Postcard Reviews - Feb 2020Part of an exciting new series spearheaded by the Royal School of Needlework, this forward-looking guide explores the intricate art of embroidering boxes for use as keepsakes and jewellery boxes. There are three projects to try: a small treasure chest with a curved lid, embroidered dragonfly detail and a false floor; a hexagonal box with a beautiful embroidered lid depicting afternoon tea, and an intricate stumpwork casket with a mirror in the lid and a hidden drawer. Each has a template and extensive instructions for preparation, embroidery and construction.I This is a book of joy for embroidery fans .xa0The stunning embroidered boxes are exquisite. They are also accompanied with a history of the box, and from start to finish you are guided step by step to make your very own piece of art.xa0The boxes are usable, beautiful and the embroidery designs are just amazing.xa0There are design templates to copy, but I think it would be easy to design my own to make it more personal.xa0Every fan of embroidery would love this book, it is pretty, the photography of the boxes really show off the intricacy of each one and the boxes are achievable to make. 5*/5 Heather's passion for embroidery began at a very young age; training at a fashion house in Yorkshire before graduating from the RSN Apprenticeship. Beautiful, helpful book

I checked out several box-making books before buying this one. I figured since it was produced by the RSN, it would be good. It is. Very clear instructions. Inspiring projects. Beautiful pictures. Although it's geared toward creating your own boxes, I bought it for ideas for creating diptychs and framing embroidery & textiles. It gave me a lot of ideas. Wonderful book and a joy to just sit with a cup of tea and read for pleasure. (The only issue I had with this order was the packaging. It arrived banged up. I didn't return it because of the coronavirus... Amazon workers are working as hard as possible, and books are taking longer to arrive due to priority of food & cleaning supplies, and I was eager to read it. This is not part of the rating of the book, just a heads-up.)

This book has clear instructions and takes you completely through the process of building boxes. The pictures are great, it shares the best way to get started, how to plan out a box, has easy to complicated projects, and ideas for other projects. The final project in this book is absolutely gorgeous and makes the entire book worth the price! Very pleased with this purchase! Highly recommend it!

Inspiring and so well crafted

This is a beautiful book all around. I really found it very useful, especially all the info on constructing boxes with drawers. The projects are just neat and gorgeously crafted, with fantastic little details that make them all the more attractive. The boxes feature secret drawers, hinges, locks, unusual shapes and beautiful techniques, all of which is incredibly inspiring.

Stunningly beautiful

This book is so gorgeous that it is well worth the price even if you never make a single box! The step by step instructions are precisely detailed and the photographs follow the instructions perfectly. Not only have I planned out a series of boxes for Christmas presents for my grown children (their childhood “books”, artwork, awards, etc) but now I have a very exciting off the typical tourist trails to visit in London. I can hardly wait!

details here not elsewhere

I have been looking for a book like this for years! i have lots of books on embroidered boxes but nothing as detailed as in this one. also the details on materials, types of needs, and how to mount embroideries without having to use glue. all of my other books use glue and it can gum up the system and this is about sewing!! yes! i love this book.
