Long commercial for D&D

It's a shame they had to work with the Wizards of the Coast on this. It seems to have forced it to be nothing but an ectremely long infomercial for D&D 5e.
The adult humor was neutered, not at all like a Rick and Morty cartoon. "But wait! That's not all!"
I guess it would be fine for a Rick and Morty fan who doesn't know much about role play tabletop games. It might sell them on 5e and thats a pretty easy intro to tabletop gaming, i guess. But anyone already familiar will read this and feel like it's mansplaining RPGs.
The beauty of a Rick and Morty story is knowing it will take a completely unexpected turn. But not this. I paid nearly $15 for a commercial from word one to the extremely predictable, telegraphed conclusion.

Just because two things are awesome doesnt mean they go well together

One giant advertisement for 5th ed. I like DnD and Rick and Morty but this was the worst kind of sell-out pandering. They forgot to put in anything remotely funny or amusing. The plot is cringy and consist of shoehorning the characters into talking about the game.

Overall, I found this derivative and tone deaf to the target audience. Most people who would buy this would already know at least a little bit about DnD. Explaining to them how the game works through boring, unfunny exposition is not necessary. And if they DON'T know whats going on, a quick websearch would explain it far better than this comic.

Great book, with minor character flaw.

I very much enjoy both Rick and Morty and D&D, and this comic hits a lot of the right buttons. The art is great. Having all the alternate covers (which this 4 part comic has a ton of alternates) and character stat sheets included is greatly appreciated. My only issue is some characterization of Rick that doesn't feel very true to his character, but even that doesn't feel like enough to knock off a star. Would definitely continue reading if they ever decided to continue with this crossover.

Great Read Designed Specifically for your Predictable Good Taste Brain

This is what happens when the algorithms of our overlords seek to maximize profits by seeing the overlap in audiences and fans of intellectual property and mash them together.

Do you like DnD? Do you like Rick & Morty? Do you like comics?

Of course you do, or you would have never seen this in your recommendation list.

Its a fun self-contained story that one could see as a storyboard for an episode of the show. If this popped up in any feed for you, buy it, the overlords know you'll love it!

My first graphic novel did not disappoint! All the magic of Rick and Morty in comic form!

THIS. WAS. SO. FUN.

This was one of my first graphic novels, I've read the first two compendiums of The Walking Dead but it's probably been 8 or 9 years since then. I happened to see this while browsing through Barnes & Noble and absolutely had to have it! Not only do I love Rick and Morty but I also love Patrick Rothfuss! (even though weirdly I haven't read his books yet? haha I think it's because I also follow him on Twitter and he's hilarious). Anyways, I saw the Barnes & Noble exclusive edition that has an introduction from Rothfuss plus a full sized removable poster! And the cover is a shiny pretty gold and like, I just couldn't say no.

In terms of Rick and Morty all of the character arcs were entirely on point and I loved it so much. Rick was drunk and crazy as ever, plus there was a considerable amount of time he spent brooding and moping around and it was just too funny. Morty was his laughable self and always found himself getting into some kind of trouble because of Rick. This story paired up with Dungeons and Dragons was AMAZING. I can't speak to how well D&D was portrayed because I've never played it, but I thought it was a good story! I know some of the basics and it seemed pretty on par with what I'm familiar with.

The artwork in this graphic novel was NEXT LEVEL. Seriously I was so impressed. It took me forever to finish this because I was so stuck on every panel looking at the beautiful artwork. It also helped that there was a full size pull out poster that I plan on hanging up in new library when I move in June. And throughout the novel there was full page artwork by several different artists was nothing short of STUNNING. I want them all in giant posters!

I 100% plan on getting the rest of the Rick and Morty graphic novels and hope to expand into others as well!

Mashup

I enjoy the Rick and Morty seasons, and roleplayed through AD&D 2nd edition. I've been tempted by previous comics, and by various board games with Rick and Morty, but none appealed. Then I discovered that there is going to be a roleplaying game released soon - preordered. We'll see how that is, but I took a preview of this comic, and this time took the plunge. I like that it's set at that time when Jerry is not living with the rest, as I'm not a fan of his - as was the intention. I like the progress of the story, the rise and fall of Rick, Jerry, and Summer - who, after Rick, is my favorite. Morty and Beth get their moments. So, the comic feels faithful to the characters I feel I know from the episodes. I'm actually interested in going back now and trying the other comics, just to see if they are this well written. The highlight is that moment Jerry is explaining where he and Rick are different, a well earned moment. As for the D&D side of things, I find the current recasting of all the 2nd edition AD&D stuff into the new iterations funny more than anything. The references to them in the comic brought smiles to my face, because I recall the originals. This medium is broad enough from the roleplaying products that I don't think it matter whether the reader is newer or older to those references. I enjoyed picking out the spoken and visual references - and I laughed outright at the inclusion of the old animated series. As I have those on DVD, I can very well imagine an actual animated mashup. And, yes, the Dungeon Master can suck it. So, to sum up, a solid comic that I devoured in one sitting. I'm looking forward to the second. Ehy only 4 stars? The same reason I've hesitated buying previous comics: The censorship. Swear, damn it. Still, the story, the crossover, the characters are all good. I am glad to have finally taken the plunge into the comics with this one.

The book only! This is a book that is apart of the set.

[[VIDEOID:df5652ed41384e2996a2bd3174401ef8]] This is the book only and not the entire set.
I made this mistake, now I need to go get the set. I was able to connect d&d Beyond app to the Rick and morty d&d game but there are still things missing like the monster guide, the dm insider, the dice set, the campaign and everything that is needed to play the game. This is just the comic book. It’s still fun to read, but it’s best just to get the set.
However if you are needing a replacement of the original book (that comes in the set.) then this is perfect. Very nicely done and put together. There are some really nice art work at the back that will help players visualize what they are going through/facing.
The bind of the book creased very easily after handling very minimally. You need to bend the pages back a bit to fully read the modifiers on the character sheets. However, you can look them up online to protect the book. Seasonal D&D’ers may find this a bit boring but it’s worth getting into with players you’re easing into the D&D world. I’m using his likeness of Rick and morty to blend into the introduction of D&D.

Starts rough, gets gud.

Okay, so, did a review after the first part of the book, and was ready to give it one stat, but get past that, it just keeps getting better and better if you're a classic fan of Dungeons and dragons.
