Able to relate with characters dropped into a unique new world, she quickly fell in love with the fantasy genre. The award-winning author of The Girl Who Could See, Kara is passionate about crafting stories of light shattering darkness, connecting with readers, and becoming best friends with a mermaid-though not necessarily in that order. Features & Highlights

  • Peter Pan has crash-landed back on Neverland. But this is not the island he remembers. Desperate to rescue Claire and the fractured Lost Boys, Peter must unravel what truly tore his dreamland apart. But with each step, he is haunted by more of his own broken memories. Not even Pan himself is what he seems. Claire Kenton is chained to a pirate ship, watching the wreckage of Neverland rocked by tempests. When she finally finds her brother, Connor is every bit as shattered as the island. Claire may have pixie dust flowing in her veins—but the light of Neverland is flickering dangerously close to going out forever.

Leave off with Dust

If you liked Dust, just stop there. It’s fine by itself. Just tell yourself everything worked out fine in the end and everyone was happy on Neverland.

Okay, I’m joking, but just a little. This was a bad book, but it was also a bad sequel. The biggest issue was the character arcs. Dust executed a very good positive change arc for Claire and expertly set up for Peter’s arc in book two. But that doesn’t happen. Instead, within the first few chapters of Shadow, Peter grows up and matures and Claire regresses right back to where she started. So, we get to have Claire learn the truth all over again, this time with a more mature Peter at her side. So, that was super disappointing. Also…totally introduced several random characters out of the blue that were NOT foreshadowed in Dust. Kinda felt like whiplash.

A lot of people found this book to be dark and violent. I agree on the violence. I didn’t find it beyond the pale for myself, but it was excessive and forced. There are several lethal places you can stab someone and some produce a more graphically violent picture in a reader’s head. It seemed like she picked the violent-er option just for kicks. (And also killed some people just for kicks, I felt.)

I didn’t find the book to be dark, but totally understand the people who did. All the “dark” parts came across as laughably melodramatic, however, I wasn’t very emotionally invested.

If you LOVED the characters in Dust, you may find the sequel a difficult, depressing read. If you just thought it was interesting and entertaining, likely the sequel won’t put you down much…but it probably won’t hold your attention, either.

You won’t be disappointed

This book kept me intrigued throughout each chapter. Loved it so much! I think I like Kara Swanson’s first book “Dust” better in how the story line goes, but “Shadow” was still so much fun to read and Kara Swanson did a great job wrapping up the series. The characters do go through some dark moments just to forewarn others, but overall I highly recommend these books!
