Features & Highlights

  • The No. 1 Bestseller! The deliciously sinister new novel from the No 1 bestselling author of Richard and Judy Book Club pick, Lying in Wait 'I could probably have been an actress. It is not difficult to pretend to be somebody else. Isn't that what I've been doing for most of my life?' Cordelia Russell has been living on the French Riviera for twenty-five years, passing herself off as an English socialite. But her luck, and the kindness of strangers, have run out. The arrival of a visitor from her distant past shocks Cordelia. She reacts violently to the intrusion and flees her flat to spend a drunken night at a glittering party. As dawn breaks she stumbles home through the back streets. Even before she opens her door she can hear the flies buzzing. She did not expect the corpse inside to start decomposing quite so quickly . . . 'Bloody brilliant!' Denise Mina 'The finest psychological thriller writer currently at work - no one gets under the skin of monstrous characters like she does' Tammy Cohen 'A tense, dark psychological study in narcissism with a suitably chilling ending' Good Housekeeping 'A wonderful feat of imagination, totally gripping, with a fascinating character at its heart' Sabine Durrant 'Dark, brutal and brilliant' Colette McBeth 'A triumph, from first page to last!' Sarah Hilary 'Monumentally good. Liz Nugent is a beautiful writer and among the very best storytellers in the world' Donal Ryan 'I loved, loved, loved Skin Deep - the compassion of it, the beauty of the language, how glamour and horror intersect, how the tension twists tighter and tighter and is brilliantly done' Marian Keyes 'Dazzling ... chilling, mesmerising and, ultimately, devastating. Pure storytelling genius' Mark Edwards 'Her darkest book yet - a compelling one-sitting read' Sinéad Crowley 'Utterly gripping, fast paced, and featuring my favourite sociopathic female character since Lady Macbeth' Louise O'Neill 'Incredibly dark, twisting and utterly mesmerising - you will not be able to put this down' Sinéad Moriarty 'Pitch dark and thrillingly original' Jane Casey 'Bloody hell, what a story! Brilliant, high octane stuff' Kit de Waal

A must-read IF.....

I LOVE LIZ'S BOOKS! This is the third Liz Nugent book I have read- started with Unraveling Oliver then Lying in Wait. I ordered Skin Deep and it arrived sooner than expected! I HIGHLY recommend Liz Nugent's books with some caveats: her books do not have happy/pleasant/justice served endings, if you are the type of reader who needs closure of that type you likely will not like her books. Also, her characters tend to have sociopathic and psychopathic traits, so if you need a protagonist you can root for (or even find tolerable) you will be very unhappy. Caveats aside, her books are searing and the writing is wonderfully done. Her talent for drawing you into the mind of the character is astounding. If you are looking to read her books, I would start with Unraveling Oliver. Skin Deep and Lying in Wait are wonderful but are the deep end of the pool- jump at your own risk!

Deep, Dark,and Daring

Utterly amazing. If you are the type of reader who writes ' The main character was such an awful person so I just lost interest," then this is not the book for you. If, however, human nature in all its gory glory, fascinates you, then this may be one of the best books you have ever read.

Haunting

There is much to keep the attention of the psychological thriller devotee, however to classify this book as anything other than literature does it a disservice. Broad and fine themes are explored in this haunting story of this woman's life, a woman who was defined by her gender and appearance and who tries very hard to work within those definitions even as the sands shift beneath her and having no perspective as to herself, her personal history and her choices. Scarlet O'Hara, she is not. Then again, if Scarlet O'Hara had grown up in this place and time, she would have probably been running a bar.

A rarely-given five star read for me; very compelling and Liz Nugent's best by far

Liz Nugent has outdone herself with her latest amazing work, Skin Deep. Perhaps I should go back and remove a star from my rating of her previous novel, Lying in Wait, as it doesn't even compare to this one. I rarely give a 5-star rating.

What a picture of depravity and ugliness she weaves in the character of stunningly beautiful Delia Russell. The reader is quickly drawn into the story, particularly while learning details of Delia's sad childhood which contributed to her sociopathic personality.

I've noted a few reviewers were unhappy with Skin Deep's conclusion, but I believe it was most fitting....and a haunting example of poetic justice which the reader won't soon forget.

Nugent Pens Another Character to Dread

This is my second read by Liz Nugent and I was, again, pulled in and couldn't look away. I was sure that no one could supplant Lydia of Nugent's Lying In Wait from her throne as Character I Most Dread. Delia, now she shares it with Lydia.

The summary is perfect and just scratches the surface of what awaits the reader. The fact of the body in Delia's apartment at the outset comes full circle in the end but in between is the story of the path of her life and the destruction she's wrought in her wake up to that moment. I can't say I was in any way sympathetic to her but she was a character worth reading about. There are POV chapters for some of the main people she's interacted with or crossed in life and were very well done. With a character like Delia, having a counterpoint to measure her veracity and also see how others saw her was invaluable. Delia also relates the wild stories of Inishcrann that her father told her and those were well done also. Still the parts that I found most heart-rending were the letters to Delia from James.

I chose this as my weekday book during a very busy week but think it's also a good weekend book. I had to put it down often but I didn't want to and couldn't wait to get back to it. Perfect for reading on vacay. Nugent is on my must read list, so I'm giving all the recommendations.

Incredible!

The book is amazing! I couldn’t put it down!! It’s well written with a great writing style. The characters evoke a lot of emotion (both positive and negative), and the plot, although simple in concept, is extremely well thought out and keeps me wanting more.

Shocking Thriller

Skin Deep, by Liz Nugent, is a deeply disturbing psychological thriller.
Delia O’Flaherty (Cordelia Russell) is the only girl in a family of three brothers born in the Irish tight knit island community of Innishcrann. Thoroughly spoiled by her father, Martin, at the expense of her brothers and, even, her mother. Disaster follows her throughout her life, affecting everyone she meets, never showing any remorse and doing anything within her power to achieve what she wants.
Is it nature or nurture? Or maybe both. Her father certainly molded her into believing she was the beautiful princess of Innishcrann. Filling her head with the island’s folklore, quite often ugly and harsh.
Liz Nugent portrays Delia’s character with skill, but gives her no redeeming qualities and at times utterly shocking the reader.
The story follows Delia from mainland Ireland to London and then abroad, as she moves from one community to another, destroying lives.
A very unexpected conclusion and more details about Martin’s live gives Deep Skin a shocking ending.
Recommended. Thanks to Liz Nugent, NetGalley and the Publishers the opportunity to read Deep Skin for an honest review, which I have given.
