Description

Renowned child psychologist Dr. Amanda Gummer commented on the book’s value: “Children can have many mixed feelings when their parents separate or divorce and I applaud anyone who offers support and tools to help them understand the process and manage their feelings. Storybooks such as the story of Moon Fairy and Sun Prince are a lovely, gentle way for children to understand that life can still be happy and fulfilling after parents separate. This is also a great way for parents to open-up conversations about their family arrangements; giving them the opportunity to talk to their children about the situation and explain how any changes will affect them and be implemented. Young children often struggle to voice their concerns and anxieties as they may not have the vocabulary to express themselves in the way they’d like; similarly, older children may not want to talk directly about it for fear of upsetting their parents. Using fantasy characters such as the ones in the book give the children a way of thinking and talking about the situation without making it too personal or sad. My recommendation is that parents first read this book together with their child and then, for those children who are old enough to read themselves, leave it somewhere accessible so they can return to it whenever they choose and re-read the parts of the story that are relevant to their situation or resonate with them.”To read this book is tantamount to joining Father Bouyer at the Easter Vigil and having the privilege of hearing his catechetical and mystagogical instructions to the newly baptized. Father Bouyer's meditations on discovering God, on baptism–confirmation–Eucharist, and on life in Christ are here presented with the spiritual power of a Saint Cyril of Jerusalem. This book will renew and re-center all Christians and is a perfect gift for catechumens." – Matthew Levering, James N. and Mary D. Sun Prince steals Moon Fairy's clothes

I was very excited to get this book, in hopes that it would aid the conversation with my four year old about why daddy can't come live with us again. The reviews for this were all so positive. In the beginning of the book, after Sun Prince watches Moon Fairy swimming naked, he steals her clothes as a way to meet her. He gives them back and so starts their love story. I really don't want my children to think that that type of behavior is alright, and I especially don't want them to think that they should date someone who would do that. This book is not for people who are not super friendly with their coparent. It talks about how Sun Prince and Moon Fairy still greet each other every day. This might leave children wanting you to be more friendly than possible with their other parent. The message that the book is trying to convey is a topic that has next to no children's books published about it, but this book does not do a good job at getting the point across.

Such a cute story!! Beautiful explanation

I returned this book because it wasn't appropriate for my child who is having a hard time understanding relationships. They are 5 and immature socially. However had they been older this story would have e been beautiful and so well executed. It's so sweet and explains the wholeness of parents and how they just love each other one moment but later don't and the two characters take the love and focus it on the kiddo.

A book for amicable divorces when children are involved

This book starts with great information and guidance for adults before launching into a beautifully illustrated fantasy story for children. If you’re working through and amicable divorce, this is a great way to explain to children why their parents can’t be together.

I will say, the ruse used by the Sun Prince isn’t quite in tune with the story’s audience, however, the incident was not salacious.

Bittersweet

This is probably the most optimistic interpretation of divorce ever. Some of the content felt a little inappropriate for children (stealing clothes, skinny dipping). I could see some parents being revolted by it and others using the expression of intimacy to help teach children about love and relationships not always working out. The whole book is a mature topic so it really comes down to how the parents want to handle it. That said, the art is beautiful. It's well written. There's a lot of value in the story. I could see parents reading it with their kids even if their marriage is fine. People break up for all sorts of reasons, and the messaging is universal enough that kids can grow up with a healthier understanding of relationships than what they'd get out of Disney.

Inappropriate for kids in my book but still a great read.

Although I thought it's suppose to be a children's book I felt like it was for a much older age group. but to be honest I would totally read this book again.
