Features & Highlights

  • Love can be the greatest possession. Brianna Lindsay's grip on the inheritance that is rightly hers hangs by a thread. If the town finds out her father has died, Brianna will be forced into marriage with her loathsome cousin, Lord Robert, and will lose all of Edzell Castle and its lands. To protect her home, she'll have to trust a complete stranger, a brooding Highland barbarian who sweeps into Edzell with a small retinue and insists on replacing her Captain of the Guard. He proves his worth by defeating her men and she has no choice but to accept his offer. Though his motives are suspect, Colin MacKinnon has nobility in his blood and good intentions in coming to Edzell. He seeks his own kingdom, one to rival his father's, and sets out to conquer Brianna in the best way he knows how―with seduction. Brianna never thought of all the wealth she protects, the one thing she has left completely vulnerable is her heart. Colin never thought that of everything he stands to achieve, he might have to face the unexpected pain of loss. Together, they must navigate a treacherous world of spies and intrigue, of legacy and fidelity, of love and betrayal, to find what is truly worth possessing.

Simply loved it!!!

**I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review**

This is my first book by Madeline Martin and it won't be my last. I'll be definitely putting her on my stalker list. ^_^

We meet Brianna, a young woman whose had a huge weight put on her shoulders, her father has passed away and she needs to keep it secret for a time so she's not forced to marry her vile cousin (I truly detested this cousin, he's one that'll make your skin crawl. *shivers*)

Then out of nowhere a handsome highlander comes to her rescue, he claims he can protect her and her kingdom from any danger that may arise. Can she trust him?

Brianna and Colin had a strong chemistry, the room just seemed to zing when they were both together. I felt their connection right off the bat, it certainly got hot in my house....quite a bit. Haha!! ^_^

Her lashes swept across her rosy cheeks. He bent over her, nuzzling her ear, and whispered in Gaelic. "Nuair a bhios sinn caenailite, chuiridh mi mo theanga far an robh mo mheoir." She stiffened beneath his fingertips. When we wed, I cannot wait to slide my tongue where my fingers have been.

See???? holy mother of...........*melts to the floor* Colin is a keeper!! Yep, just got hot in here again haha!

I seriously get weak in the knees for highlanders.

Madeline has written a story full of suspense, passion, action, secrets & hardship. A story with wonderfully unique characters and vivid Scotland lands. I was swept away to the highlands and didn't want to come back to reality.

I recommend this book to all the historical romance lovers and anyone looking for something a little different from their usual reads. ^_^

Bernard was like Brianna’s father and with the Earl also dying it ...

Brianna Lindsay was the lady of the castle but few knew her father the Earl was dead and that is how she planned to keep it awhile longer. Brianna had sent her Master of The Guard - Bernard to deliver a letter to Parliament but Bernard was returned to Brianna dying. Bernard was like Brianna’s father and with the Earl also dying it was if Brianna lost two fathers: one who truly loved her and her biological father. Colin had brought Bernard back to the castle. Colin also declares to his friend Alec one day the castle and it’s land would be his. Colin was a Highlander but he obviously had money. Brianna felt Highlanders could not be trusted. Colin told Brianna he feared she was in danger. Colin became Brianna’s Captain Of The Guards as her soldiers were not trained well enough to defend the castle. Brianna doesn’t want to marry her evil cousin Lord Robert. Colin hopes to marry Brianna himself and prove to his father he was a leader. Brianna wanted to to do as she wants and make her own decisions. But she also needs protection from Robert and her uncle. Colin is willing to step up and marry Brianna even if the reasoning is a little different than Brianna thinks.
I enjoyed reading this story. It had a good plot. I enjoyed the characters at first I wasn’t to happy that Colin was willing to use Brianna to prove himself to his father but that changes as the story goes on. I like the ins and outs of this story and I recommend.

This is the story of Brianna who conceals her father's death until she can prove her legitimacy and protect her inheritance which is threatened by her uncle and vile cousin. He plans to woo Brianna and become Laird to prove to his father that he is capable of being Laird. Brianna and Colin are forced to marry after a compromising situation. Their love grows as they unite to protect the castle and the people. This is a wonderful story that will keep you entertained from beginning to end.

Can't wait for the next one!

I'd been waiting for this book ever since I discovered Martin's Deception of a Highlander, which I loved. Her storytelling and writing were captivating in book 1, and I wasn't disappointed at all by book 2. They're each standalones, btw.

Brianna and Colin's romance unfolds at a pace that never makes you scoff and roll your eyes. They're incredible characters who don't feel imperfectly perfect...by that I mean some stories seem like the major character flaw the hero and heroine begin with feels forced, and then when the story/arc is complete, they're perfectly fixed. Not the case here. The character arc seemed genuine and believable -- even when we know our flaws, we're still plagued by them, but it's what we do to overcome them where we shine. It's what we do to accept them where we grow. Martin showed this beautifully with Colin's character.

From the very first scene in Brianna's POV -- the first and last line even -- you're hooked and have to know what's going to happen. Each scene after that builds on it - until you just can't put it down.

Excellent pacing and writing, effortless storytelling, lovable characters, and a beautiful love story. Martin is now 2 for 2. Can't wait for the third!
