Lynley Dodd graduated from the Elam School of Art in Auckland with a diploma in Fine Arts, majoring in sculpture. She went on to teach art before taking a break to start a family. She began to work as a freelance illustrator and collaborated with author Eve Sutton on My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes. There was no looking back as Lynley went on to write and illustrate her own books for children. Exuberant artwork and bouncy rhymes come together perfectly in books like Slinky Malinki and Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy. As well as being a visual delight, these are some of the most rewarding books for children and adults to read out loud.

Excellent rhyming story about a criminal cat!

I used to love it when my daughter asked to read this book. It's worth buying just to hear your two or three old year old shout "Slinky Malinki!" So adorable.

The rhyming in this book is so excellent. It starts by describing Slinky Malinki: "Slinky Malinki was blacker than black, a stalking and lurking, adventurous cat. He had bright yellow eyes, a warbling wail, and a kink at the end of his very long tail." By day, Slinky Malinki is a friendly and fun cat. "At night, to be brief, Slinky Malinki turned into a THIEF." He steals everything: "Slippers and sausages, biscuits, balloons, brushes and bandages, pencils and spoons." He carries everything back home to his house on the hill. Then one night, Slinky Malinki "stole MORE than before." He drags his stash home and piles everything in a heap on a mat. Suddenly things start tumbling down, causing quite a ruckus. The family comes out to the garage and finds Slinky Malinki among all his stolen goods. They say, "Oh NO! What a criminal cat! Tomorrow we'll have to take EVERYTHING back." Slinky Malinki is filled with shame and never steals again even "when whispers of wickedness stirred in his head." Wonderfully fun and charming book! The illustrations are excellent too!
