Features & Highlights
From D-Day to the Battle of the Bulge and more, here is the authorized biography of one of the most celebrated paratroopers of Easy Company, Sergeant Shifty Powers, the legendary sharpshooter from the Band of Brothers.
As a boy, Darrell “Shifty” Powers’s goal was to become the best rifle shot he could be. His father trained him to listen to the woods, to “see” without his eyes. Little did Shifty know his finely-tuned skills would one day save his life—and the lives of his fellow paratroopers. As one of the original men who trained at Camp Toccoa, Georgia, Shifty was one out of only two soldiers in Easy Company to initially earn the coveted expert marksman designation. He parachuted into France on D-day and fought for a month in Normandy; eighty days in Holland; thirty-nine in the harshly cold winter of Bastogne; and for nearly thirty more near Haguenau, France, and the Ruhr pocket in Germany.
Shifty’s War
is a tale of heroism and adventure, of a soldier’s blood-filled days fighting his way fromthe shores of France to the heartland of Germany, and the epic story of how one man’s skills as a sharpshooter and engagingly unassuming personality propelled him to a life greater than he could have ever imagined.

Shifty's war and recovery
I've read most of the "first account" books written by members of Easy Company, so wasn't sure if I trusted a book written about a member of Easy Company by an author I hadn't heard of. Marcus Brotherton does a great job capturing the tone and wit of Shifty Powers. It helps that Shifty contributed to the Band of Brothers through interviews, so that reading his words was accompanied by the sound of those words. Some of the dialogue was lifted directly from the series, which was a little disappointing, because it seemed to leave Shifty's story for a few moments. I loved the last several chapters, because they capture a side of Powers that only his friends and family would know. I applaud Shifty's willingness to tell his post-war story, to include his struggles adjusting to civilian life and working through his vivid memories of war. Many of my students are also recovering from their service in Iraq and Afghanistan, so I'll suggest this book to them, as they work through their own tormented memories.

Thank you Shifty !
Amazing story about Shifty Powers , expert rifleman in the Band of Brothers Parachute Infantry Regiment. Shifty and men like him did their part in stopping one of the worst evils in human history . The unbelievable trauma these men went thru affected them for the rest of their lives. I don't think any
of them , due to their modesty, humility, and integrity, fully grasped what a great thing they did .
To them, they were simply doing their duty. Truly the greatest generation . Thank you Shifty !

One of the best books I've ever read.
I loved this book! If you're a WWII history buff, you'll thoroughly enjoy it. The writing in the first person, makes it seem like you're sitting in front of Shifty listening to first hand accounts of their experiences, and atrocities they saw and survived through, some funny stories, most not. I hated to come to the end of the book as I felt like I was having to say goodbye to a dear friend as the writing is on such a personal level.

A great little book about a Virgina mountain boy in the Band of Brothers
Well written, it explains his excellence in the battles as the way his father raised him. He was well respected by his fellow paratroopers and returned to a normal life in the mountains of Virginia. I wish I had the opportunity to sit on his front porch and talk to him, but this book is the next best thing to doing that.

Shifty's War as told by the man who lived it
The author did a superb job on this biography of an American hero and a simple man who did great things for this nation. The story is told from Shifty Powers's perspective, in his phrasing, and how he spoke. Yes, Shifty was one of the Band of Brothers who have become part of the American lexicon thanks to Stephen Ambrose's book, Band Of brothers...followed by the HBO series of the same name. He grew up in the coal mining country in the hills of southwestern Virginia where he learned to hunt, listen & smell for game in the woods, and became an expert marksman. This he used to great effect during his service with E Company, 506th Parachute Infantry Battalion, 101st ABN DIV in WWII. He fought in 3 major campaigns - D-Day, Market-Garden, and Bastogne/Battle of the Bulge operating as a sniper and saving the lives of many of his brothers in arms. If you want to know about character, honor, loyalty, love of your fellow soldiers, love for your country, and love for your family, this book is for you.

You must read this book
After seeing the HBO series when it was released, I have read many of the books related to the series and the men depicted in it. While all I felt were quite interesting and well done, I recently came across "Shifty's War" This is by far the most engaging and interesting book by far. I got to know and feel Shifty in a personal way. I knocked this book out in three legs flying back and forth from Tampa to Detroit. I could not wait to hear what story Shifty had to tell next!
Kudos to Marcus for telling Shifty's story in a way that I have not read in any of the other Band of Brothers.
Read this book!

Thank you
I just finished reading Shifty's War and I wanted to congratulate Marcus Brotherton on another wonderful job. I was fortunate to hear Shifty speak once, and he was such an honest, genuine man. I feel that really comes across in Marcus' book. I could almost hear the twang in Shifty's voice as if he were telling the story himself. It is sad to see so many heroes like Shifty pass away each day, but our world is a better place because of what they did with the time they had on this earth.

I got this for my Air Force Veteran father who’s 95. He enjoyed it tremendously and is lending it to all his buddies. A great and moving story!
