Grabs you by the heart

Since Sal was young, she has been protecting her sister and preparing for the future. She has learned a lot from watching YouTube videos; how to light a fire, how to build a shelter, how to snare and skin a rabbit and most importantly, how to kill her mother’s boyfriend without him uttering a sound. Now, at 13, she must put her knowledge to the test as Sal and her 10-year-old sister, Peppa, flee their home and head into the wilderness.
Mick Kitson wrote a book that was, on one hand, tough to read and, on the other, impossible to put down. I was enraptured by Sal. I rooted for her, I cried with her, I just wanted to hug her and make everything okay. Sal grabs you by the heart and stays with you even after the last page is turned.

I loved this book

I loved this book! I will read it again. Wonderful characters and story of love and courage. The setting was great, although as an American I had to google quite a few words that I was not familiar with. Mick Kitson - I wouldn't mind if you continue with the story of Sal and her family ...... as I hated for the book to end. I found the book on the shelf at the local library where I still go to check out and hold real books.

I loved this book. So raw and real. Months later I still find myself thinking about it. Beautifully haunting. I will keep this in my library forever.

Breathtaking

I checked this out from my library. This book is so good that I got angry with my kids when they wouldn’t shut up while I was trying to read. I was more emotionally invested in these characters and their stories than I have ever been with any other book. I didn’t want it to end.

Pensive, adventurous, and moving!

Sal is a compelling tale that takes us on a journey into the lives of two young sisters as they learn to escape and survive both the predators and dangers found in the Scottish wilderness as well as those within their own home.

The prose is astute and vividly descriptive. The characters are witty, vulnerable, loyal, resourceful, and endearing. And the plot is a heart-wrenching story about alcoholism, sexual abuse, poverty, self-preservation, coming-of-age, innocence, morality, and selfless love.

Overall, Sal is a profound, sophisticated, inspiring novel that highlights the complex dynamics of sister relationships and does an exquisite job of reminding us just how indomitable the human spirit can truly be.

... story of two sisters who run away from a painful and abusive home

Sal is the story of two sisters who run away from a painful and abusive home. The older sister Sal has meticulously prepared for the adventure by learning about survival off the internet and in books. This is where the text really takes off. The character of Sal is a well-written and believable portrait of a young person on the spectrum.
The sisters escape to the Scottish wilderness to let the news of their running away blow over; they want to eventually go back to help their mother. In the meantime, they work together to find food, build shelter, and protect each other from the painful memories they share.
This is a quick read, but the topics and characters stay with you. I would recommend this to young adults and readers who are looking for a narrator who teaches you new ways of looking at the world.
