Description

About the Author Richard T. Schaefer grew up in Chicago at a time when neighborhoods were going through transitions in ethnic and racial composition. He found himself increasingly intrigued by what was happening, how people were reacting, and how these changes were affecting neighborhoods and people’s jobs. In high school, he took a course in sociology. His interest in social issues caused him to gravitate to more sociology courses at Northwestern University, where he eventually received a B.A. in sociology. This interest led him to obtain his M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago. Dr. Schaefer’s continuing interest in race relations led him to write his master’s thesis on the membership of the Ku Klux Klan and his doctoral thesis on racial prejudice and race relations in Great Britain. He has taught sociology and courses on multiculturalism for 30 years. He has been invited to give special presentations to students and faculty on racial and ethnic diversity in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas. Schaefer is the general editor of the three-volume Encyclopedia of Race, Ethnicity, and Society (2008). He is also the author of introductory sociology books with McGraw-Hill. Schaefer coauthored with William Zellner the ninth edition of Extraordinary Groups (2011). He served as president of the Midwest Sociological Society from 1994 to 1995. In recognition of his achievements in undergraduate teaching, he was named Vincent de Paul Professor of Sociology in 2004.

I wanted to like it...

I'm not sure if it deserves one star or two. This book is required for one of my classes that I decided to take to help develop my self toward the hardships endured by minoritys over the past hundred years. I have to admit however that it did not take long for me to really start hating this book, despite all of my efforts not to and to take it as objective. It is in my opinion however not objective and feels very much like cherry picked information. There have been examples and quotes from the book that I have to bite on my fingers while doing homework not to point out glaring problems with, and I just pretend to take it as fact because I don't want a bad grade just because I disagree. And that right there is a good example of the problems with the book, yes minorities have been oppressed by white people and even men in many cases, that being said however the book makes it very clear that it is not possible for a minority to be racist or prejudice against a 'white' person (this is stated within the first 2 chapters), yet I fear to state my opinion in a college class because my grade as well as my integrity will suffer immensely. I would not consider myself racist, sexist, or prejudice but I am honest enough with myself to feel I could benefit by taking this class and reading this book. This book has made me loose respect for sociology. I will stick with my STEM major where facts are actually fact.

I wish my class required a better book to learn from

I think this book is simplistic and bland in content. It contains many repeated errors in grammar and indexing. I wish my class required a better book to learn from, but it is what it is and I will get an A anyway.

Rent Textbooks not buy

I had to get this book for a course and even though I did not use it a lot. I was able to still get a lot of information from it and it came in early.

Run-of-the-Mill PC textbook with a really weird cover. Typo-free, but boring.

This book is reasonably well-written and colorful. While the front cover looks absolutely ridiculous, the text is edited fairly well and largely free of noteworthy typos, especially compared to other textbooks that I've owned over the years. This was my first time renting a book, mainly because I didn't want to spend a penny more on what amounts to PC propaganda than was absolutely necessary. Even the rental price on this was highway robbery, but it's better than buying and risking not making the money back later on.

In a nutshell, the book is written as though the authors had about 6 chapters worth of content that they needed to spread into almost three times as much textbook, so there's a lot of boring detail, repetition, and of course, political correctness (white inferiority, feminism, etc.). Much of the book goes well off the beaten path of the subject matter promised by the title, mainly because there just isn't that much to write on the topic, so the only way to make this thing long enough to actually be a textbook was to add a metric ton of filler.

If the mandatory PC class that you find yourself in requires this book, just suck it up and pay the unreasonably high rental fee or gamble on being able to make your money back when you sell it. It's not a great book, but it's colorful, well-organized, and free of typos, so you have to take the good with the bad.
