Potential is there, but not for this book

I really wanted to like this book because I think the premise is fun and has potential. However, there are some serious issues. I am all for letting your world unfold over the course of a book, or even series of books. This book had no world building at all, though. Is that because this is not set in an alternate world or because the author is just lazy? Well, I'm thinking lazy. Why? Because there isn't a whole lot of character development either. Characters should be set in some context, have a past, some motivations other than sex... There is nothing here. You don't have ANY past information for the female protagonist at all. She just shows up and randomly has some psy ability mid-book. The dialogue is stilted and unoriginal. The plot hardly moves and broadcasted the twist so loudly that I could hear it a mile off. There is no subtlety to the relationships, just a wham, bam, you're reading this book for the sex, ma'am. Overall, I'd say this is a fun concept poorly executed.

EXCELLENT START OF AN AMAZING NEW SERIES!!

Jo Davis is one of my favorite authors. I absolutely LOVED her FIREFIGHTERS OF STATION FIVE series and I couldn't wait to get my hands on Primal Law and of course, she did not disappoint. Her first Paranormal Romance written under her pseudonym, J.D. Tyler, was just as amazing as the rest of her books. Primal Law, the first book in the new Alpha Pack series had a great plot line, great characters and of course smokin' hot love scenes.

Jaxon Law is man scorned by betrayal and weighed down by the guilt of the death of his team mates and leader. He does not trust anyone outside his brothers, the Alpha Pack and is determined never to mate and trust a woman again.

Kira is a scientist working at New Life Technology. While employed, she starts to notice the suspicious behaviors of her employers and starts snooping around. She steals small canisters of what seems to be of skin samples that she believes and hopes will reveal the horrible secret she feels her employer is hiding and gets chased out side and then caught.

Enter Jax and the Alpha Pack team to the rescue. Jaxon Law (former Navy SEAL) is a Grey Wolf, RetroCog and Time-Bender. Jax hears Kira's screams and immediately responds. He sees 2 men attacking her and his wolf goes crazy. Although he has no idea why his wolf and he are taking the attack so personal, he shifts to wolf and kills both men. Jax then shifts back to man in front of Kira and they take her back to the Alpha Pack headquarters to figure out who is trying to kill her and why, as well as make sure she won't reveal their secrets.

Jax and Kira have an instant attraction to one another. Jax is scared to put his faith and trust into another woman after the last woman he thought he loved was responsible for trapping Jax and the Alpha Pack and killing 4 of the team members while the others struggled and fought for their lives.

Kira is thrust into a world she never could have imagined existed. She discovers she is Jax's mate and does not want to me mated because it's their fate. She wants to be mated because they love each other.

I really loved how they worked at their relationship and it wasn't instant love. They learned to trust in each other and then eventually fell in love.

I also fell in love with all of the men from Alpha Pack.

Nick Westfall - The new Team Leader of Alpha Pack is a White Wolf, Empath and PreCog. Nick carries the burden of knowing the fates of his men, yet because of a tragic past mistake he won't interfere with destiny or free will.

Aric Savage - Red Wolf, Firestarter and Telekinetic. Aric harbors a terrible resentment of his shifting and Psy abilities, and sees them as a curse.

Kalen Black - is the newest and youngest member of the Alpha Pack. Black Panther, Sorcerer and Necromancer and the only known shifter of his kind.

"Hammer" - Grey Wolf, Tracer--Only Nick knows the mysterious giant's real name.

Zander Cole - Black Wolf and Healer--Zander nearly killed himself trying to save his teammates in the aftermath of the Noble massacre. Of all the survivors, he's the one not dealing with the tragedy and is a cause for grave worry among the others.

Ryon Hunter - Silver Wolf, Channeler and Telepath--Ryon is an original team member whose "sixth sense" gives the catch-phrase "I see dead people" a whole new meaning.

Everyone one of these men steals your heart and leaves you anticipating his book. Next up is a novella on Kalen Black and then Aric Savage's book will be released in April.

So, all in all......I LOVED this book and it was an excellent start to a great new series.

Amazed at the high review score.

