Description

Review “Samantha Brinkman, Clark’s flawed but sympathetic Los Angeles defense attorney protagonist, must deal with more than one explosive case in her highly suspenseful third outing.…Clark keeps up the frenetic pace, but never allows the plot’s tricky developments to overwhelm her characterizations.” ― Publishers Weekly (starred review) “A twisting plot informed by Clark’s legal know-how will keep readers turning pages.” ― Booklist “Fans of Clark’s legal thriller series featuring defense attorney Samantha Brinkman will be pleased to learn that this third installment (after Moral Defense ) continues to deliver fast-paced plotting and savvy style laced with a healthy dose of humor. Clark, once again, nimbly handles the warp and weft of her interwoven characters and story lines, knitting them into a satisfying conclusion that will leave readers eagerly anticipating another Brinkman episode.” ― Library Journal “Marcia Clark has a proven talent for storytelling that transcends novels…and Snap Judgment , like her other books, masterfully illustrates that prowess. Propulsive plotting, visceral action, dexterous dialogue, and a palpable sense of time and place all conspire to make for an undeniably exhilarating read. And just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, she flips the script. If you haven’t yet become a convert for team Clark, you owe it to yourselves to do so. This is one pleasure that won’t leave you feeling the least bit guilty.” ―Criminal Element “ Snap Judgment sees the return of a terrific character in Samantha Brinkman. Marcia Clark renders the world of high-stakes law and flexible morals in perfect three dimensional clarity.” ―Authorlink “Marcia Clark certainly knows the ins and outs of the litigation business, and fans will be thrilled with this new mystery.” ― Suspense Magazine About the Author California native Marcia Clark is the author of Blood Defense and Moral Defense , the first two books in the Samantha Brinkman series, as well as Guilt by Association , Guilt by Degrees , Killer Ambition , and The Competition , all entries in the Rachel Knight series. A practicing criminal lawyer since 1979, she joined the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office in 1981, where she served as prosecutor for the trials of Robert Bardo―convicted of killing actress Rebecca Schaeffer―and, most notably, O. Features & Highlights

  • In the third installment of Marcia Clark’s bestselling series, attorney Samantha Brinkman’s investigation into a family’s deadly secrets is compromised by a threat from her past.
  • When the daughter of prominent civil litigator Graham Hutchins is found with her throat slashed, the woman’s spurned ex-boyfriend seems the likely suspect. But only days later, the young man dies in what appears to be a suicide. Or was it? Now authorities are faced with a possible new crime. And their person of interest is Hutchins. After all, avenging the death of his daughter is the perfect reason to kill. If he’s as innocent as he claims, only one lawyer has what it takes to prove it: his friend and colleague Samantha Brinkman.
  • It’s Sam’s obligation to trust her new client. Yet the deeper she digs on his behalf, the more entangled she becomes in a thicket of family secrets, past betrayals, and multiple motives for murder. To win her case, she’s prepared to bend any law and cross any boundary that stands in her way. Sam has always played by her own rules, and it’s always worked…so far. But this case cuts so deep and so personal that one false move could cost her everything.

Another masterfully crafted thriller in this series

Another masterfully crafted thriller from Marcia Clark, ripped from the headlines to deliver a believable storyline and relatable characters. This is the third installment in the Samantha Brinkman series, and Clark continues to impress with her skill and knowledge. This book is a little edgier than the previous two, but it is still a fantastic read. Clark slowly builds the plot and ratchets up the tension throughout as Sam methodically works the case. She leaves no stone unturned and no lead undiscovered.

The case itself is high profile and involves a few characters and many factors. Ultimately Sam has to navigate through many twists and turns and brick walls. To make matters worse, the key players involved in this case are battling it out in the public eye before any charges have even been filed. Sam and her colleagues have to scramble to stay ahead of the drama from both sides while investigating the many angles at the same time. This novel is definitely a roller coaster ride.

Although this is the third book in the series, it is not necessarily vital to read the first two books before this one. It would be helpful for character recognition and a familiarity with an alternate plotline that plays out parallel to the main plot, but Clark provides enough back story so that the reader isn't totally lost. Fans of the first two books will be delighted that Sam once again teams with her father, Dale, while working a case off the books. This separate case is truly a matter of life and death, so the tension and uncertainty from it stretches Samantha pretty thin as she tries to juggle both cases. Each chapter provides a new twist to the case, and you'll be guessing what the conclusion is right up until the very end.

I recommend this book to fans of thrillers and mysteries. I received this as a free ARC from Thomas & Mercer on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Love this series

I love Marcia Clark's books and the Samantha Brinkman series. Great suspense and mystery novel.

I won't read more in this series.

As in the first two books in the series, Brinkman skates along the ethical-unethical line here, easily crossing to the unethical side to get what she wants. I wouldn’t find that so objectionable if she felt remorse or some similar emotion when she does it. But she doesn’t. She seems to revel in it, going for the unethical way without even considering there might be an ethical way to reach her goal. And she doesn’t show any signs of trying to change her behavior.

That has cost all three books in the series at least 1 star in my reviews. And has now erased future books in it from my ‘To Read’ list. To repeat what I said in my reviews of the first two books: Forget Samantha Brinkman, Ms. Clark, and go back to Rachel Knight.

Snap judgment is a great read but takes too long to tell.

Snap Judgment hooks the reader in the beginning and in the end. But somewhere in the middle of the book the story gets bogged down with uninteresting characters and wild goose chases. I like this author and hope her editor takes out extraneous pages in the middle to keep the storyline more fascinating.

Preferred her previous work

I preferred her previous books. I found this one slow and often feeling repetitious. I do like Samantha, and want to read more of her, but I hope the pace of the next one is more energetic.

Snap Judgment

Well written, proceeded logically from start to finish with just the right amount of intrigue.
