Bemused after seeing some of the critiques levelled by some of Ms Paretsky's long-time fans who were unhappy with the political views expressed by VI, the portrayal of the payday loan company and VI's physical travails. Surely they've read some of the other books in the series. Many of the characters have always been unlikeable, even Vic's friends. Her politicals views and values have always been freely expressed and the action is no more extreme in this book than in many of the others.
When I open a Sara Paretsky novel I look for a suspension of my everyday life. That and a kick-ass detective who fears nothing, not even the possibility of encroaching osteoporosis.
In the unspoken contract between writer and reader, wherein the reader forks over money, time and trust and the writer promises to entertain, Ms Paretsky never, ever disappoints.

Liberal read only

The story was okay, but I didn't realize I was reading a totally political book. It was a very political and totally ruined the murder mystery, with all the political crap thrown in. I support the President, so I have the freedom to put this author on the way back burner.

Confusing and not fun to read

Too many characters; not well introduced. Poorly written. Too much liberal political agenda and Trump administration bashing. Stay away from this book.

Stick to the story

Very self indulgent-V I is ridiculously political and it adds nothing to the story. The book drags and is all over the place because of a weak storyline. Very disappointed.

A worthy addition to the collection

I've probably read all the V. I. Warshawski novels over the past 35 years. V. I. is a warrior who stands up for the poor and dispossessed against rich business owners and politicians that think it is their right to trample on the rights of the poor. "Shell Game" fits comfortably in the formula established in earlier books. In this one, two cases are presented to V. I.; one involved the Canadian nephew of her friend Lotty Herschel, who is suspected of murdering a Syrian refugee, which may indicate that terrorism is involved. The second case involves a young niece of V. I.'s ex-husband who is desperately searching for her sister, who went missing after returning from a corporate retreat.

"Shell Game" features many of V. I.'s favorite villains: self-important corporate leaders, thuggish ICE agents, impotent police officers, Russian criminals, and even a predatory payday lender. Using her legal training and her willingness to follow leads wherever they might lead, while never attempting to hide her contempt for the bad guys, there is never a hint of compromise in V.I. Warshawski, and I think that is what makes her an effective protagonist.

Two small criticisms. First, years ago, V. I.'s adventures took place in a country where good guys could win. I'm not at all sure that's true anymore. In a country of lost values "Shell Game" tells a pretty depressing story in which, at the end of this story, the victims are still victims, with no real hope that anything will get better. Second, V. I.'s small group of people that care about her (Lotty Herschel, Murray Ryerson, a couple of sympathetic cops) are pretty much absent from this book and, with them, goes much of the human aspect of V. I. This is a lady that needs some softening, but not in this book.

Overall, I am a fan of V. I. Warshawski, and while this isn't, by any means a "feel good" story, it is well worth reading. My recommendation, though, for people that haven't read her before, would be to start with one of Ms. Paretsky's earlier V. I. novels.

Farewell Sara Paretsky

I have been a faithful reader of Sara Paretsky since Indemnity Only in 1982, but started slowing down about ten years ago as her politics became more of the book than the plot. But, I decided to give her another chance with Shell Game, and I regret that I did.

The plot is tangled and implausible, that a relative of Lottie's has a "detective need" exactly when VI's ex-husband's nieces show up (who she has not had contact with since before the time frame of the first book) with their own "detective needs" and, voila, they're from the same situation.

Then there's the issue of her character tropes. Yes, everyone has to come back in to fulfill the structure of the VI stories. But they are all getting tired and, inexcusably, her timeline is skewed and stretched. In the first book, VI was at least 26, if not older. In 2018, she's at least 62 and Paretsky has her functioning like someone 20 years younger. The grating inconsistencies go on and on, but I won't detail them.

All could be forgiven, but that the book is only a loose framework to hang all (and every and in detail) of Paretsky's political views. But it is not just one political issue she hammers on. She includes the laundry list of every complaint of her political worldview, a cornucopia spilling out in every sentence that takes your mind away from the skeleton of the plot. As she does, she uses stereotypes that would be inexcusable if the same stereotypes were of people in her political viewpoint. She even adds an icing on the cake (that's a really good pun if you've read the book, but don't): that
rich people are all the same and the source of everything bad, going so far as to say that capitalism is the evil of the world. I think Ms. Paretsky makes her living via the capitalistic system as does her character VI, who is a businesswoman.

One last inexcusable point: how can such a wonderful detective NOT know the name of her other downstairs neighbor? And how after being assaulted in almost every book, often in or near her apartment, does she not have, not only an adequate security system, but not even a motion sensor light to light up her hallway?

Goodbye Sara Paretsky. The memories of the good times with VI over the years will still make me happy. But you've jumped the shark. Farewell.

From entertaining to political negativity

Sad that books I’ve eagerly anticipated for years have turned into polarizing, political agenda driven media. The platform you once used to entertain now has one less reader. No longer anticipating your next novel...

Immigration and archeology

Paretsky once again hits the ball out of the park in this novel's adventures of V.I. Warshawski.
Making salient points about current US immigration paranoia, Paretsky weaves a compelling tale of Russian oligarchs, Syrian historical sites being looted, and young women in jeopardy.
A thriller packed with biting social commentary.

Very disappointed

I wish I could give this less than one star. Only got through the first 2 chapters! In the past, I have been a big fan, and have read all of the VI novels, but the last 2....Ms Paretsky's book are too political and leftist. Perhaps she should just write a political commentary, expressing all of her opinions, dislike for US, President, ICE, anyone who is not like her or does not agree with her views. She's entitled to her opinion, but I thought I was reading a fiction mystery novel, not a rant. Sorry, I'm done with this author and with this series. So sad....

Political Nonsense

I have so enjoyed all the previous VI books. This novel was a great disappointment. When a author allows their political views to color their work, it takes the joy out of the book. I will NOT be purchasing any further books by this author.
