an anonymous fax that alleged R. Kelly had a problem with “young girls.” Weeks later, DeRogatis broke the shocking story, publishing allegations that the R&B superstar and local hero had groomed girls, sexually abused them, and paid them off. DeRogatis thought his work would have an impact. Instead, Kelly’s career flourished. No one seemed to care: not the music industry, not the culture at large, not the parents of numerous other young girls. But for more than eighteen years, DeRogatis stayed on the story. He was the one who was given the disturbing videotape that led to Kelly’s 2008 child pornography trial, the one whose window was shot out, and the one whom women trusted to tell their stories—of a meeting with the superstar at a classroom, a mall, a concert, or a McDonald’s that forever warped the course of their lives.
  • Soulless: The Case Against R. Kelly
  • is DeRogatis’s masterpiece, a work of tenacious journalism and powerful cultural criticism. It tells the story of Kelly’s career, DeRogatis’s investigations, and the world in which the two crossed paths, and brings the story up to the moment when things finally seem to have changed. Decades in the making, this is an outrageous, darkly riveting account of the life and actions of R. Kelly, and their horrible impact on dozens of girls, by the only person to tell it.

If you love R. Kelly, read this book! Take the time and read the book.

Amazing writing! I was gripped! I finished the book in a weekend. I grew up listening to R. Kelly. His music is seared into my memories. I still know all the words to some of his songs. I was dumbstruck reading this book! There was so much THERE. There was a whole different said of him that people glossed over. Derogatis is a champion for young black girls. He should be proud of his work and this book.

Depressing...Disheartening...But The Victims Need To Be Heard

Jim DeRogatis has done a great service for these young African-American girls and women who suffered at the hands of R. Kelly. Their stories are harrowing and horrifying; their innocence savagely stolen from them from a predator who would use them under the guise of helping their singing careers, then toss them aside for his next underaged victim. It is depressing to see how predators who have power, fame, talent and money can get away with abusing children or young people. R.Kelly has a ton of enablers, down to that greedy female attorney Susan Loggans, who got wealthy from taking on Kelly's victims as clients, getting a small settlement for the victims and taking a huge chunk for herself, while forcing all to sign a Non Disclosure Agreement, forever protecting Kelly from being criminally prosecuted.

These were young girls who were aspiring rappers, singers and songwriters who honestly thought Kelly would help them. Once he was done with them, none ever followed their dreams, their spirits crushed by a man they looked up to, damaged by the abuse they endured. Yet, as DeRo points out, nobody cared because these were black girls. He has worked on the story of Kelly and his abuse of underaged victims for 25 years, and only now is something being done. It is appalling how there was so little interest, so much coverup, so much enabling, and when Kelly was brought to trial, the immense failure of the judicial system for his victims.

Dego's book is very thorough, well researched, and hard to put down. It is also hard to read at times, because of what these girls and women went through, and are still going through. You will never look at R. Kelly or his music again after reading this powerful book.

Soulless

This issue has been going on for so long I took a chance on reading it. It's beyond the imagination how this could have happened. The word "soulless" doesn't even begin to describe this level of evil.

Not even worth the $3 as expected. Biased on all accounts

Thank God I never bought this book I only took it on a trade in for playstation games traded in here . I was interested if his writing on this matter would be any different then when he was a music columnist for the Chicago suntimes and sure enough it’s extremely the same . More unfair and biased narratives combined with memoirs of an ambulance chaser ,chasing down women that are essentially groupies for dirt on the celeb they were enamored with . This guy is no different then the reporter in The Incredible hulk chasing and stalking one man for decades in some ways coercing women into running with a particular narrative , to be specific his narrative that this guy is a monster

An Important, Excellent, and Compelling Book

This is an outstanding, absorbing, horrifying, meticulously researched and documented book. Journalist/rock critic DeRogatis’ persistence (with related factors about which you will read) is the primary reason R Kelly is being brought to justice. Not a pleasant read because of the subject matter, but a necessary and compelling one.

Overall, very important book on R. Kelly and the pattern of predators & abusers

Overall, this was a very important book on R. Kelly and the pattern of predators & abusers. I appreciate DeRogatis's dedication and ability to endure to give voice to these young, black female victims of R. Kelly. I gave this book 4 stars because a lot of this information I already knew, from recent articles, interviews and accusations. However, one thing I do know, is that R. Kelly's behavior will not always be common knowledge or a part of major news media coverage, and this book ensures the security of the documentation of sexually exploited and victimized black girls by a famous artist who has suffered no serious consequences. So, long after the media frenzy is over, we have this book to document all of this predatory behaviors and abuse. The individual stories and backgrounds of these young girls helps to contextualize some of what made them vulnerable, but many of them did not have the same story of - a single parent household or 2-parent household, known as sexually promiscuous or not, good student or bad student - they were young, black girls, and despite R. Kelly's illiteracy, he learned a long time ago that white supremacy will allow him to continue his physical, sexual, emotional an psychological abuse against black women. Also, his enablers are not just his posse, but the Illinois legal system, which makes me think that many of the police, state attorneys, and Judges like Gaughn, have carried out some of these same crimes, and don't want their dirt exposed, so they protect low-lives like R. Kelly.
