Princesses Have Drama Too

Olivia does her homework; loves her family; and tries to be the polite, sophisticated princess Genovia needs her to be. So, why can't she get her cousin to stop bullying her or avoid boy drama?

I loved it so much

S'wonderful! I loved it so much. I can not remember the last time I actually laughed out loud while reading a book. Or even cried!

It was such a throwback for me; both because of getting to spend time with a Genovian princess (and Grandmère) but also just being a teen. Only Meg Cabot can give me fond memories of being a teenager.
Of course most of those memories were of me reading the original Princess Diaries and writing in my own journal.
I actually finished reading this and pulled out my journal to write in for the first time in months! And I undoubtedly sounded like a teen girl due to both the context and my mind frame (I was definitely channeling my inner Mia, plus there was a guy mentioned).

I will admit I was a little more excited to hear everything going on with Mia, (I did grow up with her, which is where the crying comes in) and I loved the little mentions of the previous series. Including one mention about the previous series!

Olivia is such a delight. What's not to love about her? The voice given to her is simply perfect it feels so authentic and down to earth. She's so level headed; from realizing her crush to dealing with the snobby girl she handles it so well (though I might be comparing her to her maybe a bit over dramatic half-sister Mia). But it's also the voice of a new teen girl so you do get more than a few "pre-teen" moments that young readers will absolutely love and older readers who are long past all that will feel totally nostalgic over.
Who doesn't love a little middle school "drama" in hindsight?

I think my favorite part of this entire series is that; while I got to grow up and go through my teen years (2003-2010) with Mia and The Princess Diaries with this series I get to relive those early years from another perspective and of course having all that long behind me it's much better enjoyed and appreciated.

I love seeing characters from the Princess Diaries books

I really adored this book, as I did the previous two books. Cute illustrations too! I love seeing characters from the Princess Diaries books. I love how similar Olivia is to Mia and also how different she is. They both want everyone to like them. I like how Olivia also has a nemesis and how she deals with her. I like her interactions with Prince Khalil. I liked the bet she made with her best friend regarding Mia's baby names (even if it didn't work out the way she expected). I adored Grandmere as a chaperone, especially the Tupac scene. I loved the pop culture references. Olivia has a good heart and she wants to spread kindness, which is admirable. Excited to see what happens to her next!

Cute and sweet

You could say I’m going way outside the box with this one. I normally don’t read middle school aged books but this is from the fantabulous Meg Cabot. Plus it is an off-shoot of my guilty pleasure, The Princess Diaries. So, of course, I had to pick it up. Now, because this isn’t my usual genre I hadn’t read the first two books before I received this. But knowing it's part of a series, I sat down and read them. It definitely had me wanting to dive right back into Diaries.

The story is very much a slice of royal life. But a regular girl thrust into royal life slice. I found it very reminiscent of the original books while being age appropriate. There’s plenty of humor that had me smiling. Olivia is sweet, a little bit nerdy, and going through the normal tween things. There’s bullying, crushes, friends, and family.

It’s a cute story and one that I can definitely see sharing with my daughter when she gets older (she’s 3 right now). It’s relatable, covers some tough topics without being dreary which helps with talking points with kids, and is sweet. I loved getting glimpses of Mia. The secondary cast of characters is colorful and diverse. And of course, there’s always Grandmeré causing wince inducing drama.

If you’re a fan of this genre or if you have middle school girls, I definitely recommend this book and series.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader's copy of this book.
