Description

''Aveyard weaves a compelling new world, and Mare and the two men in her life evolve intriguingly as class tension rises. Revolution supersedes romance, setting the stage for action-packed surprises. An inventive, character-driven twist breathes new life into tired fantasy trends.'' -- Kirkus ''A wonderful mash up of Ancient Rome and Marie Antoinette with a dash of Catherine Fisher's Incarceron and Ridley Scott's Gladiator , not to mention some of Marvel Comic's box of tricks...Exciting and original.'' --Sam Hawksmoor, author of the 'Repossession' trilogy ''The story has touches of the usual dystopian suspects. However, it's formulaic elements are far outweighed by the breakneck pace and engaging characters. There's a bit of teen romance, but luckily the characters are self-aware enough to realize its frivolity among the story's more important plot points. A solid debut from Aveyard and a welcome addition to the plethora of speculative teen lit.'' -- Library Journal ''First-time author Aveyard has created a volatile world with a dynamic heroine, and while there are moments of romance, they refreshingly take a backseat to the action. Anticipation is already high for this debut, and with the movie rights already acquired and two sequels to come, it will likely only grow.'' -- Booklist '' Red Queen is a clever blend of 'The Hunger Games, The Selection, Graceling' and 'Divergent'.'' -- Starburst Victoria Aveyard was born and raised in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, a small town known only for the worst traffic rotary in the continental United States. She moved to Los Angeles to earn a BFA in screenwriting at the University of Southern California, and stayed there despite the lack of seasons. She is currently an author and screenwriter, using her career as an excuse to read too many books and watch too many movies.

Features & Highlights

  • [Young Adult Fiction (Ages 12-17)][Read by Amanda Dolan] From debut author Victoria Aveyard comes a lush, vivid fantasy series where loyalty and desire can tear you apart - and the only certainty is betrayal. Mare Barrow's world is divided by blood - those with red and those with silver. Mare and her family are lowly Reds, destined to serve the Silver elite whose supernatural abilities make them nearly gods. Mare steals what she can to help her family survive, but when her best friend is conscripted into the army, she gambles everything to win his freedom. A twist of fate leads her to the royal palace, where, in front of the king and all his nobles, she discovers a power of her own - an ability she didn't know she had. Except … her blood is Red. To hide this impossibility, the king forces her into the role of a lost Silver princess and betroths her to one of his own sons. As Mare is drawn further into the Silver world, she risks her new position to aid the Scarlet Guard - the leaders of a Red rebellion. Her actions put into motion a deadly and violent dance, pitting prince against prince - and Mare against her own heart.

A Fast Paced, Good Read

Red Queen features a fast paced plot within a science fiction, dystopian framework. With some similarities to Red Rising, with regards to the caste system and a main character who is unique in some way, this book has enough differences that I eagerly await reading book two. Mare Barrow's strength, intelligence, and ability to keep her eyes focused squarely on the larger picture make her the type of character that readers will enjoy getting to know. With many YA books finding their way into Hollywood, I would not be surprised to see Red Queen joining their ranks. This book would lend itself well to a visual form, as the characters and the world are fully developed. Readers who enjoy YA science fiction and dystopian will like Red Queen, as it is a well imagined introduction to a new series.
