Fiction that is historical

I read this novel by Paul L. Maier many years ago when it was first published, and have re-read portions from time to time, as I have read most of the author's work, fiction and history. I am a historian by training and experience, with special emphasis on Christianity during the first three centuries. To find an enjoyable, well written novel that happens also to be historically accurate, is a rare experience. Recently, when I wished to present a small inexpensive gift to our minister as a token of appreciation, I thought immediately of Professor Maier and his excellent work . I had to mentally flip a coin between his prize-winning "Josephus..." and the first of his historical novels. The book, in its present paperback edition, came promptly in excellent condition.

A must-read.

I read the original in paperback many years ago. This is a fantastic and insightful read, not a heavy and dusty historical documentary. Few liberties were taken, especially where matters of Scripture are involved. One of my all-time favorites.

recommended

I have thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It is based on historical fact, but since it is a novel, it places the reader on the scene where the events have taken place. It gave me insight to the characters and customs of the time. Once I began to read "Pontius Pilate", I was unable to put it down. I highly recommend it.

100% Paul L. Maier

100% Paul L. Maier. Reader friendly, accessible, yet historically impeccable. Paul was my Graduate adviser, as well as a friend and mentor at Western Michigan University. Even his nonfiction works such as translations of Flavius Josephus and Eusebius, come off as intimately readable, rolling off the tongue as if spoken. I would be comfortable quoting his works in scholarly papers. I dedicated my first Novel, Staffwielder, to him and wish he would keep churning out the prose.
