although those things are good and necessary

Rest always seems far off or non-existent, especially in the throes of raising five young children. Shelly's real life examples and lived out practices of Sabbath keeping make finding rest possible. Not just for the sake of getting sleep or being recharged, although those things are good and necessary. What I have taken away from this book is a shift in perspective. Rest is not just for my refreshment. True rest, true Sabbath, is for the purpose of knowing God, listening to His voice, and planning for times to basque in His presence. The ideas and thoughts expounded on in this book have provided me with a lot to think through as I ponder what steps to take in finding biblical rhythms of rest.

A must read

I loved this book. It wasn't fast paced and that's part of its beauty. It was a slow and restful walk with a good friend, filled with words that wove their way into my bones. How I approach each day has been changed by the ideas Shelly shares so beautifully. If you need a rest, I recommend this gem. I will be sending copies to a few friends.

Get your Sabbath on!

Having barely begun to adopt some Sabbath practices (no tech and no laundry on Sundays for starters), I found so much encouragement and practical application in this soon-to-be-released book. If you already practice Sabbath, if you want to start, if you fear it will be to hard to implement, this book was written for you. No quick fixes, no one-size-fits-all solutions, just highly adaptable possibilities woven into a very personal telling of keeping Sabbath in a season of great uncertainty. Full disclosure: I received a free advanced reader copy through Shelly Miller's Sabbath Society.

A breath of fresh air!

We need a day set apart from all the others, different in their routine. We desperately require down time, a few hours each week with limited or no stress.

In her book, Rhythms of Rest: Finding the Spirit of Sabbath in a Busy World, Shelly Miller shares practical and wise ways by which we all can make room in our busy lives for Sabbath. But she maintains that it will be a deliberate choice we make, as we fight against the busyness which plagues our world. It will not come easily or without a battle.

Rhythms of Rest is a journey towards rest as Shelly shares personally from her own life, and the lives of others, how to implement Sabbath into our lives. Her words are like a breath of fresh air and will stir your soul to find rest in our God who is longing to spend time with each of us.

** In exchange for my honest review, I was given an electronic copy of the book. It was my privilege and joy to read every word as it enriched my life and it will surely do so for you.

A Breath of Fresh Air

Rest is something that eludes us in this busy culture. We wear busy as a badge of honor and neglect what our soul and body needs most in hopes of pleasing more, achieving more. In Rhythms of Rest, Shelly Miller talks about the life-giving essence of Sabbath without being legalistic. Not only does she tell us what the Bible says about it but shares real life experiences of the #SabbathSociety community along with practical suggestions for removing the obstacles that prevent us from keeping this day set apart.

The under current of the book is Shelly’s personal story of how Sabbath helped her and her family weathered a season of uncertainty. You won’t feel judgment when reading this book but rather a progressive awakening to importance of consistent and intentional rest. It is a breath of fresh air amid a culture that often focuses on how to do more and be more.

Whether observing Sabbath is a new adventure or established ritual for you, this book will encourage you set aside self-sufficiency and lean into a God who has given us the gift of rest.

So good ...

This book put powerful words to the phrase that we hear often - "take a breath". There is explanation of various ways that we can rest - even in this world of chaos. It is possible! I bought multiple copies of this book to give as Christmas gifts - 2018. Excellent book!

Like A Cool Drink of Water on a Hot Day

Reading Shelly Miller's book Rhythms of Rest was like drinking a talk class of cold water on a hot day. I just drank it in word by word and page by page. I felt a deep connection not only to the topic, but to the author (I felt like we were friends by the end of the book), and to the others who follow her "Sabbath Society" blog. This book is not just for busy people and tired people - it's applicable to us all.

Profound Impact!

This book has had a profound impact on my life. I'm still learning how to practice Sabbath as a way of life. Slowing down the "carousel of life" has been good for me. I have had more clarity in thought, not been as anxious, and been more mindful of my relationships with those around me. I highly recommend this book!

it sounded like something I'd like to try reading

For many years, intentional living has been our goal as a family. I read a variety of blogs and other resources that support this type of thoughtful living and decision making. I am not a big reader of nonfiction books, but when Rhythms of Rest by Shelly Miller showed up in my inbox, it sounded like something I'd like to try reading. I discovered several years ago that I am what is known as a "highly sensitive person" and my daughter is highly sensitive as well. Having opportunities to rest and recharge as well as good overall routines in place is important to both of us. During the first half of this school year (when I started this book), we were in a place of just being too busy and I was feeling the strain of that.

Enter Rhythms of Rest. The focus of the book is delving into what the Sabbath is and how we can make it a reality in our daily lives. In addition, the book discusses the benefits of Sabbath keeping and what a gift from God the concept and practice of Sabbath is. As a result of reading this book, we have made some adjustments to our Sunday routines. As church musicians, my husband and I work on Sundays, so we needed some practical steps to find rest on Sundays after our responsibilities were complete. This book is full of stories and ideas that will help anyone to find opportunities for Sabbath rest whenever they can find it. It's not just limited to Sundays. I'm looking forward to receiving the weekly "Sabbath Society" emails to keep our forward progress going in this area.

I received this book from Bethany House in exchange for this review; all opinions are my own.

Finding the Sabbath in a busy world

At first, I thought Shelly Miller's book, "Rhythm of Rest", about the Sabbath was going to about keeping the Sabbath because it is a requirement and list the blessings associated with it and be filled with testimonies of people who just confirmed her ideas about the Sabbath. But.it's.not. Thank goodness.

Instead of being legalistic, Miller's book talks about ways to be intentional about rest, how to tune out distractions and how time with family and friends can be Sabbath experiences. I was so encouraged by this book. The pure fact that any day can be our Sabbath and we are not locked in to Sundays was completely refreshing. Not only that but Sabbath is not about doing nothing but about not doing those things that take you away from the rhythm of rest.

If you are tired and weary and longing for rest, and don't know how to experience Sabbath, start with reading "Rhythms of Rest". You'll be glad you did.
