PreS-Gr 3 In this well-composed picture book, Buddy Bear and his mother spend a summer day observing and sketching pond life. Buddy hopes to spot a turtle. He makes notes and draws many of the plants, bugs, and animals he sees while his mom reads factual information from a field guide. Specimens include ducks and geese, a whirligig beetle, a frog, cattails, duckweed, water lilies, dragonflies and damselflies, a salamander, and a pond skater. Buddy does see a turtle briefly and also spots one in the clouds and in a rock formation. Interspersed in the sequential text are Buddy s love of food and his sense of humor in the form of some nature jokes and puns. Wallace s familiar mixed-media collage illustrations (cut paper, photographs, and colored pencil) make this a visually appealing and informative look at limnology. Instructions are included for making a rock turtle. --School Library Journal, April, 2011Gr. PreK-3 Buddy and Mama Bear head for Pete s Pond, where they enjoy observing the animals and plants. Like any good naturalist, Buddy makes drawings in his notebook and labels them. Armed with a handy field guide, Mama answers Buddy s questions, offers facts about pond life, and exchanges riddles with her son. The colorful collage illustrations combine elements of cut paper, photos, and colored pencils. A simple craft project is appended. Written with an understanding of what will interest children this picture book from Buddy Bear series provides an accessible introduction to ponds and their inhabitants. --Booklist, March 15, 2011 Nancy Elizabeth Wallace uses cut paper, scissors, and a glue stick to prepare her three-dimensional colorful artwork. Nancy is the author of a number of picture books, including Seeds! Seeds! Seeds! , Recycle Every Day! , Pumpkin Day! , The Valentine Express , and Alphabet House . A book that encourages nature exploration

My first grader was captivated by this book that follows a young bear and his mother as they go pond walking. Mama Bear and Buddy Bear go to Pete's Pond and find nature in abundance. There's duck and geese, whirligig beetles, frogs, cattails, duckweed, waterlilies, and many more. In simple language, readers get to discover what distinguishes a damselfy from a dragonfly, and much more.

Along their walk, young Buddy tries his best to look out for his prize, the sighting of a turtle. Mother and child have time to not only enjoy nature in all its splendor, but also stop to have some rest and snacks. The collage illustrations add a lovely simplicity to the story that makes it all the more engaging, with actual cut-out photographs of ducks, damselflies, etc. This is a wonderful way to inspire a love of nature in young children.

Engaging and Educational

My 4 year old loves this book. It is a book about a little bear and his mama, who go out for a walk and learn about everything in their environment. The little bear points out and draws what he sees, while his mom describes everything to him. This is a wonderful book about nature and a great introduction to environmental science. It was also a reminder to me, as a parent, to not rush through my day, to stop and enjoy what's around me and to make more teachable moments throughout my daughters' days.

Well Done, Great Pictures

An engaging story about a little bear who goes on a walk to a freshwater pond with his mom. The text might be a little much for my 3-5 year olds with Special Needs, but I think the illustrations - a combination of drawings & photographs ( of the things he sees at / in the pond )are quite engaging for young readers.

I will be using this book as part of my science curriculum this year. It will be a great introduction for some great science lessons & experiments.

Cute book!

This is a great education book! Not only is it educational, but it's a colorful story also. It kept my daughter intrigued and wanting to hear more. This book would be great for homeschooling parents that want to do a nature study or a regular classroom that is on a nature study. This is a wonderful and cute book that I recommend to teachers and parents alike!

Everything I Want in a Story!

This book is the kind of book I like. Being a homeschooling mom I always like a little bit of learning to go on when we read a book :) Pond Walk is about a small bear and his mother ( who I personally think is a homeschooling bear (smile)). They go for a pond walk and he takes his sketch pad ( notebook/lapbook) and along the way draws the things he is seeing and learning about.
I loved that this book promotes learning about pond life...not just simple things but some really interesting facts. It also promotes spending time with family by making you want to just get outside and see all the things God has created. The little bear has a sense of humor and several "corny" jokes were thrown into the conversations (which my 5-year-old loved!). And at the end there is even an explanation of a cool craft project you can do together! I LOVED this book!

Science for young children, outstanding

Nancy Elizabeth Wallace writes nature books about the activities of Buddy and his mama. In this book they are going for a walk around a pond. Mama tells Buddy about the insects, plants, and other things that they see as they visit the pond as he sketches it all. Buddy has word play jokes that young children will enjoy.

This a fun book for a classroom to use when learning about ponds, insects, turtles, or dragonflies. This is a fun book for parent child reading. I have enjoyed every Nancy Elizabeth Wallace nature book about Buddy and mama that I have, but even more important the kids I read them to really enjoy them. These are some of the best science books I have seen for young children.

The book Pond Walk is around 20 pages of colorful construction paper like patchwork of a boy buddy and his mom on a nature walk. In this book you will have educational science dialogue about everything he stops and sees as well his interruption drawing. The book is cute, happy, and very educational, prompting lots of questions I'm sure next time you take your 3-8 year old out near a pond. Great addition to our homeschool nature book collection.

Sure to become a favorite in my house

Living near a river and woods, the theme of Nancy Wallace's book is right up my alley. We love nature and being outdoors in my family, and this is just the book for us.

Pond Walk is a fun learning experience in nature for character Buddy Bear, as well as for anyone who reads this book. Wallace's paper cutouts are cute and creative, and I even learned a few things myself about nature. I was impressed! I get the feeling Pond Walk will become a favorite in my house.

Very good book, informative, lively illustrations, easy to ask questions, but description slightly misleading

This is a wonderfully illustrated and written ecology book told through a pond walk by a mama bear and her cub.

As the walk commences you see pictures of what Buddy the cub sees and also Buddy drawing them in his journal. The mama bear conveys interesting information about the animals and ecology of the pond. And I really do like that it shows Buddy's drawings as they are inspiring to our daughter to draw and it makes the whole story more real to her. She is not quite 3 and the book is much too long for one sitting for her. But she does really enjoy it.

The book has some humor adults can enjoy and older kids even if they might be of the groan variety I still laughed at the jokes. This would be great to introduce around the time you might be thinking of doing some nature related activity. So perhaps a Friday night. And then say hey would you like to take a walk tomorrow to our town lake?

From the book description I was expecting some kind of cutouts or foldouts or three D items. There isn't any of that but that was my only small complaint and not enough to drop it a star. Highly recommended.
