Description

PROFESSIONAL STONESETTING You and I both know that normally I d start right off here with some delicious or seductive tool, but on this occasion, I can honestly say that Alan Revere s brand-new Professional Stonesetting: A Contemporary Guide to Traditional Setting Techniques is the most desirable object to cross my studio threshold in at least six months, and it isn t even made of steel. This book is a pivotally important reference for anyone intending to set stones xa0no matter what level maker they may be or think they are. First off, I love the book because it follows the reliable, traditional method for jewelers educaton that I know works: you start with easy techniques, master them, and progress to more difficult ones. Sure, there is a time and place for instant gratification jewelry making, but stone setting isn t it. For setting, you owe it to yourself to start at the beginning, unlearn what you think you know, do each exercise as presented and, only if you did well, move on the the next one. Alan helps you follow this parth by presenting 21 classic settings from thin and medium bezels, pavé, and channels, for all the classic stone shapes, with clear, close-up photos and supporting diagrams of the critical steps. With my first look, I found the solution to one stone setting issue I have struggled with forever clean corners on square settings so, thank you Alan Revere and Tim McCreight and his Brynmorgen Press for a brilliant, wonderful, essential reference. An jeweler must, must, must, own and use this book. Period. Helen I. Driggs Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist, August 2017 --Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist, August 2017 Alan Revere holds a unique position in the jewelry community, with one foot firmly planted as a master goldsmith and award-winning designer and the other as one of the country s most prominent jewelry educators. After earning degrees in both psychology and sculpture, Revere s passion led him to Germany, where he trained under some of the 20th century s most celebrated goldsmiths and designers. Returning to California with skills rarely taught in the United States, Mr. Revere was asked to share what he had learned with other jewelers and students. In 1979, he founded the Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts in San Francisco, now one of the country s foremost jewelry training centers. Alan Revere is past president of the American Jewelry Design Council and founder of the Contemporary Jewelry Design Group. In addition to designing and selling thousands of pieces of jewelry, Mr. Revere has created instructional books, articles and videos for jewelry makers. It is no wonder that Alan Revere has been called, A master s master.

A Great Companion to Other Setting Books.

Alan Revere always provides great information. This book continues that tradition. A set of useful skills are set out. This book complements a couple other books I have on this subject.

Essential next step in jewelry making

This a one of those books you need to get. The thing to know is learn the basics before you move onto this level. The books are detailed and amazing, but I would start with a Jinx Mc Garth and work up to the genius, meticulous Alan. I think if I had started here it may have been too intimidating; however, I love the book and the projects especially since I have a good foundation to work from.

The Perfect Companion to "Professional Jewelry Making"

An excellent book that makes for a perfect companion to my copy of "Professional Jewelry Making", also by Alan Revere. I am actually still going through the book, but so far the content and instruction is on par with other books by Alan Revere, so I am quite pleased with this book, too! Thank you!!

Very handy and good explanation

This is a very useful book on stone setting, Very good explanation with appropriate pictures. I have a few books and I found this one the most helpful. I saw a few articles in Stuller.com written by Alan Revere and I really liked the way he is explaining things and when I learned he had books written - I ordered them. Good choice!

Pretty good book

Revere is a good teacher and it comes across in the book.
My only complaint is that the lessons all use commercial settings from Stuller
That's not a terrible thing, but I would have preferred if he used more generic settings.
Still, it's a good book, and I'm not sorry I bought it, it's just not my favorite.

This book is definitely aimed at someone with some exeprience - and the instructions (as in Professional Goldsmithing) assume you have the tool required to finish the step.

I am looking forward to trying the projects in this book when I have finished with the Professional Goldsmithing book as the next progression.

Not bad, but ...

A quarter of the book is about the tools you need. The rest are basic tutorials. The tutorials are well made. Nothing very advanced but if I were a beginner I would certainly learn a few things.

Great Fundamentals

I have several of Alan Revere's books and they are all great. This book takes you from the very beginning, starting with the tools you will need, where to get them or how to make them yourself and shows you the basic techniques for setting different types of stones in different types of pieces. The pictures do a great job showing the techniques and the descriptions are very precise, explaining how to perform each step and why.
