Description

“Hilarious and Heartbreaking. Comedy shouldn’t take courage, but it made an exception for Bassem.” — Jon Stewart “A smart, refreshing and hilariously funny account.” — Salon.com “An entertaining and eminently readable book about a Middle Eastern country written for Americans. If you have been bluffing your way through political conversations pretending to know the differences between Islamists and secular Muslims, Youssef’s book is an easy, painless way to rectify that error.” — The Ringer If you want to understand the Arab Spring-even though it was really the African Spring, set off by a ‘small puny motherfucking country called Tunisia’-then this odd book is just the guide. — Kirkus Reviews How does one start a revolution? With a microphone, a joke, and persistence, of course! Bassem Youssef, a satirist who rose to fame in the middle of the Egyptian Revolution with his incendiary brand of comedy and his knack for unabashedly mocking dictators, has been called the “Jon Stewart of Egypt.” Once a heart surgeon who filmed YouTube skits in the laundry room of his home, he eventually grew to become one of the most recognizable television hosts in Egyptian history, and his show became the most popular TV program in Egypt, much to the ire of the TV anchors, government officials, and military personnel who tried desperately to shut it down. So potent were Youssef’s skits, jokes, and commentary that he was accused of insulting the Egyptian presidency, and even Islam itself, leading to a warrant in 2013 for his arrest. Despite turning himself in, Youssef was interrogated for six hours before being released on bail, which prompted his idol—Mr. Jon Stewart himself—to issue a statement on his behalf in an episode of The Daily Show . Though Youssef’s case was eventually dismissed, his TV show was terminated, and he found himself fleeing Egypt in fear for his life. In Revolution for Dummies , Youssef proudly and hysterically riffs on the hypocrisy, instability, and corruption that manifested in Egyptian politics: everything from how the government tried to cover up the violent clashes in Tahrir Square to how the military announced they had created the world’s first AIDS machine that could cure anyone of the disease to how officials were convinced Youssef was a CIA operative recruited by Jon Stewart, on a secret mission to bring down the country through sarcasm. (Yes, it gets that insane.) This is the version of the Arab Spring you’ve never heard, the one that doesn’t get glossed over by the media’s attempt to optimistically show promise of progress after revolution. This is the real story of guts and glory, and of how jokes are often mightier than the sword. Bassem Youssef was the host of Albernameg , the first-of-its-kind political satire showin the Middle East from 2011 until the show's termination by the Egyptian government in 2014. Youssef is currently the host of The Democracy Handbook , a digital series with Fusion TV, and now lives in the United States. Read more

This is fantastic! I loved how he was telling the story ...

This is fantastic! I loved how he was telling the story of the Arab Spring through his own incredible rise. This man started a show in his laundry room that ended up becoming the biggest show in Egyptian history and when he spoke out about his government, he felt threatened and fled the country. We should all read this and be inspired to speak up when we feel it necessary!

Brilliant and insightful and sarcastic look at the events in Cairo surrounding the Arab Spring

I learned salsa, meringue, and bachata dancing from Bassem in Cairo from 1999-2003. Bassem was a technician when it came to the Latin dance moves. He studied it with the precision of a surgeon. Comically, when the local media wanted to do a story on the budding dance scene, Bassem refused to be interviewed saying he didn't want him mom to know he was dancing. Now, the whole world knows he loves Latin music and dancing and he posts videos online of such "lewd" dancing with his lovely wife.

However, we met a few times outside of salsa to discuss politics and nonsense. I had a bachelor's degree in sociology and was attending the master's program at the American University in Cairo for Cultural Anthropology. I always found his insights to be compelling.

This book is a brilliant and insightful and sarcastic look at the events in Cairo surrounding the Arab Spring.

I find it interesting when he talks about people being disappointed at the **failure** of the Egyptian revolution or revolt or whatever it's called. Because my husband is from Bejing, China, I've met a lot of Chinese. I've heard more than one say, they were praying for the day they wake up the news says China had a coup and now it's a democratic country. This, like the expectation that Egypt could become a fully mature democracy overnight, is absurd.

To the naive Chinese, I always say, it takes decades, even centuries to make a mature democracy and as far as I can see, China is actually moving down that path. The only thing you'll get if you have a Chinese coup while we sleep is the markets will tank and most probably a global recession. Be careful what you ask for.

As for Egypt, I'm not yet finished hoping they fill a way to peace and prosperity.

If you're interested, you should not only read this book, but also watch [[ASIN:B000YMDIZS The Yacoubian Building]]

Here's to the Pharaohs, Nubians, Copts, to the mother of earth, Umal dunya, to the Middle East's great music and movie producer, to a major center if not THE major center of Islamic thought and a dozen other realities that Egypt, a country the size of the state of Arizona, manages to fit into its complex, intricate tapestry of humanity.

Bassem has done them proud.

Disgusting

This writer is one mixed up person. Oh no, I take that back. He is a typical liberal, who takes the facts and reverses them. Every dam thing he said about Pres Trump and his supporters is ACTUALLY TRUE about LIBERALS. Don't object, ask a question, or make a comment that disagrees with them or you are every name in the book, it goes on CONSTANTLY. If we don't want our country INVADED by terrorists who like to saw off heads we are racist! If we are tired of supporting others who INVADE our country, there's something wrong with us. THAT IS LIBERAL THINKING. This guy disgusts me. I got the book from the library and sure wouldn't pay a dime for it!