I love paranormal stories. Paranormal romance, paranormal mystery, urban fantasy.... And shifters are my favorites. With all the high scores for this entire series I thought this one would be an easy win. Not so much.

The story has promise. Unfortunately the author's writing skills were not sufficient to the task.

The writing is disjointed, the pacing is terrible, and there is no character development (she tries with the heroine, but it's just painful) or (especially) any world building. And supernatural skills are a complete substitute for common sense and normal human reactions.

Kira is a researcher who steals from her employer and is on the run. She's then caught and in the middle of her capture she raises a huge fuss attacking her captors and is saved by Jax. Jax hears Kira in danger. It triggers some kind of strong reaction in him. And he slaughters two people to save Kira. He's a soldier and could easily have subdued the men who had her without killing them. But for this author an uber alpha apparently doesn't think first, he just slaughters. Then he magically deduces that she's a thief. And knowing nothing else about her decides that he has to take her to their super secret government mountain hide out. Next thing you know, she's hired as staff at this hide-out and given access to dangerous prisoners and given carte blanche on dealing with them. Why? Because the boss of the hideout is a pre-cog. The VERY NEXT DAY see Kira approaching feral creatures who have been captured and, within 5 minutes of meeting with them, turning them into domesticated guests at what is rapidly becoming a half way house for supernatural misfits in the mountains. Oh yeah. And by the way... it turns out Kira has supernatural skills of her own. That's why she can do all this stuff!! OF COURSE!

Kira has no real surprise or reaction to the revelation that monsters and creatures that go bump in the night exist. Oh, she remarks on it. But 5 minutes later she's cool with it all and wants to join the team and save the monsters in lock up. As for the hero, he was underwhelming to say the least. His chief qualification appears to be his ability to go back in time and fix problems, a rather obvious and clumsy plot device.

So why two stars? Well, I finished it. And I am intersted enough in resolving the cliff hanger ending that I MIGHT buy the next book (but it is doubtful). So that's two stars right there.

Overall, I can only imagine most of the reviews are written by the author's fan club or by people who have never read good paranormal romance.

If you do want good paranormal romance I recommend:
Larrisa Ione's: Deamonica Series.
Sydney Croft's: ACRO Series
Kresley Cole's: Immortals After Dark

Promising start to a new series

Excellent start to a new series. Lots of fun and pretty hot sex scenes. I liked the casual scenes between the characters and the way that other males were introduced. I am waiting in anticipation for the next in the series about Aric.

Great start to new series

Loved Jo Davis Fireman series so thought I would try her new paranormal romance series under her alternate pseudonym JD Tyler.. The book is about a bunch of top secret guys who are shifters and also have some form of PreCog or RetroCog ability, the group is run by a former Navy SEALS (who some of these guys also used to be). They use there Psy and shifting abilities to find and destroy lethal humans and non-human predators. The author again brings alot humor between the group of men. I thought the book did a farely good job at introducing you to the series during the first two chapters. I didnt feel like I was overloaded with information and I understood the concept the author was trying to get across. I also liked that all the different species they captured or took in (there is a blue Fae with wings) were all hot looking as men. Hey nothing wrong with making all of your men hot in a book :)

Bland and boring characters and predictable plotlines

Did not finish. Your typical run of the mill shifter romance. Bland and boring characters and predictable plotlines.

Great Start to a New Series

I'm usually not excited to try new authors, but I'm glad I did this one. I really liked the book and the characters. Tyler has built a nice world around the characters. I especially liked how new characters were added as the story went along. Very interesting. The book certainly held my interest and I will be buying the next book in the series. This seems like a promising new series.

It was a refreshing change in author.

I really enjoyed this book. It was very related to the Ghostwalker series by C Feehann "By the way, will she EVER put out another book in that series?". Anyway, the cons of this novel were that there is a great goup of people that are already formed, work well together, and are in control of their operation. The pros? This book was written in such simple manner I was able to read it in 1 evening. It was sooo simple, sometimes just downright stupid because things are soooo easy to know what was happening. BUT, I am giving it 4 stars fo the quality of witing, interesting plot, and a prediction a better sequel.
