Description

“Full of stunning underwater photography, fascinating facts and shark-reverant prose.”— Los Angeles Times “Brian Skerry has devoted much of his career to capturing, in his words, ‘intimate portraits’ of sharks. In his new book, Shark , you can come along for the ride to the shallow waters of Cape Cod, the shores of New Zealand’s North Island, and the mangroves of the Bahamas. This book not only lets you see these ancient predators in their native habitat, it provides the kinds of facts and context that satisfies the curiosity of novices and shark junkies alike. Driven by a sense of urgency that these species are under threat, Skerry has assembled a set of stunning images that show exactly what’s now at stake.”— Juliet Eilperin, Washington Post staff writer and author of Demon Fish: Travels Through the Hidden World of Sharks“Powerful images bring to life the reality of these ocean predators and the plights they face for survival…fascinating, hair-raising and inspiring…The book reminds readers that saving sharks isn't simply about doing the right thing, it's also about doing something critical to the overall health of the sea” –Mother Nature Network BRIAN SKERRY is a photojournalist specializing in marine wildlife and underwater environments. Since 1998 he has been a contract photographer for National Geographic magazinexa0covering a wide range of subjects and stories. In 2014 he was named a National Geographic Photography Fellow. In 2015 Skerry was named a Nikon Ambassador, and in 2017 he received the National Geographic Photographer's Photographer Award.

Features & Highlights

  • Get closer to the beauty and power of sharks with award-winning National Geographic photographer Brian Skerry as he illustrates their remarkable evolutionary adaptations and their huge importance to marine ecosystems around the world. For decades, acclaimed underwater photographer Brian Skerry has braved ocean depths and the jaws of predatory giants to capture the most remarkable photographs of sharks around the world. In this collection of the best of those pictures, Skerry draws on his growing personal respect for these animals to share intimate stories of their impact. Focusing on four key species—great white, whitetip, tiger, and mako sharks—Skerry's photographs span from his early work, photographing them from cages, to his recent unencumbered scuba dives. With additional text by top National Geographic writers, Skerry's images and stories encourage a change in attitude toward these top predators, ultimately showing how they are the keys to the healthy balance of nature underwater.

A fascinating book you must get!

If you have any interest in sharks and in conserving this keystone predator and the ocean, you must get this book. If you have any interest in photography, particularly underwater images, you must get this book by the master, Brian Skerry. The text, by Mr. Skerry and National Geographic writers, is excellent, informative and spellbinding. The pictures, however, are the real reason this book stands out from any of the many books about sharks. Skerry is an artist with the camera. He captures not just the power and grace of sharks, but the poetry and beauty of the most feared and maligned species of sharks. And he shows us why the fear is misplaced, and rather than be maligned, sharks should be respected and engender awe. This is the perfect book for any season, but especially in summer, not just for the coffee table, but for reading an engrossing story illustrated by the master.

Beautiful

I bought this for my six-year-old grandson because he loves sharks. It's not really suited to his age, but what a stunning book. Extraordinary photography throughout. I found myself reading some of the text which is clear, informative and engaging. I'll save it for a while before I give it to him, and probably learn a little about sharks myself in the meantime.

Beautifully sharky

A nice balance of educational, and personal, information at the beginning of each chapter adds to the beautiful collection of photos Mr. Skerry shares with the reader. Several photos remind me of shark dives I've already been on (Guadalupe, Bahamas, Rhode Island), and make me look forward that much more to shark dives still on my calendar. A must-have for serious shark-buffs.

Outstanding all around!

Nailed it! My only complaint is that it's too short. Read a chapter a night and was sad when I finished it. Skerry and the outside authors know their stuff and are great story-tellers. If you are a shark lover, this is for you. If you are a shark fearer, this may change your mind. Superb photos throughout, and solid biology. A great read and a feast for the eyes.

Excellent book! A must read for the shark enthusiast.

Best book ever written about sharks. This book does not play on the man eater approach. But rather, it is a completely objective and conservation approach about some of the most powerful fish in the ocean.
