Description

Review “A rousing tale of forbidden love, civil war, horrible death and other things Irish. …A fine adventure in storytelling…[and] a well-crafted, satisfying work of historical fiction, as are all of Delaney’s novels; respectful of the facts while not cowed by them, and full of life.” — Kirkus Reviews “A tale of personal healing and spiritual redemption against the Irish Civil war…Delaney takes great pains to evoke not only the physical but spiritual beauty of the land and people along the River Shannon. He provides incredibly researched details about not only the geological nature of a river winding its way to the sea but the mystical effect this simple body of water has had on its residents for millennia [and] provides timely insights about the raw, damaged output of war and the far-reaching impact it can have…This book is almost impossible to put down and provides a very satisfying, and maybe even surprising, conclusion to all the different storylines.”— Midwest Irish Focus “Thoughtful, spiritual though not overbearing, and rounded out with a nice vein of intrigue.” — Publishers Weekly From the Hardcover edition.

Absolutely delightful!

I have so enjoyed this audio book about Ireland and war and love. It is read by the Frank Delaney who does a great job with expressions and distinguishing the character voices. I have so enjoyed this book that I hate for it to end. I'm now on the last CD. As an audiobook addict, I listen to them continually in my car. Some of them are good for one time, then I donate to the library, but Shannon is definitely a keeper. I highly recommend it. Another plus, is that it has absolutely no profanity; which proves that a good story can be told without it.

To Remember and to Forget

"Shannon" tells the story of Robert Shannon, an American hero of World War I who seeks to rid himself of shell shock through the pursuit of his roots in Ireland. A chaplain who has seen the horrors of war and scandal in his home diocese of Boston, Shannon is sent to Ireland to remember and to forget.

While traipsing up and down the length of the Shannon River, Robert Shannon meets people from his past as well as ordinary who give the reader a taste of Irish life. Set in the time of the Irish Civil War, it provides a bit of Irish history in addition to the fictional sojourn. The book is livened by a bit of love and a developing relationship between two good people.

At times I thought that this journey was detouring into some issues that I prefer not to afford the dignity of recognition, but author Frank Delaney quickly gets back on the road of his story. Overall it is a good book, more a tale than a taste of Ireland, but definitely a worthwhile read.

Definitely got better the second half of the book. Ireland was fantastic from start to finish but Shannon took a while to draw me in.
